I still want the characters to have their classic designs (Think Joe Shuster, Curt Swan, John Byrne, Alex Ross and Gary Frank kind of designs for the Superman Cast...), is that wrong?!. I am a gay, brown, Mexican leftist, about as woke as it gets, BUT I WANT THE DESIGNS I FELL IN LOVE WITH (Though Superman's face looks kinda like Christopher Reeve's, but less angular and more oval, which is wrong, like it should be more squared or rectangular, and WHERE IS THE CLASSIC HAIRSTYLE???), I know I have a para-social relationship with them , but that's the way it is, my favorite characters are like my loved ones, and they have a specific physical appearance. Also I hate what they did to the "S" /House of El shield on Superman's chest, WHY CAN'T THEY DO THE CLASSIC LOGO?!. English ain't my first language, so sorry about my grammar.

Ironically the "glasses disguise" is probably one of the most realistic aspects of the superman mythos but people think it is the least realistic. There have been articles written about how it's actually surprisingly realistic. Heck I knew someone in college who wore glasses all the time and whenever I saw them with their glasses off I was kind of thrown by how different they looked. Additionally it's not JUST glasses. It's the changes in voice and body language that occur. I always view the glasses disguise as a magic trick. Once you know the answer its obvious and you kick yourself for being so stupid but when you don't know the truth then you can't comprehend how a trick is done and question your perceptions of reality.

There's the scene from one of the Christopher Reeves movies that demonstrates this to an uncanny degree.
And honestly, he doesn't even need the glasses. It's like when people run into famous people IRL-the first response is almost always, "whoa that person looks a lot like [celebrity]" and not "that person _is_ [celebrity]"

Turns out they don't know their dank DC fluff as well as they think they do, like all the people who clearly only know of The Brain and Monsieur Mallah from one arc in Teen Titans Animated and don't know they've been a bizarre gay romance between a brain-in-a-jar and his hyper intelligent gorilla assistant since their debut roles in the original 1960's Doom Patrol

Something I really loved about Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker is that they put a lot of focus on him not just saving people but really trying to take care of them. ASM2, flawed as it is, really did a good job of making him out to be this fundamentally compassionate guy who would check on people to make sure they were okay after saving them or trying to talk a villain down rather than just attacking them outright. His films, even though he's only had three in the past 20 years, fail at the box office because the movies he's been a part of are uninspired. Brandon's Superman was great but they didn't give him enough to do. Cavill could've been great but Snyder didn't let him feel like Superman until his Justice League movie, and even then, he paled in comparison to his comic counterpart. Thank you for continuing to stand up for the concept of superheroes who are actually good people. It's always weirded me out a bit when people assume that "real" heroes would be selfish and cruel.
One of my strongest childhood memories is the 1994 Northridge earthquake in California, which was centered near the home of my rather fragile grandparents. It took my family a couple of days to make it to that house because the roads were in such a state, but when we arrived, we discovered that everyone in their neighborhood had banded together to help one another out however they could, and they'd made sure that the old folks got help from whoever was able-bodied and uninjured. Half of those people didn't even have a common language with the other half (lots of monolingual English and Spanish speakers), but they basically played neighborhood-wide charades because they saw other humans in trouble. Obviously my parents and siblings and I pitched in when we arrived, but it made a profound impact on me to see what had already been done. And it turns out this happens a LOT in disasters! Fires, floods, blackouts, earthquakes, all of it. Even when covid hit, while there were lots of people who turned into jerks as time went on, there were still people who kept on sharing food and checking on their neighbors and distributing masks.
Why WOULDN’T the people who choose to be superheroes include the kind of people who'd get a cat out of a tree? Or help an old lady after an earthquake? Or drop off groceries for a neighbor who lost their job? Sure, some people would put on the tights for fame or attention or money or power, but some of them would just want to help. I think it's disingenuous to assume otherwise.
So yeah, color me Team Superman Is Nice, Actually. And I'm glad to have someone as nice as you, Scott, for a teammate. :)

