The Internet of Things has been in the news recently following the DDOS attack on Dyn. It highlighted the security problems with IoT. But what is the problem? Let me explain.

Thanks for the excellent presentation Gary. I had to notice that the background for your video is Jakarta. Great job!
Last seconds of your video were very scary...! Im very convinced now !
Wow the way you talk about things, the way you explain..
Please bring more of these!
Dear Gary, this is an excellent overview. Very novice-friendly. Thank you for this.
Thanks Gary. You got the security concepts across without impenetrable jargon and acronym soup :)
A very good video! Very nice explanations :)
Unfortunately, this is so true that security is on the priority list somewhere at the bottom :(
As always great info from Gary.
Very detailed and informative video.... Well done Sir 👍👍👍👍👍
as always well explained.. looking fwd for more such videos... fantastic Gary..
your videos are a bit underrated as for the views IMO. Great interesting video, keep 'em up :)
Wise words Gary
Many thanks
Awesome video Gary. Snooper's Charter passed into legislation in the UK this week, any thoughts? Apparently the most draconian piece of legislation in western Europe as regards individual privacy.
Very good explanation. I would add to that though, that IoT does not have the same security perception as 'regular' devices, meaning that where people have been drilled for over a decade to use antivirus, update software etc. a fridge or toaster does not seem like it's in the same class. Why should I update my toaster? I think much more needs to be done on the awareness side also.
Well said Gary. Keep up the good work.
great video..!! Thank you Gary..!!
Very good and interesting video. Thank you.
Well explained, thank you!
LMFAO that cashier is scanning the apples and weighing the celery? lol ok...
Interesting, great job
THE CAMERA GUY I know, lol. I was wondering what exactly IoT was, and it was answered in the first 2 minutes
THE CAMERA GUY I just subscribed to you
I'm going to upload some more on my own channel this week
gr8 video Garry. Keep it up
Gary the best !! Which phone is the best in your choice??
THE CAMERA GUY Thats nice !!
great video, great channel. Thanks a lot!
1:17 even Gary doesn't use the Android authority app
where do i buy that painting behind hI'm?
thanks sir
Good Stuff... Cheers!
Any idea how to remove the background music? Can't continue due to the background noise distraction.
garry sims keep making this kinda videos
I agree with the points you made Gary but I think this can go one step further. IoT devices are usually inside Small Office/Home networks and are NATed through the gateway routers.
I think it is also the responsibility of the manufacturers of these routers to incorporate a competent firewall into their boxes. These firewalls can be maintained by ISPs and the router manufacturers.
This will give a double layer of security and also move the point of first defense farther away from the IoT devices inside the network. Further, the IoT devices can continue shrinking in size as the won't need extra security hardware in them.
IoT devices are connected to the Internet in more ways than just from inside Small Office/Home networks and are NATed through the gateway routers.
interesting lecture
I'm surprised that there are that many IoT devices available on the market with no security features on them!
apparently the debug feature I've seen so far is on android, I'm not sure about other devices though
nobody explains better than Garry! lol
If we have so many security vulnerabilities in devices designed to be somewhat secure such as smartphones and computers I can only imagine the security disaster that the IoT has brought to the table.
Did Dyn not setup their firewall correctly? Why didn't DDOS attack happen on Google DNS instead?
But Jeep is a car manufacturer and there problem was car hijacking and consumer safety, unlike iOT devices people won't really care that much about twitter getting hacked. I had hoped that you would mention that video where a drone hijacked light bulbs and continuously kept turning them on and off.
I am thinking about making my university's final project based on this theme. What do you guys think about it?
Luiz Henrique Cunha how did you do?
What's Address Space Randomisation??
The full name is "address space layout randomization". If you do a Google search for that term you will find lots of info about it.
Lol that was the debate topic for the entire country this month of november
Great video as always Garry. I do want to point you on one point though. You claim in the video that you can use the random password that comes with your WiFi router. But sadly it turns out that most of these are not totally random, in fact they are partly based on the manufacturer of the router!! So change it anyway!!

Everything needs to be overengineered to the scale of the Sega Saturn. It's the only way to be sure... By the time just the DRM's cracked, it would be 20 years since any of a type of device was ever used!
the back ground music competing with his speech is disturbing to listen.
After the pf debate topic..
Great details and explanations but man that background sound was damn annoying
video was very long you should divide into 2 two parts..like problems and part 2 solving problems...pls reply...
dubsmash PRO Why??
Djordje Mojsic ...bcz long videos irritate me....i become tired when video is not ends...
I don't think consumers will care that much about security.
However when their Internet Service Providers start suspending their broadband Internet services because they are hosting insecure IoT devices, THEN they will care when they can't use the internet normally.....
HEY
Explaining that seriously did not need 15 minutes. Why is he losing the superb quality of his content?
You didn't like the segment about the DDoS attack or the bit about some of the possible solutions like mbed OS?
Gary Sims I am not saying I disliked it, I learned each and everything you said but I think you could have shortened it. The way you explain stuff is brilliant but compare the amount of information conveyed in other Gary Explain videos such as Java VS C, the Cortex A73, power bank one, SD card formats and most others with this one, it is quite very detailed in those and much more than conveyed than in this one. Please don't take it otherwise, you are the best tech "explainer" I've found till now but I've gotta mention where I feel you lacked. And thanks for paying attention to the comments. Great work any ways. ☺
Different folks, different strokes, I honestly prefer in depth as supposed to being given a general idea
love dosing websites
I can't find a way to connect my fitbit to my microwave oven. Maybe I should throw another IoT thing in the middle.
This guy looks just like Lester Crest from GTA5
IoT manufacturers, think about the BABIES!!!
Watch_dogs 2 anyone?
Couldn't hear beyond the first 30 secs to 1 min - the background sound/music is annoying making it difficult to hear what he is saying...I guess it would be a very good video without the background music
gary the hacker launched new hack...he hacked twitter and most other websites...gary i loved your videos...
I don't have to watch the video to answer the question. What is wrong with IOT Security? There is NO security.
The s in iot comes from security.
Nop its mee😋😑
ABSOLUTELY NO WAY for the first point in that list to work. I don't need to explain you how difficult it would be to provision such routers (unique passwords). It would take a massive amount of work if you have to provision like 5000-6000-7000 of them today. It would be plain impossible. I'd rather have two factor authentication than that.
Odd, because all devices are provisioned with a unique MAC address....
True, but if you have to do anything on them you will need some form of access... And that requires a set of credentials of some sort. Essentially you want them to do more than just to be added to your network.
xpucm0ca Yes, of course. The latest modem I got from my telco has a unique password with a sticker on the back of the case. It is no harder for a manufacturer to do this than it is for smartphone makers to put a MAC address and an IMEI in a phone. Most phones come with a sticker showing the IMEI. It is the same principle. Not hard at all.
xpucm0ca The point is that provisioning unique ids in a piece of equipment isn't hard.
_What's wrong with it, gain some knowledge. Research it, if that's not fun enough watch Watch Dogs 2 walkthrough_

search `ip camera trolling` theres thousands of funny videos
Lol, and if all this oversimplified theoretical classroom bullshit is actually implemented the cost of IOT devices will increase by 500%. Smart.
