Same here..i'm glad we both like her for she is truly a treat to any and maybe to all singers who try and attempt to display a so called belting even at their aged years...
You forget to put Ms. Bassey...she has the ability and grace when it comes to deliver a powerful and emotional performances for the whole night alone and still her voice is in top shape to this days...
Thanks so much! And yeah the worst part about people failing to hone their technique is that usually they have a couple things naturally that could put them above most others, but the bad outweighs the good. For instance, I'd have been devastated if Demi hadn't focused on increasing her resonance and losing tension because she has such a naturally big sound in her belting range.
6:15 wow you can see her larynx shoot up! I've never seen that happen to a girl, especially since they don't have apples so it's harder to tell if they strain unless it sounds squeezed and raspy!
Yes..i agree..maybe the uploader of this video didn't know or forgot Ms. Bassey...Shirly has so much power and emotion regardless of belting..if i will to pick between Patti, i would rather chose Bassey for she is truly a diva not to mention her ability to deliver a powerful performance live continuously for the whole night of her concert...
Well Demi is a full lyric soprano, and she's sung up t a Eb6 in a connected headvoice. As for lower register, none has shown adequate support nor skill down there, although at least Demi has phrased down there.
I actually was gonna include Hayley cuz I remembered her nodules haha. I just didn't wanna include too many people and make a twenty minute video. But I loves me some Hayley.
I always wondered why Charice's voices always sounds so unnatural. She has incredible natural ability and such prowess but she needs to embrace her natural sound and the purity of her tone. Lowering her larynx does nothing for her. JHud is a LOT better than that old video. Her breathing is better and she mixes better now. Her technique seems to be getting better. Her voice won't go for a while.
Naw I think she can sing her face off. She's just abit young and I wouldn't think she's shown anything off range wise XD Or even having a decent technic yet.
I don't wanna be mean but *laughing at loud literally* at Shanice trying to pull a Mariah on "O Holy Night" yet ending up being incredibly flat bwhahahahahahhahahahahahahahha
The thing is, listening to her early performances, you see her hitting F5s with.a neutral larynx. Age doesn't just suddenly change that... :/ Haha I don't recall throwing shade at Kelly Rowland... :P I have come to view her as DC's weakest member tho now that you mention it though. At least present day. Jessica Sanchez IS overrated lol. I really can't force myself to think on Simpson too much. it's weird tho, many rank her technique below Aguilera but as you said, her voice seems less damaged
She's better than I showed here now, I have to admit. But all in all she still isn't a first class performer. She has very little musicianship and sings self-indulgently. She also doesn't have very good intonation. I like some of her vocals, though. I think she's pretty and a good actress also, but that's leaving the realm of singing lol
Yeah Kelly slayed those G#5s. I get what you mean by critiquing the same vocalists, but this was specifically to serve as a wakeup call to viewers rather than the usual insulting them just to insult them. Jessica IMO is very talented but needs to break several very unhealthy habits that will stint her growth as an artist and vocalist drastically.
You prefer Jessica. Demi is better. Those are two songs. Not every song she performs. You can't make the same statement about Jessica (LOL @ her totally ripping off Beyonce's I Am version of Sweet Dreams on American Idol, btw). Anyone who actually knows what they're talking about when it comes to vocals would agree with every point I made in my last argument. Also, don't tell me about a "broader" audience. A broader audience thinks Christina Aguilera is a phenomenal singer, LOL.
I couldn't get over Kelly's G#5s. Those were freaking awesome. This video entertained me, though critiquing the same vocalists is getting tired. Alicia and Christina know they need to get it together, but they are making too much money to care. Jessica Simpson can't sing. Shanice can sing, but her throat likes to take vacations. Charice lost resonance (she was beast in her pre-teens). Leave Jessica Sanchez out the mix. That girl has natural power at 4:18 /watch?v=SreYpE_41QE But Good job!
Lightningshock12 reading your comments about Demi gave me an epiphany. Many of Demi's fans say her voice doesn't sound the same as when she was younger, and I say thank God, because that proves she got better. When Demi 1st debuted her technique was similar to Christina's- atrocious. She did unhealthy things to make her voice sound bigger than it actually was, and ironically it is because of that forced sound that people noticed her. Now she has proper training and her voice is natural.
@0Aspiringstar0 No no no... I didn't mean YOU threw shade at Kelly. Superpianogirl123 kind of did. He lumped her in with Shanice as kind of stating their on the same level. Ironically they are two sides of the same coin though. Haha! Kelly has good technical singing ability, but her stamina is lacking. Shanice may not have the same amount of technical skill as Kelly, but home girl can hold the hell out of a note.
But if you listen closely you'll see that her voice is well connected. Her lows are supported- mostly, her belts don't seem that bad, her headvoice is her best asset, all around she is good. Jessica Simpson must be doing something right. She is older than Christina, but hasn't lost nearly as much range, so maybe Jess still has time to clean up her act. As for Alicia, I've come to the conclusion that maybe her technique wasn't as sound as we thought, and she was singing on youthfullness.