The only thing I’m not sure about yet is this iteration of Deathstroke. As a kid who grew up with the Teen Titans cartoon, I have yet to find an animated adaptation of Slade Wilson I like more. I do hope this impresses me.
Otherwise, I adore this more youthful take on Clark, Lois, and Jimmy. More than that, SOMETHING THAT SPOTLIGHTS JIMMY AT ALL. The fact that he’s more than just a third wheel, and the fact that he has as much chemistry with Lois as Clark does shows how much care they put into him. @@marcusclark1339 I have my concerns about the show as well
-Lois is more childish then usual and hangs out with kids
-It won't let red heads be red heads so they're turning Jimmy black for the 3rd or 4th time
-Its designs are near identical to that She-ra reboot with some owl house references. Like you said, very soft designs.
-They seem to be trying to make Clark Kent more like aged-up Jon Kent (thankfully still straight), both too much of klutz this old and even has that blue lightning energy
HOWEVER, while these are all red flags, nothing has pushed it over the edge into truly bad yet.
Its no DCAU, we won't see writing that good for a very long time, but it could still be a passable version.
The Zack Snyder-verse was always too gritty, and the New 52 animated movies were hit and miss. Jason O'Mara as Batman was given a horrible script, them asking him to do emotionless responses and grunting in annoyance, and New 52 Superman is pretty boring until his death scene or his scene saving Raven.
If they are able to control themselves to not make things too floofy, I can understand wanting to make Clark feel like a light hearted farmboy who wants to do good again.
I'm reserving my judgement until more episodes come out.

That part about the shift from heroes helping to just heroes fighting villains is exactly why I love Mumen Rider from One Punch Man. He’s literally just a normal guy in a series where literal aliens and humans with insane powers exist, all he has to stand out is the fact he’s a pretty good bike rider, but he’s the one character I would truly consider an actual hero.
Even Saitama, as hilarious and engaging as he is to watch, is mostly just trying to go about his day to day life alongside his quest to find a foe who can withstand more than one punch. He does save people yes, but it’s mostly just if they’re in his immediate range of attention.
Mumen Rider consistently goes out of his way to check in on people, no matter how menial their woes, and always does his best to make sure they’re safe and happy. Even if he’s beaten down, or at risk of death from some villains, he keeps getting back up and prioritises the safety of those around him first and foremost, not the actual fighting.
He’s just this unabashedly kind person doing his best in a world that normally forces one into a state of apathy, and I strive to be more like him irl (not so much pretending to be a hero, rather being kind and uplifting to those around me)

This harkens back to the first Christopher Reeves Superman movie. It is bright, flashy, sometimes just a touch silly. But it was sincere and that deepens all the rest. This animation is doing that. The artwork and characters are bright, clean, fun. In fact, it’s light enough that it puts the audience off balance and shales up what we “know” about Superman, Lois and all the rest. There is depth hidden in that simplicity. Also, it’s refreshing to have a Superman who is still figuring things out; he doesn’t know much more than Lois, Jimmy or everyone else. The adventures are fun, chemistry between the main characters is superb. And there’s something sinister brewing just beneath the surface we’ve only gotten hints about.

I think the fact that Superman cleans up the collateral damage caused by the villain is amazing. While I have other problems with the movie...a lot of them in fact, I would have probably forgiven basically all of them in MoS if after Clark kills Zod (Not that I want THAT to happen) if he had just helped clean up the rubble in the city. Like maybe him rebuilding would have been too cartoony and campy for Snyder, but just clean up. Just taking the time to clean up what was essentially his own mess. Instead it just felt like metropolis, Supermans city for nearly a century, had been destroyed the first time he goes there.
So seeing MAwS Clark cleaning up after the fight just makes me happy.

