Great video Ryan! I agree with all your points (bang-on in fact, especially about Vladar!), but maybe I would add one or two more. Huska + Buy-In. I think Huska has implemented a style of game and held players accountable to playing that style (which relates to my next point). I expected the Flames defensively this season to involve a long series of the "comedy of errors on ice show" most nights given both the sheer turnover om defence, as well as the age and relative inexperience of most of them. Instead, they have been almost every night. Breakdowns always happen, but defensively, this does not appear to be a bunch of chickens with their heads cut-off, at all. Bahl has been a revelation, and as you stated, Pachal has consistently been very good on that 3rd pair. The other point I would make is culture. I think it has taken a combined effort from Conroy, Huska and the coaching staff as well as the vets on the team. I have only see this level of buy-in in just two seasons out of the past 10 - the 2014-15 season when that team just out-worked everyone on a nightly basis, and the 2nd year of Sutter's last tenure when that team really looked the part of a contender (until things fell apart in the 2nd round). This is only the third season where it looks like everyone is pulling together and trying to keep up the effort shift-to-shift. They seem to win a lot of 50/50 pucks, and are relentless on the forecheck and the backcheck. Whenever they let their foot off the gas, it seems things blow up in their faces, but to their credit, this team has been a joy to watch in terms of their compete. I would describe this team as a 'high compete' team that other teams dislike to play against. Not scary physical, but beating the Flames will take an honest effort from the opposing teams. Great work Ryan! I always enjoy your insights!
4 reasons Flames are succeeding!! 1. Flames organization as a whole from Conroy to Huska to the scouts to the people who scrub the toilets.. 2. Dustin Wolf!! He's the real deal and proved size doesn't matter between the pipes. 3. Huberdeau!! This guy watched his old team hoist the cup and it was a huge weight off his shoulders he isn't thinking about it anymore it's done and he has found his game and though his contract is still high it's alot more respectable 4. The veterans and youth!! People don't know how much Zary and Coronato look upto Kadri and Weegar and Anderson and Coleman and Backlund!! These guys have all blended great and it shows!! My 4 wild card players Vladar, Lomberg,Panchal and Bahl these 4 are huge to our success there character is contagious and there mix of hard work consistently helps pick up other players who may be having an off day and it's because of this the balance is the reason we are knocking on the door of playoffs!! I've personally scouted some players eligible for 2025 NHL draft and im okay with Flames pushing for playoffs but I'm also okay if they move some players to keep building draft capital and keep building a monster.. In Conroy I trust and I will lastly say Calgary absolutely smashed the 2024 draft we have some real gamers on the way!!!
Agree that goaltending and 5 on 5 is why Calgary is where it is. Interesting to think that if they fixed the power play, they'd be in a better playoff position. I think there are still trades to make that make sense for a rebuilding team, like moving andersson
I think one of the biggest reasons the Flames are where they are at this point is because they are is because of their newfound identity. For years we've had no identity. This year's we've been much harder to play against, especially at home. Teams weren't expecting this. Nobody was expecting this.
Best time to trade Anderssen for Cozens straight up. Get below bottom 10 so Montreal doesn’t make us look like buffoons. Maybe Coleman with a draft pick for Byram.
I'll dig into this, but in terms of raw PK time each guy has dealt with, it's about even (30 seconds different). The Flames have given up more PK goals with Vladar (19) than Wolf (16), though. Oddly, the Flames get way more PP time with Wolf in net than Vladar, though (11 more minutes).
@@cwmedia_cn I think it has to do with Wolf's ability to hold the puck and get a face off when the guys are gassed. Vladar has more pucks that rebound and it feels like it results in longer shifts.
The coaching and support staff don't get enough credit

I wonder how many penalties each goalie had to deal with. I suspect they have been shorthanded more often with Vladar in net.

@@ryanpikeFN Quite a few people pointed out that the team plays better in front of Wolf.
