FENDERS / Custom Copper Accents / Hood Cable - 1956 VW BEETLE - 168
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- I realized that I failed to install Eleanore's proper VW Beetle hood cable tube for a 1956 VW Beetle after I grafted on a different front end... this was especially important because its supposed to be welded to the body, before Earl would have painted it last year. Since this didn't happen, I decided I should add some copper accents to the trunk area instead. Now this is something nice, I think! Also, I poured a generous "CREATIVITY JUICE" and decided I wanted to see what the VW Beetle wider fiberglass fenders looked like on Eleanore! So I started by mounting the front ones on there temporarily! She looks good!

Psssssssss..... Haha! More copper fun times to come!
Duckman has found his word of the week...PATINA !!
That's MY word of the week? lol
I appreciate your appreciation for the real Gone in 60 Seconds! 👍
It's appreciated, just not part of my videos nor my life until people bring it here. LoL!
You are a lucky man in lots off ways good luck Duck Man
This wasn't luck, my friend! This was 6 years of hard work and determination! Thanks so much!
Triple E looks hawt with dem front fenders on 😍🔥
Eleanore is looking sweet .Two thumbs up .
Thanks so much Tom!
She looks good already!!! Even without the rear fenders on
Oh man! Miss Eleanore (Triple-E) is one pretty girl! Mmmm hmm! Thanks so much!
Good idea with the magnets, I use them on headliners, its basically magic! 🤣🤣🤣👍
LoL! Scientists view magnetism as magic, too.... nobody really knows what it is... but we do know how to use it!
just seeing you work on Eleanore again really brings back memories of the older videos
There are lots of them! That's for sure! LoL! Might be my longest running series as far as video numbers.
Elenore is looking absolutely awesome bro!!!!
A dream to come true! Thanks so much!
@@DuckmanCycles I totally understand.
Duckman , you have done an excellent job on triple E. Best thing you said is taking your time to make it right. Love your videos.
Thanks so much my friend! Huge appreciation that you've been waatching!
Perfect fit with the copper.
Fenders looks phenomenal!
I think so! I did a dumb, so I made it a good! But those fenders! OMG! Thanks man! Haha!
The copper looks great and so does triple E. Nothing beats standing back and having a drink while admiring your car. I usually have a beer though 🍺
Beer was the blood of the initial build, but about halfway through I switched over to stuff a little stronger..... lol Thanks much my friend!
Been a long time coming duck man it can take a lot longer but there's a price for perfection love the way she's coming out so far been there from the beginning to the end you just can't rush it she going to be a awesome ride my friend
Yeah man, she's gotta be done right! I'm so excited all over again after seeing those fenders on!
That car looks hot with them fenders on it. I can't wait to see you finish it.
Thank you John! She really does! I am so happy with the results so far!
As much as I love the color of copper, I would polish that tube, and hit it with a coat of clear gloss lacquer, even if the tube won't be seen unless you're actually looking for it. The nice look of bright shiny copper also compliments the color of the paint. Where you said you're going to 3D print something to hold the tube where you drilled the hole, a rubber grommet will work just the same, AND it won't require additional holes to be drilled out for mounting screws. You said how much you liked how the front fenders really defined the look of the car, and I agree with you, but I think it's more the combination of the fenders, and the chopped top that define the look. This car really looks great!!!
You can polish your own tube all you want when you build your own car! Or you can just polish your tube looking at mine!

