I noticed that people are coming to this video after the news of Rebecca’s passing to express the love they have for her. I just wanted to say that I’m equally devastated. I was so inspired by her. I still am. This is one of my favorite videos of all time. Watching Rebecca sing this is a masterclass. She WAS Lily. It is a magical thing when a singer’s voice inspires you. My thoughts are with her family right now, and I know that her voice will live on forever. Sending everyone love.
Lily’s ghost, subtly working these healing magic songs, was the thing that’s always been missing from the book and every movie version of this story. And I wasn’t aware that the actress that played her had died until just now. In my heart she will always be the most important part of this story that I’ve loved since I was a young child.
@@jaredbusby8202 I 100% agree. I can’t get into the other versions because they don’t show the beautiful love between Lily and Archie and don’t represent the healing of grief in the same impactful way. Rebecca was a treasure and is so loved by the theatre community
An honest person who sings like a godess without screaming embellished belting notes. Rebecca knew what pure melody was. She always sought it and her audiences adored her for it.
@Robert Lee, Countertenor same. I *TRIED* listening to the version on the cast album and it took ^2* attempts a few hours apart before I could listen without tears.
Probably the purest voice since Julie Andrews. I absolutely adored her. She was one of my idols when I was a young soprano back in the 90s. Now she sings with the angels. Rest In Peace, Rebecca.
One of the most underrated musicals, beautiful duets, love songs, and 2 great voices... Gives me chills every time. 2:00-2:30 are some of my favorite musical moments of all time. It's just so heart wrenchingly beautiful. The story of Archibald and Lily Craven is such a beautiful and tragic story. The musical took a number of creative liberties (Dr. Craven existing mostly, but Lily's Eyes is another gorgeous, underrated duet so I'll allow for it). But this duet here was a moment where they expanded beyond the book and they KILLED it! In the book Uncle Archie has a dream where the voice of his wife calls him and says she's in the garden. He then receives a letter from Dicken's mother to come home. Here... UGH!! SO GOOD!!!! As they do their back and forth: "All I need is-" "There in the garden." "All I would ask-" "Is care for the child" "Of our love." it's in the tune of the song from Act 1 that told the story of how they fell in love. In the CD recording, as Mandy sings "All I would ask" his voice breaks because the original words of their love song went "All I would ask is never to never to leave." But she did leave, so his voice breaks as he cannot finish those words. Instead, Lily writes a new story: "Care for the child of our love." And promises to be with them both. I could go on and on and on about this song. I'm so glad to see this clip. Bless you for posting it!!!!!
Sorry to get back to you so late! I adore this musical, and this is one of my favorite songs and performances of all time. Their talent is extraordinary. It’s not on the album, but immediately after this song Lily does sing the phrase “come to my garden” and leads him there. Wow, I love “A Girl in the Valley” and I’d never put together that that’s why he didn’t finish “all I would ask”! I’m so glad you picked up on that. I didn’t even realize my two favorite songs from the musical paralleled each other. So glad you like the video, and thank you for your insight and sweet comment!❤️
I saw her in NY .in Secret Garden...just GLORIOUS.....the LORD has called her home and she will glorify Heaven with her God given voice.....we lost an angel....heavenbound
Coming back to videos of Rebecca Luker's visionary performances after her passing is simultaneously devastating and healing. We are so fortunate that even snippets of her talent and grace on stage are preserved forever for the fans, but more importantly for her family and loved ones. RIP Rebecca Luker.
Oh, my friend and forever Marion and Maria! I just heard your voice from the other room and then the news your long and fantastic run had ended! Your kindness, thoughtful words and great talent will live on in my memories and I will always know you through moments like this! Thank you for sharing your gifts and allowing my part to be played from the wings of our common space backstage! Ciao for Now...
4 days ago I had a strange feeling she'd be gone soon. Too soon. Way too soon. That voice. Sending love to Danny, and all who knew and loved her. I will never forget listening to Show Boat and Secret Garden in the back seat of my parent's car, and falling in love with her. Between the loss of Marin, Reinking, and now Rebecca, there's a little musical theatre geek me who is so completely shattered. And a very quiet adult me, trying to make sense of it all.
My sister Janet Saia, too, inspired. She, my sister, was on Phantom for 18 years. She is so sad today. But we believe in the Heaven Realm- Near Death Exp. Of an Spiritual Afterlife.
I'm obsessed with this video - I've watched the others - Laura Benanti and Sierra Bogess - both of whom are incredible talents and I love them - but Rebecca Luker in this is just so amazing - it's so beautiful and so poignant and moving - she really does seem like a spectre - it's kind of creepy even, yet beautiful, if that makes sense (creepy in a beautiful way? Beautiful in a creepy way?!) Creepy is not the right word. I just love it - her voice, the way she moves, so graceful and with as much feeling as her voice.. Wow, I think she's just incredible here (Mandy, you are pretty good too, haha!) The music is just gorgeous too. It's heartbreaking. "A Girl in The Valley" is wonderful too, but this affects me more. I just love it and Rebecca.
They did, they do with all shows and store them in the New York Library, but they apparently didn’t film it until after Mandy left. I’ve also heard it was originally supposed to be broadcast. I would’ve loved a DVD of this.
One of my biggest regrets in life will always be not seeing this show on Broadway. To be fair, I was about 12, so it wasn't really up to me, but I should have begged my parents more. LOL I was fortunate enough to see Rebecca in almost every other show that she did, but nothing will ever beat her and Mandy. ❤
From husband DANNY BURSTEIN: “This is a text I just got from Jessica Molaskey. Thanks, Jess. It means the world to me. “ “There are no words. Only love right now for you and your family and our dear theater family. I don’t remember seeing the whole Broadway community so gutted by a loss. Not ever. I guess because Becca seemed so other worldly, so born of a place that mere mortals only dream of. So full of light and genius. Yes genius when she opened her mouth. The music and love that poured out of her shining soul shall live forever. In a different time we would all gather on this Christmas Eve and hug you and drink something and sit shiva for your “shiska goddess” and remember stories. I can think of a story about 26 years ago when a troupe of actors went out to dinner in Southern California. We were a large loud table tucked in a corner of a restaurant. Someone, maybe it was our dear George, threw down the gauntlet to tell the dirtiest joke. I might have known one safe one. The winner of the evening was Becca who told joke after filthy joke until our stomachs hurt from laughing so hard. The jokes were somehow funnier coming out of that angelic human. I think she knew it. The bottom line is we were better for knowing her. I guess that’s the whole point of this mysterious life. Leaving the joint a better place than before you got there. She sure did that. I know you have battalions of wonderful souls who love you. Just want to let you know that if you ever need a shoulder I’m here day or night. Who sleeps these days anyway. I love you. Xoxoxo Molaskey. I was privileged to see & hear “Ms. Luker’s angelic voice” as Lily in THE SECRET GARDEN at the Saint James Theatre in 1991 & as Maria Von Trapp in the 1998 revival of THE SOUND OF MUSIC at the Martin Beck Theatre in NYC. When I said earlier that we lost a lot of people this year...we indeed lost a LOT. We also recently lost NICK CORDERO (Bullets Over Broadway), MARIN MAZZIE (Kiss Me Kate, Passion, Ragtime) and ANNE REINKING (All That Jazz, Annie, Fosse). Broadway just got darker. R.I.P. to ALL WE LOST THIS YEAR. I shed a tear for those who left us. So gutted...and destroyed watching Ms. Luker perform, proving once again the LOSS we have is great and irreplaceable. Ugh. 2020 can’t get over any sooner for me. It’s just too much....TOO MUCH.
This is especially haunting now that Rebecca Luke’s is no longer among the living. She made this musical so special for me as a child. I grew up wanting to be her in this role

