I've always thought that the speed stat better represent reaction and attack speed, not movement speed. That way Latios/Latias can fly faster, even if Purugly moves first in battle
I remember Mars' Purugly in DPPt, who was only difficult because your Pokémon was not fully evolved. It's like beating up a school bully after taking self-defense training.
Funnily enough, Mars' Purugly's difficulty even more artificial than just Purugly's base stats. Her level 16/17 purugly is illegal, as Glameow doesn't evolve until level 38. Jupiter's Skuntank also has a less pronounced version of this where her Skuntank illegally knows Night Slash at level 20 before it could possibly learn the move. Truly, the most heinous acts of Team Galactic.
Glameow and Purugly are only available natively in Sinnoh, and are one of the only lines of Pokémon that have been absent throughout the following four new regions
We were all surprised by its speed, but I'm more surprised by the other stats. You'd expect it to be a bit stronger, since its apparently part tiger, or bulkier since, well, its fat. I guess fighting against it before level 20 makes a big difference in perspective.
Maybe the fat doesn’t help it defensively because it’s just a flabby kind of fat, not a hardened belly type fat like Snorlax or Slaking And makes sense because this Pokémon is all about making you think it’s something it’s not, it grips it’s own torso with its forked tail to push the fat to the sides like a corset to make itself seem strong and bulky, and it’s speed stat can take some people by surprise because they don’t expect this chunky cat to be quick on its feet xd
I have seen Purugly exactly once in VGC. And that was in a hilarious set of Protect and Last Resort, making it a fast Last Resort bomb. I wanna say Purugly was there instead of Mega Loppuny because they wanted to use the Mega Slot for another Pokemon. It was really funny to see, for sure.
I've always seen Speed in Pokémon to be Speed in Battle, not overall speed. That's why even tho Latias and Latios are faster than Purugly, they are not in game. Think about it, the battles take places in small stadiums, so a tiny cat has much more ways to move around it than a biological plane, since they would need a lot of space to reach their maximum speed. Same way a squirrel would be much faster than an f1 car if they were to race in a narrow and short location
Speed is defined as the ability to move the body in one direction as fast as possible. Agility is the ability to accelerate, decelerate, stabilize, and quickly change directions
Counterpoint: Vikavolt. Even if you want to give Game Freak some credit and suspend your disbelief that hard (I won't), you can't tell me there was a reason for them to make it THAT glacially slow beyond so-called balancing reasons.
It actually wasn't terrible in VGC. I used it once in Gen 6. It got Defiant. Fake Out, Super Fang, Sucker Punch, Return/U-turn. It punished intimidate users
Hot take: Glameow definitely should be earlier in Sinnoh then it is, since you can't get it until after the fifth gym when its counterpart, Stunky, can be found right after the second. Additionally, Glameow should evolve at like Level 28 over 38. Also, I think the reason why Purugly's stats aren't good is so that the first fight against Mars isn't too hard, because people says it's already decently challenging.
I agree with everything you just said ('specially since I'm playing Shining Pearl and recently got Glameow). And that last point I feel is the same reason Onix and later Steelix don't have higher Atk stats. If Onix was the first Gym Leader's Pokemon it definitely could have been stronger.
Purugly is the perfect case for a Pokémon made specifically for an ingame bossfight (Commander Mars in DPP). It's stupidly fast to not be outsped, its defenses are good for the level (16 IIRC) and 84 base attack is (again, at Lv16) super good. Clearly the buff Purugly needs is for it to outspeed Regieleki and then add a move that uses the user's Speed as its attack stat (seriously I think that should actually be a move it would be nice for certain Pokemon)
That's actually a great idea, NGL, they made Body Press and it was a great help for Pokémon with high Defense, so a similar move but for Speed would be a godsend for fast Pokémon that have low offenses, like Purugly, Liepard, Electrode and Whimsicott.
A move that uses speed as attack feels like a surefire way to make some mons way too strong, since that move essentially gives scarfers an attack boost to go with it
As a guy with 6 purugly at home, I can confirm, that their speed stat is wrong. It's not 112, no, it was wrote wrong. It's 1112, like, have you ever seen a fat cat running? Choice Scarf Regieleki be damned, Purugly should've been banned to AG.
Yeah, most people don't know it because they only see cats taking a nap or being sneaky, but they are fast. In fact they can run at almost 50 km/h. Not yours probably, though
It's so weird. It's a fully evolved pokemon that evolves at level 38, but because it's the ace pokemon of a boss character you fight near the beginning of the game, they had to basically neuter it's stats so Mars wouldn't be an overpowered fight. It's fat, so you'd assume it's bulk to at least be decent, it's partly based on a Tiger, and it's Pokedex entry highlights it's aggressive nature, meaning you'd expect it to hit harder. It was given a higher attack to presumably give it a reason to justify using it over Persian who has almost everything else Purugly has but better, but they gave the latter Technician anyway to make up for the difference.
