  • November 27, 2018 performance of the "Veni, Veni Emmanuel" Advent hymn in the Chapel of St. Basil by the University of St. Thomas Schola Cantorum, led by Michael S. Richardson.
    The polyphonic portion involves men and women singing the main chant, along with a group of men holding the lower drone notes and a group of women holding the upper drone notes on the words "Veni" and "Gaude" in a manner akin to the drawn-out tenor lines in the Notre Dame school of polyphony that flourished from the 12th to 13th c. in Paris.
    In the liturgical music of the Notre Dame school of polyphony, the tenor part would hold each note of the original Gregorian Chant melody for varying lengths while 1 to even 3 additional parts would sing vocal embellishments and independent melodic lines above.
