My first cello teacher used this as take-home practice. It hurts in the beginning but tremendously helps with intonation and finger strength. An addition to this is to perform a finger combination with shifting -- start in position 1 performing a finger combination, then move to position 2... work down the string.... then perform the combination in each position back to position 1. This helps with finger spacing, strength, and intonation as you shift positions. Great video!!!
Thank you!! Indeed! In the beginning it hurts, just like gym! But wow, finger strength goes up! Thanks also for the addition! Didn’t think of that! Actually an amazing addition! And braincracking also 😂
Exellent.
Great lesson😊
Thank you Mette! Hope you are doing well!
Bravo 👏
Merci Meryem!
Just starting on this exercice - feeling rather clumsy and sore on the first trial but I won’t give up 😅
Don’t worry! It took me 5 tries before to upload this video 😅
New video!!! Nice to see u back!! Now married haha
Congrats again!!!
Married and totally on fire! 🔥🔥🔥
At the same time brain gym🤯🤓👌
Hahahahahaha! Yes! It is 🤯🥵😂
Another fantastic video! I will add these to my practice. You have the best cello channel with the most amazing content. Many thanks!

Fantastic, from a former professional cellist
Thank you dear colleague! 🙏🏻
Brilliant exercise. How does one become a patron.
Whaaatt? Whoa
Great stuff! I'm not very advanced (yet) and I find this a lot easier and more approachable as a warmup than the famous Cossman agility exercise which goes down. They are similar but with this I can focus on one position at a time each day, and I like the finger workout. Either way it's tough but beneficial I've found. Thanks for sharing!
Wow! You look amazing after amazing days! I'm so glad that you're back! Thank you so much!
Thank you Remy! Yes, I am finally back and on fire! 🔥😄
@@IliaLaporevcellist that's what everyone was wishing for you!! Congratulations again! 👏 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I loved the exercise, I'll include it in my warm up repertoire, thank you Ilia!
Happy you loved the exercise! Check also the comment by @archeon He added a great addition for this exercise!

Number of choices for first note: 4; second note, 3 choices; 3rd note, 2 choices; last note, 1 choice. So total number of combinations (choices): 4x3x2x1=24, aka 4! or 4 factorial. Just saying ;-)
Been always bad in mathematics lol! But thanks a lot for the addition! ;)
@@IliaLaporevcellist Yes, but you can play the cello a lot better than I can play the violin! Thanks for your videos, which are useful for all string players.
hi... thanks for your videos. a question. to articulate you need to hammer on your fingers onto the fibreboard but at the same time we are supposed to be relaxed on the left hand as well.. so how do you achieve firm articulation and enough pressure yet still be relaxed? do you hammer on the note and continue holding this pressure with your arm weight pulling down? this also will make us tired after couple hours.. any suggestions?
newish to cello (3 years) and still working on intonation. I get stuck on finger exercises as I start to focus on intonation rather than strengthening fingers. Should the primary focus of these exercises be on strengthening and then intonation? Or intonation and then strengthening?
I've used similar exercise but the fingerings are 1434 1424 1323 (each as many time as i like) and after each has been played i come down chromatically and play the set again 😁🎻🎶🎶🎶
That’s awesome! I find these kind of exercises not only good for finger strenght, but also for for the brain! 😃
Crossing strings doing this, ugh
