Oh how this really hits home. Typing letters and making love. I must have typed thousands of letters to my sweetie on many Underwood typewriters, among others, and we are still in love after fifteen years.
The roots are deep below the ground I like to walk with you in the evening Up the hill and back down I watch the mail boat from the clearing My mind is so confused, I climb back on top of you And I'm changing the ribbons in this old Underwood Well, step out of your dress and I'll wear you like a hood For a hood is a home for someone who lives alone I draw a line from A to be And what happens in between It is an open mystery As far as I can see My mind is so confused, I climb back on top of you And I'm changing the ribbons in this old Underwood Well, step out of your dress and I'll wear you like a hood For a hood is a home for someone who lives alone.
Know how you feel! I've wanted to play this for years but every time I tried to figure it out I never got really far. Few years of playing later and gave it another go and now I have it! Love playing this song now. It's a real gem
Come to think of it, I wonder if he can write a song about a Royal, a Remington, or an L. C. Smith. "And I'm brushing the type in this old Remington." Or, "I am cleaning the platen, in this Royal typewriter.". Oh well, just a thought.
it got my tail wiggling that's for sure. and by tail i mean head. and by wiggle i mean bobbing. and by head bobbing i mean doing nothing at all. nothing at all. nothing at all
I was curious myself, so I googled 'underwood typewriter'. It turns out that they were a big American company back in the day who made typewriters. I think that the line "and I'm changing the rhythm, in this old Underwood" refers to a shift in outlook or perspective about something - he's changing the rhythm of his typing, so his writing is changing too. I think the rest of the song is about feeling clueless and a bit lost in life and having a close friend/lover who gives you relief from the hardships that you face. I think the line "My mind is so confused, I climb back on top of you" refers to sleeping with a lover. As do the lines about wearing somebody like a hood. And then the line "for a hood is a home, for someone who lives alone" suggests that close physical companionship gives you a feeling of being at home when you live a mostly solitary life. That's how I think of it anyways :)
Could it be a tribute to Bob Dylan? The into is a direct borrow and it’s well documented that Dylan used an underwood typewriter to work on. I like to walk with you in the evening.. could be a metaphor for Fionns liking to listen to Dylan’s music The roots are deep below the ground.. a metaphor for fionns roots in Dylan’s music and Dylan’s roots extending deeper still.. I’m lost at “step out of your dress” though lol
It's about a relationship with a girl. He writes her poetry on the typewriter and gets "back on top of her" and wears her like a hood. They are in the throws of honeymoon romance love. This is what I got from it
We are not here to compare musicians. The Tallest Man on Earth is very good, but come on, Fionn Regan is equally enjoyable to listen to. Both are supreme musicians and acoustic guitar players making music for the RIGHT reasons. It's not cool to call someone an "eternal deity" compared to somebody else, especially when both are fantastic musicians playing similar styles of music. Both probably share MANY fans and Kristian is likely offended by your statement and likely disagrees with you.
This song was written from the heart. So much poet justice it kills me.
I love Fionn Regan.. I'd like to walk with him in the evening :)

Ahhh. Without a doubt one of my favourite songs.

One of my favourite songs, but still not entirely sure about its meaning. Any thoughts?

He sais 'i'm changing the ribbon', not 'rhythm' - the ribbon on a typewriter is a reel of material that provides the ink for the typing.
I just realised that a week or two ago, felt pretty stupid afterwards haha. Changes the meaning a bit alright
