Hawk chases pigeon into a shop… and BOTH get stuck! (Wildlife Rescue)

- As any wildlife rescuer can tell you, calls to rescue a bird of prey stuck in a large building are always some of the most difficult to do...
Not only did this sparrowhawk have a HUGE shop to fly around in, we also had to rescue the unlucky pigeon that she'd chased inside too!

What an amazing rescue guys. I have never seen a Sparrow Hawk play dead, that’s one lucky pigeon.
Lucky pigeon indeed. I would have grabbed it and made stew out of it.
Simon is a guy who can smile even after the frustration of that little fluff ball flying out of the net again. It shows how much Simon loves these creatures!
100 % true
Very true 😂
Tytyty I love watching your rescues.
I always watch with full confidence, knowing if ANYONE can rescue ANY innocent animal from even the most dire circumstances, it's YOU. You are truly masters of your craft. I know I am but one of many animal lovers who are eternally grateful to you.🙏♥️🇺🇲✌
So glad you saved that pigeon, and....Jacob does NOT need a haircut, gorgeous hair,
2-4-1 rescue releases. Well done Simon (and your two apprentices) Lawrie and Jacob.
Thank you for everything you do or the animals.💗💗💗💗.
The pigeon is using the pigeon spikes as protection against predators. 😂 Well done, team! Two birds in one hour. Very efficient! 👍
Pigeons are damned smart. Scarily/impressively so. I have rescued a few and one, with a minor handicap, stayed. At one point, we had a few mice in the place. This pigeon likes having food dishes in lots of different places and also likes eating very messily, depending on her moods. But then she figured out that eating messily drew the mice to her. So she stopped being messy in the spot where she was spending most of her time, but one day, I watched her dropping food from a high spot and looking at the floor to see what would happen.
@@angelinasouren The place i work at tried to get rid of the pigeons breeding in the garden, so they put a net over it. But the building has automatic doors, and a pair of pigeons figured out to wait for someone to activate the doors so they could cross in and out. But others keep getting stuck in the damn net. Pigeons are both very smart and very stupid.
@@feuerling Ah, ask your employer to use different netting with the finest mesh size they can find. Preferably 5 mm or smaller.
Also, it may be different pigeons who get stuck, not stupid pigeons who keep getting stuck. They may not be able to see the netting at the moment.
What kind of place do you work at, where are the pigeons nesting? Is it a garden center with an indoor garden with many plant pots, or what? What makes it so attractive for them? What often works very well is offering them nesting spots that are so irresistible to them that they don't want to nest anywhere else. Presence of food and good water nearby, good shelter, low risk from predators are factors.
@@angelinasouren wrong, they just know where they sleep at night. For the rest: pigeons are dirty, they destroy everything with their shit and cant even eat properly. They throw stuff into the air till something breaks off. Other birds would grab the food with one foot and then tear off pieces.
Pigeons are the dumbest birds.
The way the sparrow hawk lumped playing dead was kind of funny though
I don’t like Wildlife Aid I adore Wildlife Aid and all the amazing rescue work that Simon and the team do in rescuing and rehabilitating all creatures great and small . Thank you guys you all are a true blessing Cheers Kylie from Australia 🇦🇺 ❤
I didn't realize they had Wickes over there. Also looks like there weren't many customers either. Thanks for the Vid!
Isn't Jacob just cute as a button. I love his hair. Well done guys. You guys are truly a blessing to watch. Special people!!!! Lawrie is tall and handsome and such an incredible person to be by Simons side learning everything he can. ❤️❤️❤️❤️Much love to you all. Love you Simon. Praying for you.
How you caught that Sparrowhawk in a building that vast was nothing short of a miracle. I was called to a builder's small warehouse to rescue one in 1991 and two of us with two landing nets took nearly 2 hours! Very well done lads.
Seems like you spent at least a frustrating hour before you finally caught the sparrow hawk. The pigeon seemed an easy rescue after that, but they're never easy until afterwards. Kudos to all of you gentlemen.
Honestly waf is so entertaining and god bless you ppl
You must have been really thirsty after this rescue! Great work again team! 👏 XXX
Simon!
Lawrie!
Jacob!
Heroes!!
Thanks
Wow the precision of those lads
Fantastic work 🙌
Who let the old man on the ladder? The pigeon knows the protection from the pigeon proofing on the roof. Hurray for the team work
Best Two Birds, One Store episode ever :)
The one with the robins is a close second (yeah, it's an office, but still)
Poor pidge. He was def panicked 😱
Simon: "Go on, bird!"
Sparrowhawk: * falls over *
The bird just lying there for a moment made me laugh and then I aspirated some of my own saliva and had a coughing fit. 😵💫
Excellent rescue!
