How Naomi Osaka Became The Highest-Paid Female Athlete Ever | Forbes

- Опубліковано 21 тра 2020
- Naomi Osaka was only a year old when Serena Williams won her first grand slam title in 1999. Nineteen years later, Osaka beat Williams at the U.S. Open finals to win her first grand slam. It was one of the most controversial matches in Open history involving three code violations called against Williams. Now the 22-year-old ace has beaten her legendary rival once again, this time for bragging rights as the highest-paid female athlete in the world.
Osaka earned $37.4 million the last 12 months from prize money and endorsements, $1.4 million more than Serena, setting an all-time earnings record for any female athlete in a single year; Maria Sharapova held the prior record with $29.7 million in 2015.
The ascension puts an end to a decisive winning streak for Williams, who has been the world’s highest-paid female athlete each of the past four years, with annual pre-tax income ranging from $18 million to $29 million. The 23-time grand slam champion has collected almost $300 million during her career from endorsers who have swarmed the 38-year-old star.
Osaka’s rise to the head of the charts was a perfect convergence of several factors. She first proved herself on the court, with back-to-back grand slam titles at the 2018 U.S. Open and 2019 Australian Open. That plus her heritage-a Japanese mother and Haitian-American father-helped separate her from the pack; at only 20 when she won her Open title, she had a cool factor and engaging personality.
Osaka’s roots are crucial to her endorsement stardom. She was born in Japan. When she was three, she and her family moved to the U.S., settling on Long Island and then heading to Florida; older sister, Mari, also plays on the pro circuit.

Japan pay big money for their star athletes. Naomi made 24.3 million last year while Nishikori made 33 million. Choosing to represent Japan was a smart move .
I thought Nishikori had retired from the atp
She didn’t chose. She wanted to rep the US but they didn’t see her potential and declined.
@@stefanopatton1809 How do you decline someone from representing a country they're a citizen of?
HottRoundzProduction tennis is an expensive sport at the junior elite level and pro level. Sure she could have represented them. But she wouldn’t have gotten backing from the USATF (i think that’s the organization). Without backing from the US should would have been paying out of pocket for shoes, rackets, re-stringing, domestic travel, international travel, training, coaching, hitting partners, entry fees for tours.
@@stefanopatton1809 this isn't true. She did indeed choose to represent Japan and has since renounced her American citizenship.
I’m japanese im so proud of her!! And i am so happy to see the whole world is rooting for her and loving her🥰🥰🥰
@Tracy Sharp that escalated quickly
@Christian Cullen the whole world is rooting for her apart from you .
She's earned it. To keep your cool in a Slam final while facing a hostile crowd/opponent would be tough for a seasoned veteran, let alone a 20 year old kid.
So her earnings must have come as payoff of keeping herself calm over the childish behavior of Serena Williams 😂
Funny you should mention that , Serena Williams has been through more hostile crowds and opponents than Naomi especially in Indian Wells where they booed her , venus and her dad calling them the n-word all with other obscenities but I guess you never heard of that
Japan does NOT have a lot of elite athletes. So when one does come up, all the rich Japanese companies want a piece of them.
Ask yourself why Kei Nishikori has been earning similar bucks to the likes of Nadal and Novak in recemt years. The dude has never even won a masters 1000 never mind a major! He earns 10 times more in endorsements than other dudes with the same credentials
That makes sense.
Also I would think that Japanese top athlets are on top of the list of people to sponsor for any company that want to penetrate in the Japanese market, which has high earning, but is traditionally consumes homeland companies'products
Endorsements
IMG, Yonex, Nike, Nissan Motor, Citizen Watch, Nissin Foods, Shiseido, Wowow, All Nippon Airways, Mastercard, Procter & Gamble (new deals Louis Vuitton and Tag Heuer)
She made 1.4 million more than Serena this year. Serena made 36 million this year, trust me she's happy for Osaka. Serena has made over $300 million dollars she' s very rich and happy. You all can continue with the negative comments about Serena she does not care, she has the family and fame she's good. Serena and Osaka are friends they will never say anything bad about each other. Osaka calls Serena her tennis mother, I love their relationship, Osaka has said on several occasions that the reason why she plays tennis is because of Serena and Venus. I know certain people do not like Serena so coming on to this post to say negative things about her makes you feel good, got for it. It will never change that she is the most decorated tennis player in the open era. I'm very proud of Serena and Osaka they are both champions in my books. There is a wonderful article written about Roger and Rafa I'm sure most of the people with the negative comments would feel better about writing something positive about them on the other post about those two guys. This income for Serena does not include all the small business she's a part of, she owns a small percentage of the Miami Dolphins and other major companies, the young lady is a winner. Serena may not win another GS that 23 sure does look good to most tennis players who have only won 1,2, or 3. Maria has 5 GS, and Venus has 7 GS, they are both winners in my book also. Let's pray that we can solve this virus instead of all the negative comments.
And no one cares about your opinion. Action speaks louder than words. Serena’s actions towards Osaka in that match speaks volumes about her character. Serena slept with drake and is married to an ugly billionaire for money. All those actions show she a selfish, grotesque person inside. Osaka is polar opposite kind, humble, pretty, talented, noble, and angelic. So 🤫