@@Gabry4777 me too! Mothim would be pretty good with just a speed buff, and with Wormadam maybe an HP buff and slight buff for their attacking stats should do it? Oh, and give Sandy cloak Lunge for gods sake lol it's strongest physical stab is bug bite

Surprised it didn’t get one in Arceus. I’m pretty the Purugly line is only catchable in the Sinnoh region, so an older version of it would’ve been cool
I remember hearing about a cool gimmick once where you intentionally get sticky webs magic bounced onto you, and then go to town with defiant/competitive/contrary, and apparently purugly is quite strong on that team style with fake out + quick attack being very effective, even in comparison to powerful higher tier mons with those abilities. it's not incredible, but I thought it was cool and since then have found purugly quite interesting as a pokemon.
I LOVE Purugly, it's one of my favorite Pokemon, but I really wish Glameow was readily available in more games. It feels like they're just never around after Diamond/Pearl
A good buff would be to give it Fluffy as a fourth Ability, Belly Drum, Thrash, Stomping Tantrum and Extreme Speed. All of these fit its design, pokedex entry, and unusual speed. It would definitely be good with these buffs. Plus Fluffy is slang for Fat in some countries, so it fits.
Same here, it was paired with Charizard in the original Gen 1 releases and it’d be nice seeing it since it was never a bad Pokémon in terms of tier placement and performance.
One of my favorite purugly builds I used a lot in ou for funsies was a fake out last resort (only those two moves) set whose defiant boosts could actually threaten landos. Not gonna pretend it wasn’t a giant gimmick with a lot of weaknesses but it still was absolutely a blast seeing the chonky kitty get kills on the biggest threats in the tier ^^
Well, purugly, you were always one of the only fully evolved pokémon I saw and thought right away, "I want one of those" and caught the unevolved form of in anticipation of evolving it.
Purugly could have been so decent with Intimidate as it's hidden ability instead of Defiant. Just letting it Switch in and lower attack, Fake Out, and U-turn out. And if the player could predict the switch, they could use body slam instead of fake out and maybe paralyze an opponent.
Look, I can't think about buffing Purugly if I can't even catch the darn cat, so the real first change is to get Glameow in another game's Regional Dex so that it at least gets some experience.
Most people who think Purugly is bad just have missed the biggest thing it has, Hone Claws! Defiant is nice, but Purugly is one of a ridiculously tiny amount of Pokemon that have a way to raise their accuracy while having a sleep move like Hypnosis. If you can get a single Hone Claws off, Hypnosis is 80 accuracy, with two boosts, it's a guaranteed sleep coming off from a 112 speed stat and with the sleep, it can set up further since it gets free turns! With Sash you are pretty much guaranteed to get at least one HC off, but even without it, if you can somehow increase the odds of the first Hypnosis hitting (eg: Gravity), you can easily snowball fights!
Oh, poor sweet Purugly... One of my favorite Pokémon. Who wants to guess the last time she was in a dex before BDSP and Legends? ORAS for National, PEARL for Regional. Yeah, Purugly has never been in a Regional dex outside Sinnoh.
I'm still having flashbacks to the Battle Maison, with one of the chatelaines and her Purugly. It had a 100% hit rate for Hypnosis and spammed Dream Eater while outspeeding literally all of my pokemon.

I'd say a good buff would be to its defenses: Def to 84 and Spdef to 70 or 80. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't recall many fast tanks out there, and these buffs could make Purugly one. Obviously with 71 hp it still couldn't take too many hits but it would at least allow it some degree of tankiness while also being a decent attacker as well on the side.
I'm surprised he didn't mention when Hypnosis was 70% accurate in DP before being nerfed Perugly had usage. Similarly to Zangoose in 200 though alot more niche.
If Gamefreak had given him 10 more points in HP, Atk and Defense, I'm sure Purugly would had been good in lower tiers. Or maybe some ability like Fur Coat
Interesting how Ambipom, Persian, and Purugly had similar niche sets. Wish they got more strong abilities to pump up their power. How strong would a Pure Power Purugly be?
Even if purugly clearly wasn't made to look appealing it's a really good pokemon character design-wise. I still find it weird that it's not part dark type and that alolan persian is while literally being the same pokemon but without the unique corset aspect.