This series takes the Man out of of Superman the same way 1998 Godzilla took out God (sic Ryuhei Kitamura). And for the same, awful reasons, only even more awful this audience actually WANTS it.
For comparison, Invincble crashes head first into the impossibility its premise to create a pretty compelling narative, dare I say deconstruction in year of our lord 2023. This Superman is all about GETTING to not do that.
I'm surprised to find out they invetned a more perfect defintion of "Anti-Hero", than the PREVIOUS one. And this Superman is that. Every animated version if He-Man, is a better "Superman" than what we see here. EVERY version. That universe doesn't dodge out of the way when any level of basic introspection on what heroism NEEDS, is put on the table. Superman’s parents knew the planet was about to be destroyed so sent him to earth. Superman gets his powers from the sun, and his only weakness is kryptonite. Superman shows up and I just felt at that moment "everything's going to be alright now" and it hit me, that's what Superman should be, the hero that makes you feel "everything's going to be alright now" because not only you know that he's powerful enough to finish the fight, but also, you know that he's the one that's going to do the right thing, he's the one that's not going to let his anger win or let his ego drive him to make the wrong choice. Superman is "boring" in a way we need things to be boring sometimes, by being predictably good and saving the day.

The trunks aren’t what matter, per se, but letting him be goofily good enough to wear them that matters.
Snyder’s Supes didn’t have trunks because Snyder is an edgy teenager. Superman is not edgy. Superman is impossibly kind.
SUPERMAN SHOULD ALWAYS FACE A MAGICAL GIRL TRANSFORMATION

Im reminded of the fairly recent Man of Tomorrow comics. I really enjoyed it, shows all Supermans sides as he saves a lot of people, including villains, and often in smart ways. Lois is solid and not just a damsel, even when she is she doesnt just hang around waiting. It also has one of my favourite moments in any Superman comic, and what hooked me on this series, where you see a disheveled Clark slumped in his seat holding a bottle, and Lois comes in and goes 'Uh-oh, youre hitting the pop. What happened?'
(Oh, I should add, this isnt just funny. They talk, genuinely support each other, and she gets a smile out of him before he shoots back in to action.)

One of my favorite comics is still a Spider-man story from about a decade ago. A minor villain gets out of prison and he's just walking down an alley contemplating doing crime again because cons don't get shit once they get out. And there's a brief shadow cast that looks like Spidey, but when the villain turns it's just Pete. Pete talks to the guy. Listens to his problems. Pete says he knows this guy! He did some crazy good tech. Why don't you come for me, Peter Parker at my giant fancy well paying science lab?? Because punching bad guys doesn't mean much if there isn't amnesty and respect for those who want to leave it behind.

The writing is good, the animation is decent, the voice acting and characterization (for the personas created for these specific characters) is spot-on. I love that Superman is the Firefighter idea, not the Cop. A solid 8 out of 10, but I do have some problems with the show as shown below, preventing it from getting a 10/10.
    1. The idea that after, what, 10 years or so with his powers, Clark still can't put on his shoes without tearing them in half in the first episode (obviously this doesn't happen now as he's getting the hang of his powers, but wait, why did it take putting on the cape to get him used to putting on shoes?)
    2. I think they are rushing the show, given that both Jimmy and Lois already know he's Superman and Lois and Clark are already getting into a romantic relationship and we're only a handful of episodes in. A better reveal is as they're getting the promotions they deserve, Clark hears an emergency and starts stumbling for an excuse, Jimmy then jumping in to cover for him. A momentary look in each other's eyes alone telling us all we need to know, "Clark, I know and I got your back." Season two opener we get Jimmy with the whole doorknob story to Clark. Then the end of the second season Lois finds out after having decided that she likes Clark more than Superman (does not have to be a love triangle aspect).
And lets be honest, if you rush the story to this extent, and already reveal that Sam Lane is "the man behind the curtain" out to take out Superman, at this rate to be stopped at the end of the fist season as well... you're going to hit burnout. See, the more they rush the first season, the less content they'll have for the rest of the series, plus they have to keep up that pace to keep it working. Pretty soon we're going to hit the character growth limit and the stories will just be rushed plot, shoving the characters into situations that their character growth would have already prevented from happening, stagnating their growth, or they'll try to solve this by using repetitive filler, all of which gets old fast.
    3. Mister Mxyzptlk should have been more magic than manga.
But again, still a solid 8/10 despite this.

