- Episode 77
Last week we picked up the last two of the 5 Belgian Draft Horses saved from shipping to slaughter. Along with the sweetest donkey! Meet the new horses to arrive at the farm and find out their names! Over the past month, with the help of our subscribers and followers we have rescued 6 Belgian Draft Horse and a donkey from shipping to slaughter!
Elias and Amelia were part of the 5 rescued horses and have been here for a few weeks now. It was time to get them integrated into the herd so they could enjoy retirement grazing in the pasture. Most of our integrations have gone smooth however Elias has been a bit of a challenge and wants to be in charge. If you’ve ever watched an unfamiliar horse try to gain entry into an established herd, you will probably never forget it. Imagine how it feels for a horse to be uprooted from a place of security, to be dropped somewhere completely unknown to him. Following the introduction of a new herd member, the other horses have to redefine their hierarchy to make a place for the stranger. This momentary uncertainty in the social rankings may be the perfect moment for an horse to challenge the system, to protect their long-held social rank. Not only does the risk of injury skyrocket, but the turmoil, in general, can be quite stressful. Find out all the details of what happened in this episode!
We hope you enjoy this video! Make sure you like, comments and subscribe to our channel so you don't miss anything happening around here! Because it's never a dull moment!

I rescued a percheron 2 yrs ago with a broken ankle. Last December I rescued a belgium with cancer in her eye, now removed. And this week I got my first donkey from slaughterhouse and also a lowline angus. All of them are super sweet!!! I love the drafts!!!!! I wish I could save them all
God bless you :)
You are so kind we all wish to beable to help out and save more of God's creatures ❤
Why would anyone kill those beautiful horses. People are shameful. Gorgeous and majestic animals.
The two new Belgians are just gorgeous. Thank you for saving them!❤❤❤
Still bothers me that people who claim to love and appreciate horses create this need. Thank you.
My heart just cries for what is happening to these horses. And watch all the horses that is left behind like that beautiful dapple horse you walked by. Thank you for what you do.
It’s just beautiful to know someone saved these gorgeous animals from being slaughtered, after giving so much of their life to working so hard each day, they have a safe and loving place to call home. Thank You for all you do for these animals.
Thank you!
They want to finally be horses, and they are now! Not being worked to death, not trapped on a slaughter truck to hell. This is how life should be for all animals. The greed and inhumanity towards animals is out of control on this planet 😖😖
To think that a pregnant Mama should have been slaughtered makes me sick . How can people „throw away“ a pregnant animal?! 😢
Thank god that you rescued her and her baby ❤❤
Love and greetings from Germany
How can you tell them apart????
@@ellendelima3579
Do you mean how a owner knows if his donkey is pregnant?
I think if someone is a responsible owner he should know or see it.
That is a gorgeous pair and . They are full of life. No magnificent animal such as these should ever be at risk of slaughter.
I watched your videos before you rescued any Belgians. Now you are the Champions of Belgians! Amazing what you are doing!🧡🧡
Wow, thank you! We appreciate your support!
Thank you Julie for giving these horses a second chance.
Watching rescued horses being able to live in a herd again is refreshing and heartwarming.
Thank you for saving these beautiful animals.
Thank goodness for people like yourselves. Too much breeding of horses throughout the world causes this extensive problem of excess and abandoned horses.
The way Elias postures and presents with that immense neck suggests he was mature and bred before he was gelded, he is a handsome soul and not overly aggressive. Maybe his hormone levels could be checked.
Elias carries himself with the grandur of a Trojan horse. His mane and neck posture are spectacular
My first impression was TROJAN HORSE, war horse......I agree completely. Beautiful arrogant dominant, spirited. I will be watching Elias express himself as his days go by. He already inserted himself like a Hollywood star with Julie at the end of this video. What a guy!❤
Julie, I love watching your videos because I learn so much from you! Thank you for explaining what the horses were doing and what their behavior meant. Herd dynamics are very interesting to learn about since I have never had a horse or been around anyone’s horses. Thank you so much for letting us see first hand what goes on with new horses being introduced to the herd. All of you there at Fletcher farms are doing such wonderful work with these horses, making their retirement a truly enjoyable one. Probably for the first time in their lives they know true love, comfort and caring . Thank you for all that you do for all of your beautiful animals!❤😊👏
Elias is an ALPHA GUY. HE THINKS. BUT CHARLIE IS ALPHA STALLION. HATES ALL THE BOYS
Yeah, that NECK, right?? Gorgeous!