Tears. Sing in Heaven, Rebecca.

Mourning the loss today of Rebecca Luker. This song is particularly poignant now.
Agreed 😢
😭😭😭😭😭😭 that's why I was looking it up too, may she RIP 💔🙏

@Robert Lee, Countertenor I also have a deep feeling of shock. It’s very hard to process.
It takes on a whole new meaning in the wake of her death...just replace lily with her and archibald with Danny...
Pure Broadway Gold. Their voices sound heavenly together. Mandy Patinkin & Rebecca Luker will *always* be the definitive Archibald & Lily for me. 🥰
Probably the purest voice since Julie Andrews. I absolutely adored her. She was one of my idols when I was a young soprano back in the 90s. Now she sings with the angels. Rest In Peace, Rebecca.

How can such beauty be no more? Her voice was a gift to humankind. Very sad today.

Such a loss of her most beautiful soprano voice. 😢 Singing with the angels now.
Too perfect...she was remarkable...we were so blessed to have her with us.
I was one of her accompanists at Montevallo University, she also sang frequently at my church in Birmingham, St. Andrews Episcopal Church.
Jim Frazier here.....I too remember those days.....I had the same teacher....he's gone now
What was she like as a person?
Rest In Peace Rebecca. Thank You for sharing your gift.
The most beautiful song and the most beautiful voice. I am just sobbing. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Your gift to the world is greatly received. Thank you Rebecca

An angel has gained her wings, rest easy Rebecca
I sang this early in my training & aspired to sound so effortlessly flawless like Ms. Luker.
May her memories be a blessing to her family 💔

Beautiful. RIP Rebecca, gone too soon.
Rebecca the goddess. Wishing her so much love right now.
She makes my heart cry...
RIP Rebecca Luker. :(
Rest in peace Rebecca
Perfect. Rest in peace to a beautiful artist.
My absolute favorite 😢❤️

It’s a bit haunting and ethereal, I think those are the words you were looking for. I agree, others are fantastic but Rebecca will always be Lily.
@@musicaltheatrevideosyoutube Yes, thank you, my brain isn't working the way it should these days!
WHY didn't they film the entire show professionally? So many great performances lost! Bummer...
They did, they do with all shows and store them in the New York Library, but they apparently didn’t film it until after Mandy left. I’ve also heard it was originally supposed to be broadcast. I would’ve loved a DVD of this.
Oh my gosh thank u so much for making this accounttttt I’m in love with TSG
I’m so glad you like it! I’ll definitely be working on getting the pro shots up :)
This song sends me to heaven.
How could I ever know?愿你的花园春光永驻。

Rebecca Luker died of ALS at 8:59 very shortly after she was diagnosed. What a loss!
