Great tip of the hat to Herbie Hancock. Herbie is definitely one of the greats. He is an American music icon. His contributions to music and culture will be appreciated and studied long after he is gone.
I have always loved that anecdote about his involvement on Jack Johnson. As I recall, in Paul Tingen's book about Miles Davis he says he was carrying a sack of groceries when he came into the studio.
Herbie is unique unto himself. A mind like his does not occur often in this world. A great video. Are you, Andy, going to ‘observe’ when you hit 2000 subscribers? This will be happening soon.
Was listening to his Mwandishi recordings the other day. Incredible stuff, absorbing and still unique. Hope we get some new stuff from Herbie soon, it has been a while.
Great stuff once again. Two of my favourites are Sunlight and Manchild....I love his vocoder and the songs on Sunlight.... And he is still going for it....his set at Glasto was great!!! Still getting fresh ideas from those tunes he has been playing for decades.... You gotta love Herbie...
Very few scores out there. Played bass in a college course doing HH last year. I can even forgive the disco tosh but think what he might have done if he had kept on trhe tracks. I would recommend Identity by Airto as a good guest album where he produces and plays synth. Also Vera Cruz by Milton Nascimento (later version).
Herbie has definitely had a long and storied career. My favorite HH is from the Blue Note era, as both a leader and sideman. Second is the Miles band followed by the Mwandishi period. Maybe putting the Miles quintet second is a sacrilege, but it took me awhile to warm up to that band (again, a sacrilege). I remember going into the “Plugged Nickel” live set expecting some pretty much straight-ahead interpretations of some jazz standards. Boy, was I wrong. It certainly wasn’t that. Adventuristic is putting it mildly. Ultimately groundbreaking music though.
Love your encyclopedic knowledge of modern music - I guess that's part of your job. Good points about cultural significance. Some say the reason that latter-day- jazz is less impactful than it could have been is due to its lack of cultural relevance. I'd forgotten just how culturally signifant Herbie has been.

Sextant is so amazingly sci fi sounding..
I like his transition into poppy / disco flavoured stuff too. George Duke did it well too I thought
Thrust , and Sextant are amazing, as well as the Headhunters album of coarse. Love that era.

Even better.....
Also his contribution to Parralel Realities....
Yep...Herbie's loved...
The Prisoner is my favorite album for the melodies and arrangements