I still can't appreciate Jessica Sanchez. She is highly overrated in my opinion. Don't shade Kelly Rowland, that girl can sing. Let's not forget she was in Destiny's Child and all 3 of those girls have above average techniques. The only thing I have bad to say about Kelly is her support. She runs out of breath so fast and I think that's attributed to the fact that she's not used to holding down the stage as a solo artist, which is why her best live performances are when she is with other artist.
Why is it some singers work to do this on purpose? It seems like those that have crystal clear voices when they're younger (late teens, early 20's) work to get that grit to their voices. They can still sing clearly if they want but they want a different tone. Is there a safe way to do this with damaging your voice?
(Part 2 of my comment) Charice started to use the right technique nowadays (thank goodness for that!) and Jessica Sanchez's growls are a bit over-the-top. We know that Beyonce is her biggest inspiration but obsessing with her dynamics too much could lead her to that performance. :P Also I just noticed, funny how I haven't seen ONE comment about Christina Aguilera haha! ;P
Wow you could be a teacher (or are you already one haha lol)! I COMPLETELY agree in what you said. Starting off with Alicia Keys, what happened to her? She sounded like she was gonna give up when she was sustaining that strained C5 note. Jessica Simpson made me laugh. First, her throaty D5 note and then her facial expression! XD (Part 1 of my comment...)
Ageing doesn't necessarily make you lose your voice, but it exposes the bad habits that were already there. Maybe Alicia had a lot of bad habits that are being exposed thanks to her body changing. And then the fact of 'Girl on Fire' being written so high doesn't help.
Love your videos. I guess you could call me a fan. I can get up to like a f#4 or G4 in like complete chest voice. I have the worst troubles trying to mix. Any suggestions?
Trust and believe if Jessica Sanchez gets good training her voice is going to change too, because she is one step away from hemorrhaging in the throat area.
Considering everyone here aside from Mariah and Beyonce was being used as an example of how not to sing, that isn't saying much. Anyway, like I said to someone else. Jennifer has improved enough to save her voice. She's still got some major flaws vocally though. That being said, I do like her. She just needs to improve her belting technique, develop a lower register, abs advance her musicality. P.s. what's her weight loss got to do with her singing...?
Charice and Jessica Sanchez are not bad singers, but they have bad habits though. Too much growling can be very bad for the vocal cords and pushing the larynx down to have that "fatter" tone can be very damaging as well. Pushing down the larynx also makes it harder to ascend up the scale when belting. If the larynx was push down a C5,it would be impossible to ascend up to an E5 or a G5 with ease.
I do understand the purpose of this video. Alicia did started off singing without any strain, but I still appreciate her effort. I still love her voice, singing, and artistry. She was amazing during her debut, but I still love her now. I think that someone's voice will decline no matter how their technique is. She's belting at the piano, which is pretty hard to do continously. It's not easy belting and playing the piano simultaneously.
Thanks a lot! :) And well, if you're a girl then the whole going to F#4 in chest would make sense, since that's where the chest voice of a woman stops. As far as mixing, I'd say first work on strengthening your head voice. Then once it's gotten a bit more strength, experiment trying to add head to your chest. Look up Sophie Shear's video on how to extend range. It's on youtube, very helpful stuff! :)
Not to jump in or anyting or take from your argument, but Jessie has sang up to an A5 fully supported and....wait.....we were talking about Jessica sanchez??!!!!! I tought we were talking about Jessie J.!!!!!! Bwahahahahaahahahahah that only makes it worse, cause Demi smashes Jess without batting an eyelash. The girl has a very tense sound throughout her range. But very nice voice.
"More finesse". Call me when Jessica actually resonates in the soprano range ONCE, let alone multiple times during a single song/concert. Also, Demi was never nearly as karaoke as Jessica. At all. I don't know what Natural Woman performance you watched, cuz Demi did it pretty well: In tune, not over the top. Jessica's vibrato earns her no points since she constricts the sound column throughout her whole range. Melisma gives no points either since, like I said, it's directly copied from others.
Yes, not karaoke. As in, unlike Jessica, she does not 'cover' songs note for note, run for run, dynamic for dynamic. Like I just said, she has that, belting, and head voice, considering her head voice is more connected. There's also the fact that unlike Jessica, Demi has a naturally big sound and a natural tone, whereas Jessica forces both her tone and the size of her voice with her bad larynx position. That's the truth of it. It's cool you prefer Jessica, but she isn't better than Demi.
You are on fire tonight. I love love love this video. You di an amazing job. My friend if it was common sense 90% people in the world wouldn't be abusing their voices like the ladies in this video. I am just shocked at Alicia. How in the world did she go from sliding up to a resonant G#5 to straining on a simple C5? Sigh, how the mighty fall. Again, great, amazing, incredible video.
My grammar is killing me tonight, my gosh. Time to clean it up. You're right. When one listens real closely, they hear incredible things. When I started paying attention to Xtina's vocals, oh my gosh, my ears started bleeding. The same thing is starting to happen with Jhud(although she has her good moments).