I was wondering if he needed a chiropractor!😂
They are such majestic, powerful animals! Thanks for giving them a good home.
Our pleasure! Thank you for watching!
Elias is quite the studley guy. He's impressive and amusing to watch.
It’s very distressing to think that Elias in all his glory and magnificence- along with all the other beautiful horses would have been slaughtered by now if Julia and Corey had not followed their dream - these horses are so full of life.🐴💕❤️
You are absolutely right. They are so beautiful to watch running together. Calms to soul to see horses, period.😂
Me too. Horses speak to my soul.
Omg that closeup of Elias at the end - he is GORGEOUS!!!
I will never ever, ever understsnd how anyone could take a beautiful animal like that and discard him like used trash at a kill lot. There should be laws against that. There aren't enough 'Julie's" to save them all, but Julie certainly does make a difference with each new soul she saves.
I contacted on of the breeders when their horse was there , a prize winning TB race horse named Ponita who won a lot of money. They did not even reply. I think some people in the industry are monsters.
After watching the horrible video of Katie weaning her foal this one has been a breath of fresh air. Thank you for this great video on how to introduce horses and form a new. You have such a beautifull farm. Greetings from the Netherlands
First time here love how these beautiful creatures walk in the truck as a lot number and walk out with a name identity and wonderful future! People like you are a blessing thank you so much for your passion and kindness!!
Elias seems like he is the fittest and most athletic of the herd and I bet he will work his way up to a high position in the herd hierarchy. He is a stunningly beautiful horse and looks like a real powerhouse when he moves.
When your world has consisted of being harnessed to wagons/plows/buggys or being confined to pens or small paddocks it must feel pretty good to RUN - if your joints will allow it! It is lovely to see them do so. Korbin will surely enjoy doing so too! Any plans for his procedure yet? This was another great vlog Julie, I'd be interested in seeing just how much time & work it is on the average day to prepare, feed, clean up,muck out all of the horses, donkeys, goats, dogs, & cats. I'm tired just thinking about it! Thanks for a great start to my day😊
Probably an all day job
Xoxo
Just wondering is there a Reason why most of them appear to have their tails cut?
@@eilemoo3272 it's usually so the tail doesn't get caught in equipment that the horse is pulling
And when these nasty Humans have used these poor horses up it's off to the Slaughter House to be rid of you. This is how we treat Animals who have been abused by Humans , Humans always let me down because they let themselves down, very few of us are taught to show love and compassion towards Animals, My grand child is 22 months and we fill her day with reading different things and reading about Animals, she knows all the names and sounds Animals make, I have no doubt she will grow up loving Animals, you have to start early in their life to introduce them to Animals!
Elias, Amelia & Blue have no idea how lucky they are...
Indeed!
The donkey looked pregnant to me.
These guys! Walking into Heaven on Earth!
Oh my goodness Elias is gorgeous💞...what a stunning horse...he's beautiful!!!
I think now he lives a true horse life for the first time...amazing...
All horses are looking great and happy...they are in paradise...thanks for your love for these precious horses🙏...and "Blue" has a sweet baby on bord for sure😉
God bless you❤❤❤
Hello to fellow F.F.A. followers, I love to see how all the horses and donkey's are doing ...they are so loved and well taken care of in their retirement ❤❤❤ Best wishes from England UK 🇬🇧
And best wishes from Wales too! 🏴
I'm watching with you from Tucson, AZ.
It always makes me nervous turning a new horse out with the herd. I hope all these new beautiful rescues settle in well! They all deserve a restful, happy retirement. Thanks for all you do! ❤
Always love seeing the new horses, and donkeys, and how they adjust to interacting with the herd. Thank you for your care of them all.
Julie, thank you so much for sharing your beautiful hurd.