Thank you L Hinkle, because I felt the same way listening to this guy negative comments, first thing I notice and always notice is how they alway say her Japanese roots and never mention her haitian roots, because her father is Haitian.. getting rid of these stereotypes is going to be hard, trust me we're going to find a cure for the Coronavirus before we fix this racism sickness..
Why has Serena Williams, the greatest female tennis player of all time, only been the highest paid female athlete 3 times in her illustrious career?
Hector Sanchez stfu and leave.
She also holds those titles as a Haitian 🇭🇹 woman, she is both Japanese and Haitian
AlyWonder152
And American
she was born in japan so she's japanese. Based on society you are based off the country you were born. Maria sharapova is russian even though she looks and sound american. Serena is American even though her ancesotr could be from another country. Basically she's Japanese.
Black Spiderman You appear to confuse Nationality with Ethnicity. You are aware that the two are very different, right? Anyone can have different Nationality and Ethnicity. All Americans are do not have the same Ethnicity. Additionally, many people can and do have multiple nationalities. In this case, they specifically said she holds dual citizenships (2 nationalities; American and Japanese). Additionally, her father being Haitian allows her to also be eligible for Haitian citizenship. One needs not be born in a country to become a National of said country. Thus, she’s Haitian, American, Japanese with respect to Nationalities; and both Asian and Black/Afro-Caribbean/Of African decent, in terms of Ethnicity.
Thank you for reminding them about that . Haitian for life .
@@blackspiderman1887 Not every society - in my country if the child has American parents - and is born in Bermuda - that child will not get Bermuda status.
She’s such a like able and attractive person. The financial success obviously has a lot to do with her half Japanese origins, but she would do well commercially no matter where she was from.
Well deserved! A female champion we can all be proud of!
She deserves all the abundance that is flowing to her!
🥳🥳🥳🥳
We love to see it
now that is SELF-MADE
Interesting how nba and nfl players her exact age can sign multi-million dollar contracts which ensure GUARANTEED money but her maximizing her marketability is a problem 🤔
Keep going naomi!💚💚
Fascinating
Now i know where the racks-at .
Good for her! I hope she doesn't end up like Genie Bouchard or worse, Ana Kournikova who had sooo much prospect and potential, but failed to live up it because of distractions and endless endorsements deals. Good for you girl, but stay focused! You are still sooo young and if you lose focus and stop performing, these same companies will ditch you and move on to the next hot thing out there. Cheers!
She's the highest paid because of endorsements , she's not the highest paid woman athlete according to prize money won , if they don't count endorsements the Serena Williams is technically the highest paid athlete of her sport . Maria Sharapova and Naomi Osaka have a lot of companies that endorse them that's how they earn so much but its definitely not the sport they're playing or the titles they've won
Who asked for this?
Awesome
Alright Osaka, we need you to win a few more GS...
Beautiful 🙏🏽😉
Why you keep avoiding that her dad is Haitian and she also admitted being haitian ??
Sunrise Sunset he taught her and her sister how to play tennis and developed her from the start...he’s her coach....
Future P.A. From the Hood sssh! Don’t say that too loud! (Some still believe in the fantasy of if it not part of a rich country it’s not worth mentioning- lazy journalism)
I am sure she also loves her dad's country, but there are not global Haitian companies to make money of, so it will never be in the news, regardless of what she thinks or feels
Naomi gets to double dipped in both the U.S market and Japan (Asia in the broader sense). If she took a step further and became fluent in Japanese or another language, I am willing to bet that she will be the richest female athlete in history by 2030. She's on track to reach that status though as the prize money for tennis has increased as well as endorsement deals.
Yesssss......#WizeKing
Naomi is a combination of African physical strength and Japanese discipline.
She's part Haitian, they don't have discipline in Haiti? Her Haitian father wasn't disciplined? I think your comment is subtlety racist.

