Underrated good composer.
Аctually, a mediocre composer, but he did write half a dozen of great works. A paradox.
@@RusskyVoyennyKorablIdiNakhui Why mediocre ?
@@Dylonely42 Well, he wrote a whole lot of really so-so works. Most of his symphonies, for example. As a pianist I was particularly interested in piano concerti, of course- - most are crap. But then there is No. 4, which is, of course, a truly great work. Followed by No. 5 which is truly unmemorable. So overall, he does not even register in the first line of great composers -- but he has great works! Very weird . . .
@@RusskyVoyennyKorablIdiNakhui Not as good as his pupil Tchaikovsky ;)
@@Dylonely42 Yes, definitely! Apparently, it annoyed him immensely. They were practically contemporaries, the difference in age was not that much, and when P.I. started going up, and no one would pay any attention at A.G., that was a very awkward situation. 🙂 Are you aware that there may (may!) be an actual recording of AG at the piano? No way to prove it, of course, but the quality of that particular pianist is off the charts -- ua-cam.com/video/DGO_CRGQSSc/v-deo.html
I actually looked at those scores -- he has a devil may care attitude to the written text, rewrites texture, crazy tempi, and -- particularly delicious -- improves the ending of Tchaikovsky's song. I can totally see this: "well, Pyotr Ilich, you did not quite end this the right way. Here's how to do it."