Magnificent paint job and custom job Duckman no one ruffles your feathers but who payed the BILL pun
Yeah the pain turned out nice and pretty, the metal is all nice and sealed up! Thanks so much!
pretty fair job there dude and dudette, well done.
Thanks Mark! 😁👍🦆💩
Boy duckman she's looks amazing. Absolutely love the copper and the diamond green. Fantastic work to you, Earl and his guys👍👍
Thanks so much Brad! I am very pleased! Things are coming along nicely, slowly, but that's fine with me!
Slow is good doing right the first time
@@bradkay1210 LoL yep! Apparently some people commenting around here tonight are suggesting that I'm still not doing it right. LoL! Thanks man, I'll get it right and its gonna be good for a long time!
Lol let's see them build a car from scratch. Lol love whiching your videos man they been helping me a lot
@@bradkay1210 LoL! It wasn't completely scratch, I didn't mine my own iron ore, refine it, and roll out my own steel panels..... but close enough! As you said, lets see them try! Haha! Thanks man!
Wow she’s beautiful with those fenders on! Loving the progress!
Thank you! I even impressed myself! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I can’t believe you called it a lever. Especially knowing your fondness of pulling knobs.
I've been known to waggle a lever, or dingle some balls
First time watching I like EEE and love the old school Porsche wheels on it definitely gives it a sweet look
Thanks for joining us, John! Those wheels were a great pick, and they fit nicely over all the Porsche brake and suspension parts that were used! Not sure it they will stay, but they are wheels, I can always bolt them back on if I change my mind again! 😁👍🦆💩
Then fenders are awesome, the stance is phenomenal
Thanks Dean! I'm glad the ride height is adjustable.... in the video it was too low to even roll. LoL!
Good work, Duckman.
Thank you! Very happy with all results!
Wow the front fenders make it look sweet love the look.
Thank you so much, she’s coming together! It’s so exciting!
Good to see Eleanor out and it looks real real good with the fenders on it and I like it and yeah the it does clash with the paint job so hope to see more work on Eleanore more
Thanks, but you are the first to comment about a famous Mustang and my Beetle in the same comment! LoL!
Thank you so much for the comment, but you have to understand that I do not own the rights to the Ford Mustang you are referencing. This happens so often now that I had to make this an automated canned response to handle the large amount of comments. I must tell you this not because I am jerk, but to protect my own rights. If I do not make corrections it demonstrates that I don't care, or may go as far as to suggest that I allow my car to be referenced by someone else's copyrights. That would open me up to scrutiny, and potentially can be used against me legally. My car is not a Mustang, nor do I ever suggest that it is a Mustang, it cannot be confused with a Mustang, it is not compared to a Mustang, and is not even the same color as a famous Mustang. My VW Beetle and the famous Mustang are not the same at all and do not even have the same name. My Beetle is also referred to as Triple-E, so if "Eleanore" does not have 3 E's then you are talking about a car that is not mine. Yeah don’t rush fixing the bug take ur time 👍🏻😁
Thank you my friend!
That copper looks really good 👍
Thank you! I think it was a good choice, and despite being required due to a failure, I made it a win!
Bugs coming along great, paint looks amazing...nice job
Thanks very much! More updates coming soon!
I couldn`t have something that nice I would worry myself to death.
Oh man.... and worry I do! LoL!
Nothing wrong with taking your time. The copper looks great and it will be better to go the distance, like you said. I do things similarly. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Thomas! One step at a time, as they say.... with lots of preperation for each step!
Wow I love this Porsche rims on there that looks great I never thought of that kudos brah
Thank you! I am still not sure if they are to be permanent. But I can always unbolt them and use something ele and even put them back later, right? 😁👍🦆💩
I like the copper pipe! Looks cool and retro 🤘🏽😊
Thank you! A little touch of steam punk, eh? Hehe!
That lock is very clever. What happened at least in Brazil with the vehicles. The owner puts a lot of grease in it, as the cable lasts many years this grease accumulates dirt and failure. Cars like the vw Brasilia there is no access to the trunk is a big problem. In my vw Brasilia I put another hidden cable and in case one fails and the lock does not open I can still pull it and open the trunk.
Thanks for the comment! The latch should fail to OPEN if the cable breaks, unless something else is jammed or not set up correctly! I think we'll be fine! Thanks so much!
There are two things I see people are forgetting.
A ) This is “ Duckys “ car. He can do whatever he wants to it.
2 ) “ A “ takes care of any questions or comments.
So far, I have learned many things. Fixing problems can become very creative. Not sure I liked the colour when I first saw it, but out in the sun ? Keep doing what you are doing. I will be watching for your next mistake.
When I first saw the color in Earl's shop under the artificial lights (some were a little pink, and some were slightly blue, not true whites!) I was a little surprised, something didn't look right.... but as soon as I saw it in daylight, it really went more to what I was expecting! I love it!
Hello everytime I see bee she make me smile. Even if iam having a bad day.she is beautiful lady.
Thanks, but I sure hope you like all the hard work I put into this project
Thank you !
Thanks for the comment!
The car looks great a guy had a VW that had the same angel chop on it the car was done by California customs here in Louisiana it was painted in candy colors yellow with flames it was in the world of wheels car show. Car looked great and changed hands a few times and ended up all apart and disappeared.
I'm sure its not the same, this car wasn't chopped in effect, it was built up from the ground this way. Totally a unique shape here, it would be very hard to copy! Thanks so much man! Maybe that car will turn up someday!
I know it's not the same car but it's the only one I've seen with the same type on chop I love it.
@@richardsmith-qy6vl Thanks man! I'd love to see photos of that one!
LOVING THAT LOOK!!! and yes take your time on EEE lol....i totally understand. :-)
Yes sir! Triple-E! Lets see who messes that one up now! We can make fun of them lol!
How about using a a bicycle or motorcycle cable inside the copper tube to keep the wear inside the tube from happening? Just a thought.
Similar had been suggested in the video, but the larger diameter tube is what allows that stiff wire to move like it does.
I caught a glimpse of an Oval VW Just east of Concord NH side the road. It looked like it was that same color. It was stock looking and looked good at 50 MPH going by! BTW don't be putting' no East German Commie parts on Eleanore Duck man. It's un 'merican or I might have to become a Morpar Lovin Hater. Heh Heh 🤣🤣
ROTFL! Hahaha! Gotta add some more things that are period... and perhaps if Germany did win the war, they may have used similar things. We'll see if I can even make it work the way I want anyway, lol! If not, then no! There will be more videos to follow of course! Thanks man!
I love your show
Thank you, Darlene! I really appreciate that!
Slightly longer fender bolts, some nice looking P clips and a lock nut. The tube runs right beside every bolt already. Easy fix and non offensive in the looks department. You can get vintage style guages with GPS speedometer too. Would save on that extra cable run.
Or just use a little glue and go no clips at all similar to the welds that VW used OEM and as I suggested in the video! The speedo cable worked for 66 years, and looks nice and original, despite my color choice, and is a lot cheaper. Would save on the extra money to spend on a new speedometer.
Love the color of eleonare
She is beautiful indeed, thank you!
Looks so good with the wings fitted. One reason I'm waiting to have the car painted is so I don't destroy the paint doing other stupid things lol.
Yeah... things like fitting an engine in a Karmann Ghia first before paint..... lol! Thanks man!
@@DuckmanCycles I may have to copy your coper line idea also for my bonnet pull as the late plastic glovebox setup was badly flawed in my experience.
@@GT.Bugger No! Don't do it! It's not gonna work right! LoL! That's a lot of the goofy comments I've been getting today.... lol! Or a whole lot of DO IT MY WAY stuff as always!
Perfection takes time
Mediocrity is instant
Maybe Adel clamps or similar on the fender bolt inside threads to secure copper tubing?
Thanks much! What's wrong with glue and no visible clips? VW never used clips there.
@@DuckmanCycles Just a suggestion to a moment in the vid. Your vision will supply a solution 👍👍👍
I can make it look better than a bunch of clips :-)

