Introduction to MIXOLYDIAN scale - and beyond...

  • We start up easy discovering the Mixolydian characteristics. Then we create an expanded left hand chord and we improvise a solo with the right hand. Then we discuss the so called "avoid" note and we find out that the "avoid" note is not so dangerous after all. Finally we make another thrilling jazz scale that is almost like the Mixolydian...
    We start up very easy and we put on more stuff as we go along...

    In the video I refer to this other NewJazz lesson about the minor melodic modes: • 7 great Jazz scales - ...
    In the next jazz lesson we'll use Mixolydian to play a blues: • Learn Simple BLUES PIA...

      I agree. Often theory lessons can busy the mind. But the way Oliver teaches is zen-like. It actually simplifies things, empties the mind in its clarity. I find it relaxing. That's a sign of great teacher.

    This is the most elegantly clear explanation of how to form Mixolydian chords I have ever seen. You are unlocking chord theory after many years for this dyslexic struggler. There are many great players, but so few truly great teachers, thank you Oliver.

    Your videos are excellent. You teach clearly and gradualy. You are committed and worried about the understanting. And I haven't even mentioned how you dominate the subject.
    I would like to know if it is possible for you to please post a video teaching how to schematicaly and gradually practice and learn how to play chords rithmically while improvising at the same time in jazz and blues music. (Sorry for bothering you asking things)

    Thank you for a wonderful lesson. Where are you located and is Jazz popular there? Unfortunately where I live it is not doing well. I'm hoping for an uprising lol. Some people don't even know what it is and they mis-bill R&B music as "jazz" in some venues. I personally met an establishment manager who didn't know there was a difference.

    • @NewJazz
      @NewJazz  6 років тому

      Thanks :) I'm from Denmark. I don't think that Jazz is particular popular here either.
      For me Jazz is many things... primarily "improvised" Music. Improvised musik is spontaneous, immediate and unpredictable. That's what I like about Jazz. Music with these properties - Jazz Music - has eternal life and will always survive the different eras of music styles. So don't listen to the "established manager" - make your own music, your own spontaneous sound - show people what Music is! The best regards Oliver

    Jazz is an expression of personal achievement. It is intellectual and spiritual athleticism combined with grace of perception. What a jazz musician finds is a form so deep and inclusive that it sucks into itself all the world’s music and sublimates these musics into an idiom that blends blues and improvisation. A practitioner of jazz is much like a yogi or monk who undertakes a life of contemplation. When musicians arrive together to make music they bring their valise of masteries, their real and fake books, their tools and tuners. Nowadays we have no guides except jazz musicians. The world may not know this. But WE do.

    • @NewJazz
      @NewJazz  5 років тому +1

      Brilliant input - I really haven't thought about that. I guess that you don't hear the tritone interval as a harsh dissonant because the #4 step functions as a upper structure note (#11) far above the bass note - so we actually have a tritone plus at least one octave... best regards Oliver

    There is no such thing as "avoid note" * .
    "Avoid note" creates dissonance,dissonance means emotions.
    Funny that so-called "avoid note" it is also a characteristic note :)
    - Characteristic degrees of c ionian scale?
    - f and b.
    - What is the "avoid note" for c ionian?
    - F
    - So,how to get a characteristic ionian mood?
    - By avoiding this mood.
    - Exelent!Now You are a Ultra Jazzman :D
    * just like "diabolus in musica",medieval superstition.

    • @NewJazz
      @NewJazz  6 років тому +1

      I totally agree. I don't know who invented this term "avoid note". But it is difficult to see the point in avoiding a "characteristic" note as you say. And why should we not be allowed to play a dissonance? No dissonances = no consonances = no Music...

    Interesting video btw. Any thoughts on the best chords to use in the Mixolydian scale?
    Like the IV - V - I or II - V - I, in much music.

    • @NewJazz
      @NewJazz  5 років тому

      Yes, Danish :) The Mixolydian scale is used for 7th chords, because the 7th chord fits the scale. For example the C Mixolydian contains the C7 chord.
      In the next lesson we'll learn much more about scales, and we'll also learn when to use the scales (on what chords). I think the lesson will be done and uploaded approximately mid next week... Best regards from Oliver