It's a buy one get one free ! 😁 Another great rescue guys! Does each staffer pick what their title is going to be? 😂
Haha thank you! No-one gets to pick really, it just depends what Lawrie comes up with when editing at 3am ;)
@@wildlifeaid So funny! I always enjoy reading who's going to get what title. Thanks for the extra giggle!
Well done there, guys🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
You guys are amazing!
Great work once again, gents!
I think you guys need a special catching net that closes on itself with a press of a button (kinda similar to the one you use for foxes, but a special one for birds).
Love your zen-like attitude, Simon! 😁🥰
Great rescue, everyone! ❤
Oh, you guys have so much patience. Good job, really good job.
What a workout, made me tired just watching, good job.
I think Jacob doesn't have enough hair.
This video gave me flash backs to a other videos.
Lawrie's comment about when he misses - pole issue during swan rescue
Reminder to watch out for talons - Simon getting clawed (ouch)
Pigeon in a tight place - deer wedged between shed and wall
The only thing pigeons are good for is they make a good soup. Well, they are ideal food for other animals, too.
3:03 Oh, young man
Oh my goodness, poor birds 🤣
As I'm watching this, the thought occurred that maybe a drawstring mechanism would be helpful to close the netting around the captured bird to get around the bounciness of the second net which allows escape. Is there a way to get someone to rig something up like that?
I've seen a pidgeon that built a nest among some pidgeon spkies.
As usual 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Can you tell me what sort of nets and poles you use?
We use carbon fibre landing nets and poles normally used for fishing. We have tried many others, but few are light enough to be agile at 12m+ high
This is my comment. There are many others like it, but this one is mine.
Might have been easier to attract the Sparrow Hawk with some food. ❤️
👏❤️❤️❤️
I am reminded of the rules of warfare: When war-ships belonging to both belligerents are present simultaneously in a neutral port or roadstead, a period of not less than twenty-four hours must elapse between the departure of the ship belonging to one belligerent and the departure of the ship belonging to the other.
damn if you visited the castle there is a secret food place just next to it. Its greek food and its called Meet the greek. I recommend a chicken giros, utterly amazing
5:19
"Fly away hawk, you're free!"
*plays dead*
I laughed out loud!
Tricky Bird. So nice...😀
Man Simon is one tough man! I can't believe how active he is whilst going through chemo!
He's amazing 💪❤
WOW, amazing rescues of these two birds !! it was a very young pigeon !! Thank u all so very much !! not an easy rescue !! 🕊🦅
The luckiest pigeon! Loved the point of letting it go the opposite end from the sparrowhawk 😂😂 everyone gets a fair chance
This is totally redicilos .... Rescuing a killer and a innocent victim and releasing them again in a yard
Well done once again, Simon, Lawrie, Jacob and all the other helpers, on-site or back at Wildlife Aid HQ. Thank you for all your amazing and ongoing efforts.
I am not sure why anyone would spend a lot of time worrying about a pidgion.
This would actually be a great premise for a movie. Predator and prey get trapped in a shop and have to ultimately get along and evade the scary humans and the twist is that the humans were trying to help them all along. lol
Never a dull moment! Great job!
Best way to release birds stuck indoors is to turn all lights off, block windows from sunlight and open all doors. The birds will go towards the light.
That can work well for some birds, but birds of prey like sparrowhawks are a little more tricky. They won't fly down and through a gap so, unless the door is floor to ceiling, they will often miss it.
Unfortunately this store was also still open and they could not close just for us :)
Fantastic double rescue-release guys 💜
I was absolutely gutted for you when that sneaky sparrowhawk slipped out of the nets that first time... think I actually let out an audible gasp of horror! xXx
So happy to see Simon. What a great man he is. Hello from an animal lover from the u.s. You guys are so well coordinated. It was so close with those nets that first time. What a workout that turned out to be. These are some of the most thrilling, suspenseful and job-well-done vids on the internet. Love those raptors. Just saw a bald eagle in my neighborhood for the first time a few days ago and I've lived here for approx. 60 yrs.
AWESOME JOB, Simon, Lawrie and Jacob!!! The suspense was intense : D
And Douglas😌
"DUDE! STOP TRYING TO CAPTURE ME! I ONLY WANTED TO LOOK AT THE HAMMERS!"
Oh, oh... that was a lot of effort! 😳
Thank you on behalf of the 2 birds. 😃👍
Does it make sense to wait for 1 or 2 days so that the birds aren't that agile anymore in such tall warehouses? 🤔
Since their condition is unknown before capture, this may not be a good idea. If they're already thin or dehydrated, or injured, it is only prolonging their suffering. Plus, if nobody is chasing them, they'll probably just sit and relax after some time.