I will be tunning in for the "Continuing saga of Fletcher Farms." God bless
When Elias runs around "his" heard with his head low, that's called "snaking" it's how stallions move their herds or rounds them up whichever they are wanting to accomplish.
Charlie has his herd.
It's going to scramble things when you add more geldings and then that stallion who's probably been used as a stallion all his life.
I think you need more mares so there's enough keep the boys happy. Lol
Some of these horses are still pretty spry for their ages!
They are having a blast!❤❤❤
Watch some wild horses videos and you will see how herds behave. Usually, there's a boss mare that the herd follows & when the stallion wants to move them, he does that "snaking". Horses are so interesting. They have their chums and not so chummy and stay in family groups. The immature stallions have their own group. You might see your passive geldings do this as you have a couple who have been stallion. Stallions can often have a big cresty neck like Elias and more muscular.
That's why I'm race horses it's rare for a mare to race with the stallions. The stallions are so much stronger and territorial. They want to show who's the biggest & baddest! Lol
I don't approve of horse racing though. The horses are far too young & it's all about money and the horses suffer for it.
Sorry this is too long!😚
I think horses love to race! ITS IN THEIR DNA...But too much too soon can be bad.
@@lynetteheitman5118 They are competitive. Some more some less. They all have alphas to betas like dogs.
I've been a subscriber for a while now and enjoy your videos. You are doing great work and are a savior to these beautiful horses. I don't normally comment and don't want to overstep but I was thinking that if you added the words "rescue" or let people know in your channel name that you offer sanctuary to retired draft horses abandoned to slaughter that your channel would attract more of the multiple millions of people who follow animal rescue channels, which would allow you to raise additional money to fund and fulfill your mission from many more viewers clicking on, interacting, and watching ads.
Some past videos explain they are -not- a rescue. They are the Big Hoof Foundation. Foundation rules and purpose are not the same as a rescue, although both can be non-profit. I love that FFA & Big Hoof Foundation are not part of the donate, donate, donate crowd. This family is pure love, runs by the rules, and is genuine to the core.
@@littlewiseowl4405 - I see. Thank you.
Love ELIAS HES JUST A BIG STUD MUFFIN,HE DOESNT KNOW HES FIXED! WHAT PERSONALITY!!!
When I see these beautiful horses getting rescued my heart breaks for the others watching them leave not knowing their upcoming fate! It’s like when Michela from Save A Fox goes to fur farms to rescue the foxes “not good enough” to kill for their furs! She wants to take them all and so heartbreaking to leave any!! Thank you for all the great people who dedicate their lives to helping them all. There’s a special place in heaven someday for these angels on Earth!
Gourgous deserving horses, Thank you for Rescuing 🙏🙏💕💙💜
You are so kind, thank you for watching!
I’d encourage y’all to watch Steve Young Horsemanship videos. He’s got some great videos on bringing a new horse around to respecting the humans in charge of their care. Very calm and non confrontational. I admire the way he gains their respect and thereby makes them less dangerous.
He an incredible horse trainer for sure. His timing is impeccable. He uses the least amount to pressure to still be effective that I’ve ever seen. I’ve learned a ton watching his videos.
I thought the same thing Steve Young is awesome in his horse psychology.
My mare came from Bowie Livestock and she was in a kill pen on the way to slaughter. She was starved and abused there .
Oh Diane, I am sorry, I hope she is doing fine now with your love and care..Di England 🇬🇧
Bless you❤
Enjoyed watching the herd dynamics.
I’m an introvert so I feel Amelia’s pain😅
Are you sure Elias has been "completely" gelded? He sure doesn't act like it, he acts more like he's rounding up the mares and separating them from the geldings. 😊
He might be proud cut! Which means he still has part of the hormones, that still gives him a bit of a attitude with the other horses out in a herd situation. My Gelding was proud cut even though he didn't try to breed my mare he still was a ladies man. He watched over them & protected them. After all the introduction he should settle down. He sure wasn't shy about meeting everybody! Lol!
I was wondering the same thing.
I agree, there’s some leftover testosterone in him somewhere. He bows his back just like a stallion. He’s acting like a bully. A handsome on but a bully.
It doesn't help that Arabella and Miley looked like they were in heat! Definitely some testosterone still!