@@ineverhadthemoney7857 Thanks! It's always fun! :-D
We use that type of copper (10mm) for heating radiators in the uk in our houses it does bend quite easily without tools and without kinking. we also use copper tubing to replace brake lines but that is a lot thinner. Great idea using it on the car though doesnt need paint and wont rust. The worst you will get is it will get dark and go green but it probably won't happen where you live.
You know the hood latch im not 100% sure if you can do copper over it i think you can. So you could probably copper plate it which is dead easy to do
Thanks man! I am considering copper plating it, gotta remove that chromate first, though! It is something I am considering!
@@DuckmanCycles ah i thought it was zinc plating guess i was wrong lol well you live and learn as they say.
ive done some copper plating myself on some tools and other bits i have to nickel plate first or the copper wont stick. my adjustable spanner which is broken doesnt half look cool in a copper colour though. its a wall piece now though as its broken.
@@TotoGuy-Original You thought half right! It probably is zinc, but its chromate coated, that is the "gold-green" color that you see. It needs to come off before any plating will stick to it. Some weak acids will sometimes remove it and not bang up the zinc too badly. I'm trying to find something less aggressive on the zinc though!
...If you're worried about the steel cable chewing through the copper tubing, maybe use nylon twine/rope? If all it needs to do is pull to open the latch, it should work.
Or lots of lube! Thanks man!
The pipecutter has a trangle shaped blad to take out the inner blur
Yep! But its not a worry! Thanks man!
nice job.
Thank you!
No longer Elenore? Named triple E? How about the name Sweet Pea? It's a cute car and needs a cute name, Glenn. Plus the color resembles pea soup and your the Hamhock that's going to drive it. "JOKE!" (I hope you still have a sense of humor). The copper tubing and steel wire is genius! Use what you got and make it work! Great tutor video! I got me a Edgamacation Leson in VW BEATLE replacement repair!🤪 Use zipties to attatch the tubing.(sugetstion)