With what she's been through, she don't need America!
I like her
So no mention of her Blk Haitian roots, like we're all blind.... 2. TWO blk women are the highest paid female athletes
Say no more, you said it loud enough Ballin on a budget Rhunter
Yeah but they're both American - trained in the USA.
The USA is not a race, skin color or Nor religion
It's a capitalist culture that fosters excellence
With less glass ceilings than many other cultures
they're not champions because of their skin color - but because of their training in the USA
Naomi is not black
@@Napstone There's nothing wrong with simply giving a glance to the other side of her family. It's important for people to see that she is black and successful, as globally there are still many negative connotations surrounding being black
@GreaterGood510 Japanese are not well behaved people, that is just your perception.

Cordae done well
She better start winning again....
She just did 😊
@@harotaro1067 I saw. 🙌💯
wow that's amazing!
I really love her so much
It's because her biggest endorsements come from Japan
This is actually just a gimmick. It’s the same with Nishikori. Japanese companies go mad when an athlete comes up and invest like crazy. Plus here there was a citizenship situation. It’s just stupid endorsements with Japanese players.
you ignore she’s a 4 time grand slam champion

Congrats the YBN Cordae
they both be making money stop spewing nonsense
No longer a dual citizen...
She still is, she just decided on representing Japan.
It's funny how the people who hate Serena Williams gravitate to Naomi Osaka
Misleading Williams overall has more earnings ffs and overall
They meant the earnings in the past 12 months. Osaka will eventually make more that William's in the short term because of the color of her skin and being Japanese sponsors wilmbuse here more. Similar to sponsors using Sharapova more that William's even though William's was the more accomplished player. Black folks will always be treated secondary by society even when they are the best at something. Sad.
@@singuntothelordinspiredbyt9140 stop whining. Both are rich.
life but in the U.S Osaka is referred to as a black, since her dad is black; so her earning more than Serena is not because of her skin, but the country she's decided to represent.
BEYOND POETRY Inspired by life skin???🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The reason the Japanese companies paying her so much is that "hey we are not homogeneous country and we are not racist." here is a gagillion dollar and do commercials.
Why the slight against Serena ?
Goldberg Brian you can uplift people without tearing others down
Now, here's my question : What makes her more Japanese than Haitian-American (since she's exactly 50% of each)? Also, I simply don't understand why she goes by her mother's name only !
That's extremely unusual. I've seen people with hyphenated names comprised of both their mother's + father's last name, but I have to say, only identifying by the mom's name is quite odd, peculiar & uncommon if not downright unsettling ...
You would get more money playing for Japan and identifying as Japanese.
Taking the last name of your mother is not that uncommon in Japan if the mother's family name is more successful.
Apprentice would consider it to be an honour to take their Master's last name to carry on the legacy, even if they are not related.
There are some cultures where the children take on the mothers name. And the wife doesn’t take on the surname of her husband. So go figure, has nothing to do with who’s the boss.. and good for them
Bruh just google her name and you’ll find all the answers you need
Good. She deserves it, rather than that roided out cheat.
If by roided out cheat you mean Sharapova, I completely agree.
MRLONG758 have you seen Serena lately? Her body mass and temper tantrums, not to mention her inane ramblings online and obsession with constantly telling the world that she gave birth (like that’s so special), makes it certain she’s on anabolic steroids. She’s Black, which is why the ATP won’t push for testing, because she’ll obviously use her skin color as an excuse and then call the whole organisation racist to guilt-trap them.
@Nkosi Ndugumuzana 🤣🤣🤣
Idiot
Racist
Did she really get paid more than william and sharapova?
Have you seen the talent in women's tennis Bobby Riggs was born too soon LoL 😂😊😂😂 It's not about how talented you are it's about how marketable you are the Williams sisters had to win Wimbledon three times before the white folks threw them a crumb and then Naomi comes in and scoops up the gravy after winning two grand slam events wow
To be fair, Osaka plays for Japan...so they throw a hell of a lot of money behind her as their only grand slam champion. She stated that as one of the reasons for playing for Japan. More lucrative endorsements 🤷♂️