Interesting that horse people can see these behaviors. Ty you all for sharing!
😅 charlie refused to be dethroned.
Thank God you are saving these beautiful babies ❤
Blue is so pretty with her dappled coat.
Both of the Belgians have sad little tails from their previous working life. I hope they grow out for the horses. Love the comparison to an aggressive work out trainer!
I believe the farmers docked their tails, amputated much of the tail bone, so their tails won’t ever fully grow out. Am I right?
Sadly yes, you’re right
Sadly yes, you’re right
❤ THANK YOU JULIE AND COREY FOR TAKING IN THESE AMAZING VULNERABLE BEAUTIFUL HORSES 🐴 AND LOVING AND CARING FOR THEM..❤
Blue looks like a Mamacita. Donkeys are my favorite. It is sad to see how many animals need rescue. You are super to give these animal a good home. 🥰🐴💕❤️👍👍
They are beautiful , thanks for saving them
All the beautiful horses you get to kiss and hug ❤
You might want to consider using some panels to make individual small feeding pens. Straight stalls. This will prevent fights over food and insure all horses get a full ration. It will also train the horses to use a chute to protect the vet when they have to examine the horses. You might want to make some fruit slushies in the mixer and, as part of the grooming process, give them like oral worming meds. This will get them used accepting oral meds and can be used to disguise the taste. Watermelon and apple are favorites. Ask the vet. Grocery stores are nice about selling their over ripe produce as livestock feed.
I really love all the work you put into these bighooved horses! Greetings from Sweden
It was fun watching the herd dynamics. Elias strutting around, a rabble rouser, probably thrilled he has all these mares to choose from, probably thought he’d died and gone to heaven. And there he was at the end getting a kiss from you at the end like a sweet heart.
❤😊
this is truly lovely...you have created a haven for these majestic creatures
I am tearing up wayching this beauty. So glad (understatement) that you are able to care for them so well. They are exquisite. Blessings to you. Give them each a smooch and a 'hug' from me.
Thank you for caring and sharing ❤
Been watching Steve for a good few years, he is great :)
Your barn looks gorgeous. Thank you for taking these glorious animals from hell to heaven!
Elias could be proud cut given the way he's behaving around the other horses?
Anyway, its good to see them enjoying their freedom to just be horses❤❤
Elias' side profile looks like a trojan horse. Beautiful
Agreed!
There is nothing more interesting than animal behavior. Thanks for this video.
I totally agree w/ the comment about Elias and his majestic demeanor. He is a character!
bless your heart for taking care of so many lives. and especially saving them from slaughter.
Thank you! We are up to 18 Belgians! I never thought when we bought this place that it would turn into all of this!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you do for these beautiful animals 💞 makes my heart smile ❤❤ But I have to say my heart broke 💔 to watch the other horses left behind just watch as you took your horses home ❤💔
Blue is so beautiful and accepting. She has won my heart! Thank you for the great work you do giving these wonderful animals a second chance and a good retirement! May all success be yours.
13:59 gossiping around the "water cooler" about the "new hires"😂.
I loved watching this. What magnificent animals!! Thank you so very much for saving them. I cried thinking about what their lives had been and what could have happened to them without the donations and the sacrifices of you and your family.
Happy animals make people happy. God bless you all!
Elias is such a gorgeous horse. I love the the way he carries his head and his beautiful arch in his neck makes me wonder if he was a carriage horse before or maybe if he was a show horse. The way he moves is amazing !!!!
An amazing lesson on equine behaviour!! You must have your heart in your mouth watching all the horsey shenanigans! Thank you for posting.
I notice a lot of the rescues have patches of hair missing from their noses I'm guessing from ill fitting tack in their working lives.
You and your team are doing a fabulous job caring for all these magnificent animals. 🐴❤️😊🏴
It was nice of their employees to help her load
Elias definately brings an Energy to the herd, doesn't he?
I SEE ALL THOSE HALTERS AND IMAGINE EACH represents a horse sent to slaughter
The little donkey is precious!❤❤❤
Is always very interesting to see their interactions between each other. They look so beautiful when they run in the field.😊
Your love 💘 and patience is so admirable! JULIE, you getting to know each of these Belgians so personally is amazing...but, a sign of your loving passion on what you've chosen to do in your life's journey with each of these UNWANTED HORSES!!!