I swear, I wish everyone who builds a structure like this would put a trap door in the roof, just to release the birds who get trapped. They instinctively go UP to escape and you could get them out in minutes.
Hmmm. Trap door in the roof. Would need to be burglar proof.
Would you pay for a trap door for an occurance that in all liklihood would never happen and as it happens pigeons particularly find there way into all manner of buildings and find there way out...
@@helenamcginty4920 Like the front doots?
Yes! Good idea, must be feasible. These birds must be leaving droppings over stock etc. so it must be worth the cost. X
@@helenamcginty4920 - I would think burglar-proof would be easy enough.
Jacob needs to let those golden locks grow! Just imagine that shoulder length mane...
"You're being a pedestrian pigeon!" Love it!
If only there were a way to make a really tall net with some sort of drawstring to close it
Well there is, would require the drawstring going down the middle of the rod and around the top of the net and a slightly deeper net in order to get the animal into the bag part. Only issue then is you have the issues of catching the animal's neck within the loop as you close it which is going to cause injury since the animal will panic even more, and being a deeper net there is more chance of catching the net on something
We've looked for one of those for about 5 years but have never found anything! If anyone does find one, please do let us know as we'd be first in line!
I would be so frustrated chasing birds around a warehouse. Absolutely no patience for that sort of thing here. But these guys retain their sense of humor every time. Great job, guys!
My surname means "sparrowhawk". Thanks for rescuing my namesake!
"trying to hide behind glass" hahaha :D
That was a great move Lawrie and Simon ( sorry didn’t hear the other man’s name )
TY for rescuing more of our wildlife 💕
Jacob is the one that needs a haircut. Lol
@@susannefoxforcefourpickeri9358 LOL TY . He looks like a surfer 😆
There is also Douglas Anderson @ 0:38 who does not seem to need a haircut that bad.😉
*puts bird down*
*Bird just tips over*
"MUTLEY,.. DOOO SOMETHING!!!!"
That pigeon was FAR more crafty in finding a good hiding spot than the sparrow hawk was. LOL There are sparrows living inside my local big box hardware store, year round I believe. Of course, pigeons and sparrow hawks wouldn't exactly be a good fit for that environment. Beautifully done, once again, Wildlife Aid! 👍😁
Amazing rescue! You all really work well as a team. So fluid.
It's because you're all intensely focused on the exact same goal and outcome.
They really make Fluttershy proud
@@Wissle If only Simon or Lawrie could employ The Stare at Fluttershy's level. It would help in some of these rescues. 😅
@@neutraltral8757 Heh, big true
Tut, Tut, Tut ...
The Wickes divvies couldn't even turn the naff piped music OFF either ...
i live in guildford and love your vids
The ladder's logo with Lawrie standing on it is perfect!
I love how thoughtful you are releasing the pigeon on the 'safe' side of the building.
Thank you again for a great and successful rescue!
Don't tell them the pigeon spikes are not effective. They will hang up pigeon nets and those are far more devastating and cruel. Sometimes better to let them think the pigeon spikes work.
I cannot believe you let go that sparrow hawk with attempted murder on his hands .... I mean talons
Well done to all of you such patience rescuing the sparrowhawk and the pigeon .
Man, Lawrie, you're so invisible behind that glass wall :)
I hope Wickes makes a generous donation
Unlucky but also very lucky pigeon there
I imagine the pigeon wants to take up residence in this building rather than go back outside with the hawk. :D
God...Seemed like a wild goose chase...
Climb the ladder and lend a steady hand to the poles
looks like an accipeter
Correct, the European sparrowhawk's scientific name is Accipiter nisus
Amazing! Thank you!
there is nothing, that does not exist, they say. 🙄
Knew this was going to be a good one at 9 mins. long...well done to you all. Would that be normal though for a Sparrowhawk to go after a Pidge? All the best.
Adult female sparrowhawks are large enough and capable of chasing and catching pigeons
Bedankt
Very well done!!! Thank you!
Well done!
i cannot believe you caught the hawk !!!! really impressive guys !!!!
First attempt you had the hawk until Simon disrupted you, shame.
Then the team successfully caught let it go
Lawrie always on the case to catch and release.
Well done all of you. Wonder if the sparrow hawk came back for its pigeon lunch!!!!
Well done Wickes, for calling in wildlife rescuers, rather than someone with a gun
You guys are amazing!
Heads right to the Pidgeon spikes!! ROTFLMAO!! Thanks for all the wonderful work you do saving the animals!! 🤣🤣for the bird, not you.
That's phenomenal work. Well done. There's gotta be a handful of teams that could have made those rescues.
Oh I went through this a couple of times doing local pigeon rescues a few years back. One was in a place like this (though not as large), and the other in a gym. I got a good workout on both those occasions!
I'll bet that's a workout for your arms and shoulders
