Looking good guys... I have been sick as a dog (bacterial pneumonia) but I am enjoying following along... You have a beautiful family, and I am sure you guys are gonna be thrilled when the dream home is done....
Great job guys. Such an awesome family. The children all work so hard and with great attitudes. I chuckled toward the end where you could hear the girls down in the woods running the chain saw while you were working on the beam. That is wonderful.
Hi Martin and Julie So far watched 8 of your videos great quality video, I like the way your two grown up girls and your young Son are so involved with the build taking on the hard graft not forgetting your talented wife Julie. It’s hard work for you all but with all that enthusiasm going into this build the end results will give you a great home for you and your family well into the future.
I love your channel. You guys work like pros. I know you don't have some of the answers, but when you get them, we'll all be watching for lessons and refresher courses...Sill seal is to keep the air out, plus termites and bugs. If you want you can "wet set" the beam piers into the concrete forms in the future. I forget how long the concrete guys wait after the pour to do the "wet set."
A tip for the next guy. Design in a crawlspace access that can get very large men and materials in and out. Also plan how to close it up so water and critters can't get in. Crawlspace need a scheduled amount of ventilation. So many square feet for so much area.
You guys are doing great! Just an FYI, your beam will be stronger if you laminate your beam with the 1/2” ply on one side instead of the middle... don’t get me wrong I did it for years the way you are doing it until about 15 years ago, and then building codes changed. I have seen proof however that the plywood on the outside is better. Also your center piers have no seismic die downs whatsoever. I would recommend adding a strap at each of the three piers that bolts to your footing and nails to the post and on up to your 10x beam. Simpson makes a threaded concrete bolt that you pre drill into the concrete as well as a metal strap for just these scenarios that can usually be found at your local hardware or lumber store. You guys really are doing a great job though, so keep up the good work!
If all your bolts are straight run a string line alongside or over the top of them and measure to the side and measuring between each one and you know exactly where everyone goes
We are here in Indonesia people rarely build their own house, instead hire people to work it.. Gladly now I have my own house, and little by little fix it and it's a lot of fun..
I would love to see how you powered your house with solar energy! :) I dream of doing what you are doing! Do you plan on raising animals and or have a garden or hothouse also?
@@MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving Having once built a similar foundation in a cold climate (I used 4 courses of block) one thing I wished I had put in the crawl space was a 100-200 gallon water container. One winter well head frooze for six weeks. I had to haul from neighbors. Had two kids in diapers at the time : ) And one really dumb and thirsty llama.... Man, you are really level and square and bolted down. The rest is easy (or at least fixable)... another nice video.
I have some books on construction but I am mechanically inclined and have paid attention to other houses being built. When I was Seths age I helped my dad build our house. Although I didn’t help very much.
Looking good! So who is the “they” that say to put that pink stuff down? I’m not questioning the methodology; I’d like to know what you are following for instructions and advice as y’all build this. Very interesting.
I’ll try to share of the books that were using in one of our future videos. I think we have three main books that were using each one has its pluses and minuses.
Hi Martin. I know it's been a year plus since this video so I don't know if you'll see this.. Spokane native here.. Just curious.. Do you have a humidity monitor in your vented crawl space.. My dream is to buy some off-grid property near Priest Lake and do something similar with a crawl space. Sealed vs. non-sealed c.p. is something I am thinking about and mold issues.. Being off-grid makes it more challenging for crawl space fans and and such. One idea going down the youtube worm hole is a 12v system that has a humidity monitor on the exterior and interior and makes adjustments for fan in or fan out for moisture. I did mold abatement in a prior life, but if the humidity is not an issue in N Idaho it may be more work than it is worth. Enjoy your vid's..Keeping it real..

Trying to watch the beginning of your build what a nice family
Good Simple Living is an amazing channel!
the pink vapor barrier atop the stem-wall will extend the life of the lumber by keeping it dry
If I have a hectic day I watch your videos. Thanks You guys are great!

Congratulations, what a beautiful family !!!
Perfection.

Go man go! Nice job friends!
Thanks so much. We need to have this dried in by winter.
Great video!