I feel like something that felt very refreshing was that Clark was actually a character and not a mask that superman wears. So Imma go on a Jimmy rant. I love Jimmy in this show. And I especially love his relationship with Clark and Lois. It feels like, for years, Jimmy has been a side character that nobody knows what to do with. They put him in out of some sense of obligation, but they either play it straight, making him the only comic relief in an other wise serious show, or they turn him into a totally different character who takes pictures sometimes. This Jimmy is a perfect blend of old and new. I love how his conspiracy stuff jives with Lois. Lois and Jimmy have always come off as a Kim Possible/Ron Stoppable dynamic to me. But Kim and Ron are best friends. Lois and Jimmy are coworkers first and foremost. And they work at a newspaper. What’s compelling them to work together besides Lois being able to drag Jimmy along by the ear? So I like that Jimmy *wants* to join Lois on her hijinks while Clark is more of the straight man. The dynamic just makes more sense.
I’ll also mention that I adore the recap pictures at the end. They’re not just image stills from the episode, they are pictures that logically consider how Jimmy would have taken them. And it’s not just Jimmy’s current camera roll. The second episode includes what I assume to be a picture of Jimmy meeting Clark’s family for the first time. And it’s just so wholesome. I adore all of it.

For all intents and purposes, a copy is as real as the original to outsiders. If I died today and a perfect copy replaced me, memories and all, my family wouldn’t know the difference. The only person who experiences their own existence is themselves, so from the outside looking in, the fact that the original died doesn’t really change the fact that “Jor-El” is alive.

This video made me realize I misunderstood the character of Superman. I have been a lifelong Batman fan, and I love the complexity of his stories. I always hated Superman because he only has 3 weaknesses that you can exploit, kryptonite to attack him, going after his family/lover/allies, and threatening humanity as a whole. I never saw him as a three dimensional character because he's so plain, but I think that's the appeal. He's just a good dude who wants to use his power to help people, and that is a noble cause. I think the trend of making Superman evil really cheapens the character. Thanks for changing my mind

I like the fact this show is on Adult Swim because it subverts our expectations, making the show even better. I think a lot of people watched it thinking it was going to be another dark and gritty superhero series like Invincible or Homelander, but instead they got treated to a delightful surprised of silly yet heartfelt dramedy.
I think a lot of people need that. Sometimes I just want a break from all the seriousness and explicitness that "adult" shows dish out and just want to experience something giddy and lighthearted. I think this show awakened that desire in a lot of adults, a desire many of us didn't even realize we have until it was tapped. Just because we're adults doesn't mean we can't indulge in "silly" fantasies like crushes and cute romance. This show seems to appeal to both women and men in that regard, something you don't see much of in modern television.

Watching this feels like when I watched Superman: The Animated Series as a kid. It's wonderful and bright and optimistic. But it also feels like a lot of modern takes inspired by Max Landis' Kryptonian Epic if you've listened to any of that.
Superman is a GOOD PERSON trying to help people (though I'd argue this aspect of him is ramped up further from TAS, which is NOT a bad thing). We get to see him going out of his way TO help people, talking to rescue teams, repairing damage, clearing debris in SECONDS, it's wonderful.
Many members of the Rogue's Gallery are the result of Kryptonian Technology (In Kryptonian Epic it's mostly gene splicing to try and replicate Superman's powers using Kryptonite and stolen Tech, while in MAwS it looks like it's straight up Kryptonian Technology being used to create weapons/suits). Some may balk at that, but I think it makes more sense than having a bunch of mutants running around.
The main trio are clearly the characters we love, but less mature which, hey, we're at the beginning of the series, so we can look forward to their growth and evolution, and I am HERE for it.

I see a lot of parallels between the characterisation of Superman in the 1978 film and in MAWS. For instance, when Lex had Superman trapped at the end of the movie, Miss Teschmacher freed him if he promised to save her mother first, because "Superman always keeps his promises". She really believes that if he gives his word, he'll follow through - and he does! He does, even at the cost of Lois also being in danger, and then dying. Though, of course, he saves her anyway.
Only with a sincere, honest-to-goodness Big Blue Boy Scout Superman could you actually pull this off.