Can you do a video of an OU pokemon like Tyranitar? (I know you already did a video of Tyranitar and it was amazing, but I want a remake to cover all the new tools Tyranitar got) Also, if we just talked about this pokemon in the intro, How GOOD was Latios ACTUALLY?
With these out of radar Pokémon, I like to see surprise entries like sudden VGC appearance. I remember from some older videos that some Pokémon was covered a little bit in VGC/Doubles with speculations if enough data wasn't available. Not that I have any personal attachment in Purugly, I always saw it kind of random Persian/Delcatty clone and later Liepard done odd. It was just after all the downhill sliding, the surprise mention of 7th place would have been something interesting to listen, giving to Pokémon a high note in the end. I understand it's not possible to do with every Pokémon, especially one-hit wonders with failed gimmicky sets that hasn't been recorded.
Did you know that Glameow and Purugly are only in one regional dex, the one they debuted in of course being Sinnoh, and are postgame-only in a few other mainline titles? They're also a Pearl/Brilliant Pearl exclusive, you can't even get them in Platinum without trading, meaning that most people probably haven't used one on a team.
@@rowanjadon2664 I believe it was after this comment was written, but they did appear in Legends Arceus too. They should include it in more games though, I feel like barely anyone cares about Purugly compared to the other cat Pokemon. Sure Delcatty is even worse competitively, but at least for that, it's memorable.
Great analysis video! Thanks for uploading! I'd give Purugly +5 in ATK, & +10 in every Defense, just because it's fat; It should be "bulkier". Then again, Purugly seems UNDERweight. A typical housecat is at most, 25.4 cm & up to 5 KG, but Purugly is 100 cm & 43.8 kg. If you made a housecat Purugly's size, & applied square cube law, it'd weigh close to 240 kg! At least! Heck, lionesses are 90 to 110 cm, & 120 to 130 kg! Yet Purugly's barely over a third of that mass! For a Pokemon with "Thick Fat", Purugly seems to have all the biological bulk of a balloon, lol. (Also, I wish it was available in more regions.)
I think the most interesting thing about purugly is how elusive it is It can only be caught in the wild in Pearl/ShiningPearl, White 2 hidden grottoes, and Oras Mirage zones
Addendum: Purugly is an S Rank DPP PU Pokémon, and it is a defining offensive pivot, revenge killer, and lead. In BW, Purugly is a high ranking PU Pokémon that is still an effective revenge killer, where the removal of team preview was in exchange for Defiant. In ORAS, Purugly is a top tier ZU Pokémon, taking advantage of Defoggers and helping to remove a number of Eviolites with Knock Off. Purugly remained ZU in SM, but it has fallen into the B ranks due to an increase in the power around it, as well as the diminished power of Knock Off. If Purugly comes back to a full Pokedex in generation 9, I’m going to safely assume that it won’t even be viable in Subzero Used. Gen 8 ZU already has a number of great Normal types this generation, such as Kangaskhan, which outcompete much of Purugly’s niche. On top of that, the removal of Return and Frustration for consistent damaging moves will be difficult for Purugly.
Poor Purugly. I remembered it as the most difficult Pokémon of all the Team Galactic lieutenants. It was really annoying. BTW : always fun to hear the U bomb : UNFORTUNATELY. I always say that if it's coming 😄

I’m loving this new short video and then Longer video it gives me something to watch
How a fat house cat is faster than a jet plane I'll never understand.
I'm surprised he didn't mention when Hypnosis was 70% accurate in DP before being nerfed Perugly had usage. Similarly to Zangoose in 200 though alot more niche.
Ig zangoose was worth mentioning because it was genuine OU material
Purugly gives me PTSD of Mars's battle in dpp
If Purugly is good at anything, it's intimidating me specifically. I always assume it's way bulkier than it is because, I mean look at it.
If Gamefreak had given him 10 more points in HP, Atk and Defense, I'm sure Purugly would had been good in lower tiers. Or maybe some ability like Fur Coat
Man, I have NOT been mentally prepared for FSG's double-feature uploads lately.
Love how everyone memes on Purugly being faster than the Lati Twins, when Starmie and Weavile(first two mons that came in my mind) bully them non-stop
Neither of those is a fat cat though, purugly looks slow so it's surprising that it outsiders the latis.
Interesting how Ambipom, Persian, and Purugly had similar niche sets. Wish they got more strong abilities to pump up their power. How strong would a Pure Power Purugly be?
Purugly honestly looks interesting due it being faster then the speed sound and it’s fat design.
