Welcome to Amity Tracks. This is a channel where we discuss a wide range of music related topics. The focus will be on music from the 1960’s through the 1990’s, but not exclusively. Classic rock, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, hard rock, jazz, blues, folk, country, soul…all genres are fair game. From time to time we may dabble in other popular culture, such as film, history or sports. But music is primarily what we do here. The focus is on the music and the artists. We hope to encourage an open and dynamic community with fun and informative discussions not only in the videos, but also in the comments section. Please note that, while disagreement and discussion is welcome, no personal attacks or out of bounds comments will be tolerated. We want to be a part of the positive larger vinyl community and other like-minded, music focused communities.

Peter Gabriel is a musical genius in my opinion. He has been in my life since I was eight, I really hope there is more to come. I prefer the dark mixes, but no surprise there. Thank you for your reaction

There will be a boxset of all the stuff released in March.

Great to hear your thought on this. I listened to tracks only occasionally as they were released, so much of it is new to me. I’m overwhelmed and a little irked at the lack of indecision on his part. You’d think after all this time he’d have a definitive version/mix. But I do like what I hear and it’s great to have him back. I’ve listened to the bright side mix the most. Dark side seemed more like a rock record to me. Going to keep listening before purchasing, because it seems Peter Gabriel has passed his indecision on to me.

Having listened to them both quite a bit, I suggest you go to the Dark Side, my friend.

Thanks for the review! I found it fair and balanced, and without the ridiculous fawning and fanboyism about this album that I see in quite a few other places.
I've really struggled whether I should write anything at all about this album, because my opinion of it seems to be a lot more negative than just about anyone elses. But heck, now I'm writing anyway so at least there's a different/another perspective out there.
Fair background - I grew up with Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush in the late 70's and 80's and mostly loved them to bits. It was, and still is, a really important part of my musical diet and inspiration, staying with me for life. I guess you could say I'm a fairly big PG fan, and I consider the best of his pieces to be timeless masterpieces, so it's not like I'm down on PG in general, far from it. I think the man is a musical genius.
Also, what should I compare this album to? What's generally on the radio today? Then it's glorious. The worst of PG? Well, then it's Ok. The best of PG? Well, that's what I've chosen to do, because I think that's what makes most sense in most cases, and because in general PG sets such a high bar as a musician.
Ok, I've gotta say something positive about I/O first, because there's always something positive to be said: I think Tony's bassplaying is wonderful, as always. I think the drumming is good. I think Peters voice, although more tired and without the bite, is still good and he can just about carry it, but not for much longer I think. I think the album as a whole is very even, homogenic and balanced. The best two tracks on the album I find to be "Love Can Heal" and "Road to Joy". Love Can Heal is the only track on the album that can emotianally grab me, somewhat, in a few passages.
With that out of the way - I don't think of this as a good PG album, at all. It's tired, mostly toothless with no bite or catch, mostly forgettable and the worst sin of any work of PG - mostly boring. That's right, boring! It's overproduced, with bloated and muddy sound and way too many layers that doesn't do it any good. It mostly sounds watered out and drowned in tracks.
So there it is, I got it out of my system. It's entirely possible that I'm dead wrong on this one, and at any rate musical taste is so highly subjective. I have no doubt that someone listening to PG for the first time will find this quite enjoyable. It's just that, if you think of Peters highpoints as I do, and they are REALLY high, this is so very disappointing. Sorry folks, don't shoot the messenger, just one man being honest here.
At any rate, again, good review I think!

Thanks! I appreciate your thoughts, and that's what makes this fun to talk about, the fact that we have our own takes. The way you described I/O is kind of how I felt about Up.

@@amitytracks Yeah, UP is a funny one, very dark, experimental and uneven and I get what you're saying. The album is a mixed bag for me, definately, it does however, for me, have a few wonderful tunes that have 100x the Juice, the passion, the bite, the energy of anything on I/O and I guess that's what really annoys me about it. I would rather have had an extremely uneven I/O with 2-3 monster bangers than what we got. But that's me 🙂

Mr. Amity: I guess you tough time with somebody who takes exceptional pride in his craft. Quite frankly that is what makes Peter Gabriel so great. The fact he doesn't put out albums with most tracks being sub par both in substance and production, like other artists do. There is nothing wrong in getting things right, like Boston's first album, which is a timeless classic. I could name other albums which took a lot of time that received great praise because of its final release.
I am a CD collector so I have the CD version with both mixes. So you were able to listen to the tracks on other electronic devices. You dug the booklet and artwork. Then you go into comparing the new album with other albums. 10minutes into this and I still don't know if you think the album is good or not. Start your video off with I like it or I don't like it, then go into because(s). You need to be more like Peter and check on your content before releasing it on Utube. 131/2 minutes still have no idea if you liked it or not. Out of here!

Nice review Why we need 2 different mixes is probably just a money grab by the record company!! If you buy the CD it’s all included but you have to buy both albums to get the different mixes And there is hardly any difference between the two The albums are expensive so you’re going to spend 80 bucks for both albums Money grab!!!

PG has been giving away every track on this album now for months. All the mixes, free. I prefer tangible media so I'll buy them on CD but that's a pretty incompetent "money grab" to give it all away.

I found a noticeable difference between the mixes. Preferring the dark side mixes, I bought that one on vinyl. But I also bought the CD set with all of them.

@@amitytracks Yes the CD route is probably the wayto go because it comes with both mixes With vinyl you have to get both copies separately The difference between them is so small but I will get the CD
