Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today, on our 2022 Toyota RAV4, we're gonna be showing you how to install the Curt trailer wiring harness. But before we do that, why don't we check it out and make sure that this is gonna work for you. When it comes to the Toyota RAV4, really popular SUVs and for good reason. These things run great, last a long time and they're pretty capable too. And so, you're gonna get some people out here wanting to pull some trailers around.
And if that's what you plan on doing, that's where the trailer wiring is gonna come into play. And what this is going to do is plug into your trailer and provide it with the lighting signals that you're gonna need to not only be safe but legal as well. So, with this one, you're gonna get the turn signals, your running lights as well as your brake lights. So, you'll have all your bases covered there. This is gonna have a four-way flat-type connector, which is a super common type of connector.
And honestly, just about anything that you're probably gonna be pulling with the RAV4 is gonna have this type of connector. So, chances are really good, whatever trailer you're wanting to tow, this is gonna be able to hook up to it. One thing that is pretty cool is how you're able to set the wiring up. So, you can have it come outside of your vehicle, something like we have here today. And just loop it around your safety chain opening.
I don't think it looks too bad or like that. Or you can always get a bracket, too, that you can attach to your hitch and mount it up that way. Or you can even leave it inside under your spare tire or by your spare tire, that little storage compartment. And whenever you're ready to use this, you can just drape it over your rear fascia or your rear bumper and plug it in that way too. So, a bunch of different ways you can do things with this.
And I wanna mention, the wiring kit is going to work with the vehicles that are just standard gasoline engines as well as hybrid models. Matter of fact, we have a hybrid model here today. So, regardless on what submodel you got, it is gonna plug in. Other than that, though, a wiring kit that's gonna get the job done. As far as getting this installed goes, it's really not too bad. Everything kinda just plugs in. And not a lot of routing or anything along those lines. A little bit, but it's really not too bad. So, as long as you take your time and stay focused, you really shouldn't run into too many issues. But speaking of that, why don't we go ahead and hook this up together now. To begin our installation, we're gonna be here at the back of our RAV4. And we're gonna open up our hatch 'cause we're gonna be working in this area to get to some of our connectors and whatnot. And what you wanna do is remove the floor coverings in here. So, a lot of these will just lift right up. And we can set them off to the sides. We got our main one. And then these ones here on the side, I believe these just kinda pop up. So, I'll do the same thing for the one over here as well. What we can do now is remove this center threshold piece. And with these, there's no screws or anything holding it in, just plastic fasteners. So, I like to just kinda grab the bottom and just kinda wiggle it to kinda start to work it loose. And then you can take a trim tool like this or even a flathead screwdriver and kinda just pry underneath it and start to kinda work it along. Then it will release and we can set it to the side. Now, if you look where our panel meets this upper portion, there's gonna be a fastener in there. It's a push pin one. You can grab a flathead, pry the center of it out. You should be able to grab the whole thing and get it removed. And then, if we follow that down, here's this cargo hook. And where that cargo hook is, you can take that off. There's gonna be a 10-millimeter-head bolt in the middle of it. We'll also get this removed. And we're gonna do the same process to the other side of our vehicle as well. Over here on the passenger's side, with our RAV4 being a hybrid model, the battery is gonna be located behind this panel. If you have a standard model, the battery's probably under the hood. I don't know for sure, but I just wanted to mention this. But in our case, we're going to take this center section piece. You just pry up on it and pop this out and set it to the side. Moving back to the driver's side, we can get this panel pulled off some. So, you just kinda get behind it here and release it. And then inside, if you look, hopefully, we can get a decent look at it, there's a connector plug, this one right here. And that's gonna be what we need
This video helped me install the same harness on my Rav! Thank you for lending a hand.
Glad it helped!
Just did this on my rav4 hybrid. Took me 3 hours 😂 but I got it done. 👍
Outstanding, good job!!

I just finished wiring just with this video. Thank you very much!
I used electrical wire nuts to join the black wires from battery. Felt more strong connection and they won't tear off easily
You're welcome, we're glad we could help. Wire nuts aren't the best choice for an automotive application. The best bet is to solder the connection and protect it with heat shrink tubing like # DW05451

You’re a genius, great work. Thanks for

Our battery was under the hood on our '21 limited model. i ran the wire through the interior under the plastic trims on the driver side and through the top part of the grommet under the steering wheel at the back part of the dash for the steering shaft (not to interfere with the movement of that). Then straight to the battery and re siliconed the hole afterwards. I'm sure there is power at the rear of the vehicle somewhere like cig. lighter or something but we just did the battery to be safe. The kit wont work until you connect a 12V source.
You really don't want to use any other power source than the battery. Having the connection made directly to the battery isolates the vehicle's electrical system from any short circuits that might happen in the trailer wiring.

very helpful. have a RAV4 Limited which has the subwoofer in the driver's side compartment which makes mounting the control module a little more difficult but got it done. Thanks
We're glad to hear that you got the install completed!

What if the battery under the hood??
You'll need to route the wire under the vehicle up to the engine compartment. Here's an article with more info about that...