This is owned by Mars.
declared war on my team every single playthrough
Latias & Latios Speed = 110
*Faster than a jet plane.*
Purugly Speed = 112
*Whoooooosh!*
Even if purugly clearly wasn't made to look appealing it's a really good pokemon character design-wise. I still find it weird that it's not part dark type and that alolan persian is while literally being the same pokemon but without the unique corset aspect.
Another double upload tho? I'm liking this.
Would love a Blastoise remake
Literally one of my favorite Pokémon…
Can you do a video of an OU pokemon like Tyranitar? (I know you already did a video of Tyranitar and it was amazing, but I want a remake to cover all the new tools Tyranitar got)
Also, if we just talked about this pokemon in the intro, How GOOD was Latios ACTUALLY?
4:30 "...addition to being offensively threatening, packed an actually useful defensive typing, and thanks to Eviolite, *BULK* "
The delivery of that line reminds me of pingas
6:46 "And so for the first time Purugly was legitimately viable, and a genuine part of the tier."
Don't you mean "first _and last_?" :P
Did you know that Glameow and Purugly are only in one regional dex, the one they debuted in of course being Sinnoh, and are postgame-only in a few other mainline titles? They're also a Pearl/Brilliant Pearl exclusive, you can't even get them in Platinum without trading, meaning that most people probably haven't used one on a team.
technically you can get purugly after the kyogre/groudon event in oras in one of those mirage spots iirc
They're also hidden in one of the Hidden Grottos in Black 2 & White 2. But that's after u beat the main game.
Ya it's honestly really unfortunate for them. How has a pokemon that existed for such a long not been in another regional dex since it's debut?
@@rowanjadon2664 I believe it was after this comment was written, but they did appear in Legends Arceus too.
They should include it in more games though, I feel like barely anyone cares about Purugly compared to the other cat Pokemon. Sure Delcatty is even worse competitively, but at least for that, it's memorable.
Im loving these little cup then decent video thing you’re doin
It's bizarre that speed is its highest trait considering its design looks to be anything but speedy
And Scrafty looks slim and fit and not so resistant but it's slow and its highest stats are its defenses.
Let's get the another cat pokemon, lieperd .I've seen it on a ton of vgc teams and I'd like to see how well it's done.
*Delcatty stares at you*
Again with the two vids in one day!
FSG stay astounding me!
This Pokémon’s speed and appearance in the anime when Meowth fell out of love upon evolution makes me laugh.
I think the most interesting thing about purugly is how elusive it is
It can only be caught in the wild in Pearl/ShiningPearl, White 2 hidden grottoes, and Oras Mirage zones
I love your videos and I love that you uploaded 2 videos in one day
I really wonder about its speed stat. Was that a typo when it was programmed? Is there a hidden lore about speedy fat cats?
On top of that, the removal of Return and Frustration for consistent damaging moves will be difficult for Purugly.
purugly is a very beautiful pokemon i am glad you made this video :)
Poor Purugly. I remembered it as the most difficult Pokémon of all the Team Galactic lieutenants. It was really annoying.
BTW : always fun to hear the U bomb : UNFORTUNATELY. I always say that if it's coming 😄
Ah yes, the Pokémon faster than Luxray.
Criminally underrated mon. It needs a huge attack buff
The stuff of nightmares. I remember fighting this thing on Mars's team in Valley Windworks. Also why does it have 116 base Speed?
It's fat but it's still a cat, they're agile creatures with quick reflexes. How it's faster than the Lati twins tho is beyond me. XD
*112, and I assume it’s due to using its tail as a corset like thing to make it leaner
Akhil. Unless u got an Monferno and use Mach Punch on it. That works better.
I think purugly is actually the most forgotten Pokémon’. All the other most forgettable are now memorable because they are talked about for being forgettable .
There should be a video called the Purugly theorem. 😂
Kinda weird how it's called Purugly when it's actually pretty darn cute
I just now realized I have never seen Purugly sprite in Gen 5
Its pretty good
Purugly has always confused me. With its personality, I thought it'd be part Dark type, but nope. And then it's stats are just weird for what it is tbh.
AGAIN, WE DON'T USE THE WORD ITS AS A PRONOUN IF THERE'S AN APOPSTROPHE IN IT!
What is faster:
- An alien Pokémon capable of cutting a whole steel tower with one stroke of its blade (Kartana)
- Chonky catto.
Buff idea for Purugly: +10 Defense , +20 Attack, and then give it Thrash, Cotton Guard, and Extreme Speed
Bruh you guys did Purugly before you did Lanturn? Cmon.
Who asked
0:20 I'm gonna nickname my Purugly as 'Puretty' now
