To be honest, I would mostly be mad at Baze. Cate gave her up, but she thought she was giving her better opportunities. Baze, on the other hand, didn't care about the baby. He assumed that Cate would just "take care of it" as he so eloquently put it.
Boo. How can you be at fault for agreeing to an adoption or not following up on a child you never knew existed? Yes, maybe he wanted her to not have the child, but that doesn't mean his actions caused Lex harm, since he didn't know. Had he known (and done nothing) sure... he'd be equally at fault. More over... she must have lied about the father at the adoption agency/state since you can't give kids up for adoption without both signatures. That and the lie 100% removed any chance he might have had to do anything. Maybe he'd ignore Lex? Maybe he'd tell his parents... who might petition for custody? Maybe he'd require the adopted parents send updates every year. Maybe he'd feel guilty and just check up on her? Or maybe he'd say f-it and keep her? Or at least stay in contact with DHS to be in her life, check-in on her, or at least be there to be contacted when he was older -- most foster care placements are not permanent. Given how wealthy his parents were... good chance they would take Lex in. Only... we'll never know. Cate remove any possible choice and hence all those chances to save Lex. If he knew... then sure... both deserve the blame. Personally, I would have gone ballistic from the first episode and sued Cate, the adoption agency, her parents (they must have know), and state for a clearly illegal adoption and putting a kid into foster care without contacting him or any of his family. (Accepting that the adoption and DHS placement are fantasy if he's on BC).
The foster system irl would never find Lux another placement just because her parents are having personal problems. They would both have to be homeless and in prison before that happened. Most of the time they would keep them with the bio family no matter what.