💝⭐💝⭐💝⭐💝⭐💝⭐💝⭐💝
Recently saw pulling contest using Belgians and noted they held their necks high. Elias is so handsome with such noble carriage.
It’s amazing how powerful these horses are.
Praise God your able to save them from Slotter. Thank Jesus and you. Beautiful Animals
Liam’s all ‘I’m eating.’ And as we say in Australia, Elias has tickets on himself.
Oh how fantastic you got the other 3 safely home, i get so worried when horses kick out at one another, i know it's natural, but i get upset, i guess it must stress you too Julie, hopefully the resident horses can tell the gorgeous newcomers, they are safe now and are gonna be sooo loved and looked after for the rest of their lives, Thank you once again Julie and Cory for your kindness. Luv Di England 🇬🇧
Thanks for the updates. Very interesting can't wait to see Andy & Hanks introductions!!
Now they are safe 🙏they must feel.. more relaxed🙏🙏
Elias is so Handsome and I love how he prances! Charlie looked like he wanted to take him down a few notches.
So endearing to hear you name your horses after passed on family members ❤. Thank you so much for giving these beautiful animals a new wonderful loving life. ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for the voice over , couldn’t tell apart without the name tags .love your horses !
Elias is quite the looker. All regal standing! The GQ of the group!
Bless you Julie and Cory for what you are doing. What a wonderful thing to watch the freedom ride of those 3 beautiful creatures saved from slaughter, I cried tears of joy! Thank you 😊❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Your farm should be called “Fletcher Freedom Sanctuary”😊
I'm so happy for these three beauties, but my heart cries out for the babies left behind. Why oh why are some people so cruel?.
I like the way you name the horses! Very special!❤️🥰💜🥰
Elias rears up: Dutch says, “Chill, Bro!”❤❤❤
I loved watching these beautiful babies ❤
Thank you for sharing the fascinatingly heard dynamics
I wish I could have a horse😂😂😂 They are such magnificent animals❤❤❤
Hi Julie I just saw this and wanted to pass it on. Not sure if helpful or not but just in case...
Grants are another way to raise funds for a rescue. Along with government grants, organizations like the Equus Foundation, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), and Blue Horse Charities all offer grants to assist rescues in paying for care and retraining horses to prepare for adoption.
It is interesting how they figure things out. They are so interesting. Elias appears to be quite a character.
Good morning. Are you able to explain and tell us a little more about Bowie Livestock? Horse Plus Humane Society just put out a video about Kill Pens and mentioned Bowie as one of the Kill pens that has questionable practices and that rescue organizations should not be getting horses from these type of facilities. We will continue to support your efforts (under my daughter's account with you), but HPHS video is concerning with regards to what Bowie, along with other horse trader facilities, actually does with the funds sent to them when horses are purchased. Please reply if you are able to do so without damaging the relationship you have with Bowie.
Kind Regards and gratitude for all you do!
What beautiful animals! Thanks for all you do!
Are we sure Elias is not a rig ( proud cut), as very full of himself. 🐎 Hopefully not, just glad to be with you wonderful people. Oh and of course the lovely ladies ❤❤❤❤❤❤👀💋
I absolutely love your channel!! A few of my cousins have Belgians, I’ve shared your channel with them! They’re so amazing w/ their teams! We’ve all grown up w/animals our whole lives, I’d absolutely love to rescue every critter on earth if I could! You’re so loving & kind! Thank you for being such a beautiful human soul on our earth! We need more of! Many blessings!
I just love to watch the current group of horses greet the new arrivals. Amazing
Blue Andy and Hank. Are all very gorgeous. The draft boys are absolutely gorgeous. Draft horses are gorgeous.
so heartwarming to see how you res😊que those beautifull hirses and cute donkey.❤
Elias definitely acts like a stallion checking to see if any of the mares are in heat so maybe he was gelded not too long ago! definitely an alpha!
So glad to see 5 new Belgians and a donkey out of Bowie. Quite an undertaking. Interesting to see how the ranking takes place.