Looking good duckman ! Could you run a longer fender bolts and attach the copper tube to the threads inside the trunk ?.. just a thought
I could do a lot of things, or I could just glue it and make it invisibly fastened as suggested before!
@@DuckmanCycles do what makes you happy duckman... hope it works out for you
@@rixkafer56 Thanks man, it'll work out if I work for it!
If you want you could polish the tube then clear coat it and install it. As far as the fuel sender, could you not route it along the hood latch tube to the front of the tank then up to its final position?
Or I could leave it to patina as I suggested I wanted in the video. That would be a really peculiar and unusually long route for running the gas tank sender wire, and it would be less hidden.
@@DuckmanCycles true you know Elenore's innards better than I do. I was only operating from what I saw from the video. Also if the patina is your goal, would you stop and seal it at a certain point, or let it continue?
@@Onedadbuilds It''ll stop on its own because in a dry place... and it's not iron rusting. All good!
@@DuckmanCycles I did not know that. I suppose up here in The Great White North that would probably just turn black.
@@Onedadbuilds It may if it were outside the car, but its inside in a dry spot in a car that won't see rain. Should look nice and antique'd
its a funny day//its the color of green pea soup .
Yep, olive colored at an angle or in the shadows!
For speedo, maybe go with an arduino w/ a GPS shield. you could have that run a servo which operates the needle of an original gauge? Would look vintage, but no need for a speedo cable.
Sounds very overkill... lol... especially when cable has worked fine on this car since 1956. However, you'll see more about that in videos soon, I have some ideas.
You can get powerful neodymium magnets out of old computer Hard Disc Drives. Everytime I scrap a HDD I always keep the magnets.
They are the C shaped magnet that top and botton the head driver coils.
I am an IT professional by trade, I am very familiar and have them all over my refrigerator! Hehe!
@@DuckmanCycles So use them then mate! Lol...
I am a security systems engineer and I use then for finding screws/nails and noggins in stud walls.
@@banjax66 Why? They are flat... hard to get off without prying them up. These ones I have work fine. Why is it when I've already demonstrated a better working solution that people always try to make me use something else that doesn't work as well.... when the job is already done?
Duck division Wolf had a duck
Thanks! I have no idea what that is!
I agree black for the latch
Maybe black.... still up in the air!
did u make a video on the top chop? i would like to see lt. tanks

Hey Glennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn,,,,,,,it may be too late but did you think about clear coating the copper tube to prevent any color change
Yep too late... I wanted it patina'd as I said in the video!

Heater tubes are not necessary unless you plan on using the heaters! 😁👍🏻

I didn't, you didn't miss anything! That stuff is to come!
use nylon tube just cut 2 inch off// and use it at both ends of copper at the both ends.. in side off copper tube running // and can be replaced in 10 years , wire will run easy pull
Similar had been suggested in the video, but the larger diameter tube is what allows that stiff wire to move like it does.

something to think about, the galvanic response.

There is clips made out of copper with a rubber coating made for water lines, look into it before you hot glue the line.
Considered, even had them in my had at the hardware store.... too ugly! Also no way to attatch them without more holes or lots more glue. No good!
Put on some nail polish on the exposed metal in the drilled hole, to keep the rust away.
Easy to find a similar color, or just use a transparent one.
And don't forget to polish and wax the copper tubing to keep it shiny.
Great video 👍
I painted the hole with matching paint... why use nail polish? Hehehe! Thanks man! And there's nothing wrong with a little patina on the copper!
Hi Duckman, is there a way you could use some kind of check valve on the cap of the gas tank as a breather so you don't have to drill that SWEEEEEET paint?
Maybe, but the cap is original.... you don't cut those! Nothing wrong with poking a hole in some paint, just make it look nice!
You could paint it black to accent the gas tank,if you change your mind???🤔👍
Paint what? LoL!
@@DuckmanCycles the copper tubing..
I had to ask, as the question was ambiguous.... but I still don't understand. Do people normally paint beautifully colored metal jewelry? I suppose if I wanted to paint it, I could have just installed a steel one to begin with. But as I said in the video, if people are gonna see it, I might as well make it pretty!

Rubber sticks that would make it worse and harder to move... But I already mentioned the teflon tube that I could put in there in the video! 😃👍
....and who doesn't like a nice hole? lol
The one who is getting drilled a new one, I suppose.
It’s a steal cable tube for a reason the copper tube is a soft metal and if you put in the bug the wire will cut your copper like a saw. I thought you were Going to do it right spend the money and get the replacement cable after spending all that money on the paint and all that work and you had that 57 in the shed I mean I can’t watch you anymore.

I think if you ran that steel cable through the copper tube back and forth continuously for about 30 yaers...it still wouldn't wear through. The cable moves about 1/4 inch from closed to open. You'd have to move it millions of times to wear through the copper.
@@martinharris5017 These are the kinds of comments I am forced to talk about all the time! Haha! I got a lot of this kind of nonsense on this video today. The cable probably pulls about 2 inches though, but even still, its gonna take MANY MANY times to wear through if I left it as/is.... the tube is $5 currently at the hardware store, and can be replaced easily. Zinc Chromate. Yuk! Engineering job I had years ago had a need for plating on v-belt pulleys. Diesel engines, many outside in the elements. They were scratching their heads wondering where to have it done. I piped up: "There's a plater in the Industrial Park behind my house"! ;)
Zinc chromate indeed... icky poopy. Not the thing you want behind your house LOL
@@DuckmanCycles Yeah. Actually, now that I think about it, it was Cadmium anodizing. And the place (even if it is still there) was on the opposite side of the park and downwind...
That chromium stuff is pretty harsh... it was also used in the primer that Earl coated Miss Eleanore with.
Fusquinha top...
