    $30 USD for a emulated game is quite a lot, even if it is a good shmups. I think it should have been $20. I already have the saturn version so I will wait for a sale to have it on modern console.

      Yeah, I think if someone already has access to it through another means, it's definitely wait for a sale territory.

    So glad you enjoyed this absolute all time classic game, it really is one of the greatest of all time!!
    I am old enough to remember playing this in the arcade and I own the Japanese Saturn port which I play the most out of any game in my collection….I even have the Egret Mini with the arcade version built in and I now have this version too such is my love for this game.
    Now this isn’t perfect as you say but I’m still happy it’s out for more people to experience which they should as it’s replay-ability is one of the many things that sets it apart.
    Great review man, looking forward to your next one 👍

    Live wire and M2 have set the bar super high when it comes to options in new STG releases. Every thing City Connection puts out feels so bare bones its really disappointing. This classic deserves so much more.

    • @ShmupsOnSwitch
      @ShmupsOnSwitch  2 роки тому +2

      I get your point, and I too would far prefer everything to get the M2 treatment, but another way of looking at that is: LiveWire and M2 have set the bar *super* high and it's not realistic to expect everyone to meet that bar. This isn't the best port ever, but it's not a bad one either.

    An absolute favorite from back in the day. Too bad this was taken over by City Connection and turned into another lazy, lag fest. This one definitely deserved the M2 treatment.

    I love this game on Saturn! I got the demo from the Japanese store and loved every second of it. I do agree with you the game is a bit on the pricey side. i hope this gets a physical release someday and that is the version i'll be getting. In the meantime I still have it on my Saturn.

    The way they seamlessly integrate the ground laser into the gameplay with the chaining and preempting enemies gives the whole experience a unique character when it could have easily slid into gimmick territory. It’s like the upper and lower shot idea that began in Xevious came to a complete development. The sequel caved to that ugly early 3D and hasn’t aged as well.

    This was the video that really got me to follow the page! And this game, based off the review, did in fact had me download the trial version. I’m glad I got the full version. Multiple play thru’s later, and I still find it a breath of fresh air, shump wise! Excellent review. I agree with everything said!

    For a better taste of the simpler, and perhaps more exciting times, Namco’s Xevious also has 2 levels of action, the Solvalou ship has 2 fire buttons addressing ground and air enemies. A gem from the golden era of arcade games…

    This game looks gorgeous and the gameplay looks really fun. However, the $30 price point is high. It seems like they’re passing it off as two games which is deceptive and scummy. This is an all-time classic and belongs in the Shmup Hall of Fame no doubt.

I have 2 of 36 inbch crt too. I am gonna put them side by side, one sideways, onbe normal, with av splitters, expensive ones, so al my old analog systsmes can be on crt and TATE for all that suport it with no tv turning sideways. Yes, the price is a bit on the high end (15$/€ would have been much better)...
    yes the input lag is a bit high (7 frames)
    but when you are a shmup fan and have a switch...
    Ok ok ... I admit, I already bought it ;-)

    Better on Switch or PS4?

    • @sonicmania9993
      @sonicmania9993 2 роки тому

      PS4 always, unless handheld/mobile play is important to you. Switch almost always introduces 1-2 frames of lag compared to other platforms because of its architecture. This game is no exception, from initial lag-test reports.

      @@DSilvergun Well, if you're going to say that, it would be nice if you could name the exceptions that you know about. I check out frame-by-frame analysis of pretty much every shmup (especially re-released classic shmup) that comes to both Switch & PS4, when such analysis is available. I have never seen one where Switch beats PS4, and the consensus is that there is something in the Switch's hybrid architecture that adds at least a frame of lag. Theoretically, if a port specialist was really good at optimizing for Switch, they could make a port with less lag than PS4 (if they were not also good at optimizing for PS4). Can you let me know which shmups you know, where Switch presents less lag? I'd love to check them out!

    • @ShmupsOnSwitch
      @ShmupsOnSwitch  2 роки тому

      Exactly. This may be more pricey than the ACA titles, for example, but it's still a good deal, as far as I'm concerned, for how great a shmup it is and how expensive it can be elsewhere.

  • @DSilvergun
    @DSilvergun 2 роки тому

    Any lag?

    • @sonicmania9993
      @sonicmania9993 2 роки тому

      4 to 7 frames, depending on who is testing it. JP testers were saying 3 or 4 (who may have been using a 30 fps camera), but Electric Underground and NA testers are saying 6 frames for PS4. Add another frame or two for Switch. Good enough for casual & nostalgic players, but probably not good enough for competitive score-chasers.
      By comparison, most M2 ports are around 3 frames on PS4, and 4-5 on Switch.

    • @ShmupsOnSwitch
      @ShmupsOnSwitch  2 роки тому +1

      I've seen both sets of numbers too. I don't have any way to test the specific frame number myself, but what I will say is: with the Psikyo ports (while I consider them playable) I absolutely notice the lag in a negative sense. I believe those have been recorded at about 7/8 frames on average. With this one, I can't say I noticed bad lag while playing on my TV with an arcade stick, which would suggest it's below 7 frames. As mentioned in the video, it also doesn't have that super snappy feel of the best ports, but it felt decent enough to me. Like you said though, probably not good enough for competitive players, but should be fine for most everyone else.