A big Kudos to your Wife and Kids for the impressive work they contribute to the homestead. Modern Little house in the big woods. Land Sakes Martin!
Thank you. They are very big help and I’m quite capable of doing all types of work.
WOW! Did I sound prideful. Julie just pointed out my comment. We had a good laugh. I meant THEY are quite capable of doing all types of work.
I figured you had a typo. Lots of responses to different comments, a typo will come around from time to time.
It's a bit funny how invested I am in your homestead build.. LOL. Loving it !!
I’m glad you are enjoying it. Your positive comments mean a lot to us. Thank you.
The whole family is doing a amazing job bless you
You guys are a Awsome family !!! God bless you guys and you have a great homestead !!!
Great progress guys! You are making good progress to beat winter!
Thank you. I hope we do make it. I think we will. However every same everything seems to take longer then I see it well or think it well.
Solar system video please, great work.
pretty systematic work. To the plan and good materials used.

Yes, please make a video about your solar setup.
OK maybe I’ll make it next week or the following week.

Thanks for the tips. I’ll look in to it. Thanks for the compliments.
Ternyata pak martin dan family tukang profesional
Really, Such an inspiration. Good luck with the build.
Thank you. I’m glad you like it.
That would be great to see more of your solar system . Thanks

Exciting good job Gain , that's how I would of done things
By all means, a solar video of what you did, why you did it and what you would have done differently. What does the future hold?
You got it. I’ll try to make the video next week or the following week.
Seth playing with Tux is so cute..
We are here in Indonesia people rarely build their own house, instead hire people to work it..
Gladly now I have my own house, and little by little fix it and it's a lot of fun..
60 degrees fahrenheit?? Wow it means 15,5 celsius, dingin sekali pak martin 😁😁👍
The barrier between the sil plate and the concrete is to keep the wood from soaking up moisture from the concrete.
Just getting started watching your build. Looks great so far! Did you guys consider an encapsulated crawl space?
I commented about lake in your newest video.. Haven't seen this LOL..😁
any reason youo didn't use sono tubes for piers?
I would love to see how you powered your house with solar energy! :) I dream of doing what you are doing! Do you plan on raising animals and or have a garden or hothouse also?
Love your work sir where do you get your information and plans for this project thanks
Is the lake beside the road close to your house?
Maybe put a crawlspace access with some vents? Have air flow in there ?
They arw putting a trap door to crawlspace their laundry room. I believe he mentioned the space will be vented between floor joists.
Will cut vents in the Rim joist and there will be a trap door in the laundry room.

macing tinggal kenangan ya pak martin
I just subscribed good deal.
Are you using a step by step book for the build or did you know how to build a house already?
I have some books on construction but I am mechanically inclined and have paid attention to other houses being built. When I was Seths age I helped my dad build our house. Although I didn’t help very much.
Sir what are you making and some plans?
WE are making a House. We plan to live in it.
@@MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving Sir, can I ask? About the father's daughter named Sarah Jhonson?
I am Aditya living in Indonesia ...
Sir?
Carvingcanuck: Keep in mind that electric saws are usually made for right handed people. Jules seems to struggle a bit. Good job guys.
The barrier is to keep water from wicking from the concrete in to the wood.

Thank you, sir! I interested on your option on what books are best.
The headline photo sure looks like Kayla Morton the drag racer in No Prep. You have a twin sister. 🤔
Waahh..pak martin ni boleh bikin swiming pool,..huhuhu,..
It could be a swimming pool that would be awesome. But it wouldn’t keep us very warm in the winter time.
I am the first to watch this video👍✋

Hey Martin, is your Dad in any of the videos?
Yes. The videos from June.
Why didn’t you build beam on front wall then all you had to do is stand up and lid over to center.
No reason. Just the way we did it.
Tip : Drills wont drill in reverse gear

Hi
This madam is very strong must stand for election
Goal was to build beam. Money shot not included, ends with weird frolicking in stream.
What is the money shot?
Marty Drill a bigger hole this way you have some wiggle room..
Anak anak tidak sekolah pak martin
They are on summer vacation.