I understand. All I know is, gurl can BLOW!!!!! I remember when I was a little kid, and camp rock came out, I was like "this white girl can SAAAANNNGGG" hahahahaaha. Oh she has the potental to be an extremely capable vocalist. She already has a HUGE resonant sound in the mid register, and a beautiful(even somewat skillful) connected sound in Headvoice.
Lol yeah I know, I was wondering myself... Well Usher has some really good studio riffs, I don't know if they transfer live though, I'll have to check. Same with Justin Timberlake. I might look into a few gospel singers too, I've heard that this one singer named Tonex has really good runs
Yeah I thought whn he said "jess" he meant Jessie J. *slaps forehead* This reall changes things now. I must say though, the basic VP that I know is conflicting with my skin color cause I liked Jessica's portion on this video. Can can saaaannnng. (I meant that in asubjective way).
Demi is NOT a mezzo. At all. Pretty much everything about her screams the full lyric soprano she is. And I don't really ever see Jessica reaching her, let alone surpassing. Both have no lower register, Demi has much more free, resonant belts and a more connected head voice. Also she's not karaoke.
Yeah, I'm using boy bands and singing contest competitors for examples of bad haha. Yeah, probably gonna use Tori also. Not sure about Candice tho...... She's great overall, but her runs in particular never struck me as mind blowing.
ooh, I had almost forgotten about scott! I'll be sure to use him. And I wasn't planning on it, no haha. I want to use singers that aren't used a lot in videos, so I'm either limiting or totally omitting usage of Christina, Beyoncé, Mariah, etc
It's such a shame Jessica Simpson is ruining her voice because she could've been up there with Barbra, tbh. She really does have a set of lungs because of only Barbra could've held a note like that, but the strain was absolutely unbearable on it.
Haha well I feel like that'd be redundant, the same stuff applies as with female voices... However, I do plan on doing a run on good runs versus bad runs very soon, and I'm trying my best to incorporate males into that :)
Exactly. I kind of got to thinking about the moment when I realized Christina is actually a bad vocalist as "The Enlightenment" LOL. I think that realization is usually the first step people take in their knowledge of vocals.
However, I completely understand, in context, how Demi's fach was misunderstood, since her main competitor within her stanbase, Ariana Grande, is maybe the lightest, highest voice I've EVER heard.
Either way Jessie shall be smashed, but grea concept! I've been waiting on somebody to do that battle seeing as how Bey is a big influence on Jessie. Chia Ann McClain though? Really? bwahahahahhahaa
Very good evaluation. Such a shame singers like Christina, Jessica, and Charice have done so much to their voices and never lived up to their potential is sad. Not as sad as Alicia though...
Alicia is so frustrating.... In her debut era, she (like Haley Reinhardt) was one of very few vocalists with a raspy voice who still sang without straining. Sigh...glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching!
Oops, tell me why I thought you were talking about Jessie J?!! XD Bwhahahhah nevermind my previous statement, Beyonce wll SLAUGHTER Jessica. And Demi mops the floor with her.
She's iiigt hahahahaha I'm playing, she're pretty good. mmmm I won't say she's supeior oto Demi just yet. I have to hear Jessie's lower register and headvoice.
Yeah Demi's always been a soprano. It makes no sense for a teenage girl to go from a mezzo to a soprano when puberty is causing their voices to darken xD
I have a few more ideas with the same concept but covering different areas of vocals, which I'll try to get posted as soon as I can. Glad you enjoyed :)
I actually don't think Jennifer Hudson is a "timebomb" anymore. She's a lot better vocally NOW than she was in the clip you posted. Great video, though.
YES at this video. The way you explained the concepts to all future viewers of your channel was so elaborate and well-thought out. Amazing.
"Alicia and Christina know they need to get it together, but they are making too much money to care." So true!
Thanks! And yeah I hope so too. I don't doubt her at all.
I considered that after posting this actually haha. She has improved enough to keep her voice, but she still has a lot of room for growth.
Thanks!
Very interesting points, thanks for commenting!
Thank you!
She's such a beast
6:15 wow you can see her larynx shoot up! I've never seen that happen to a girl, especially since they don't have apples so it's harder to tell if they strain unless it sounds squeezed and raspy!
Also you should try to do a video on how to save the voice :)
Thanks! Lol honestly I wanted to use that same clip of Alicia where you compared it with Michelle's C#5 but I couldn't find it :P
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! :)
That's a very nice video. I really enjoyed.
Love this video I hope Beyoncé will get better and better through the year
Amazing work! Great! =)
Love this.
Yes..i agree..maybe the uploader of this video didn't know or forgot Ms. Bassey...Shirly has so much power and emotion regardless of belting..if i will to pick between Patti, i would rather chose Bassey for she is truly a diva not to mention her ability to deliver a powerful performance live continuously for the whole night of her concert...
there's nothing wrong with grittiness. The trouble is when they aim for grittiness but end up with strain.
Well Demi is a full lyric soprano, and she's sung up t a Eb6 in a connected headvoice. As for lower register, none has shown adequate support nor skill down there, although at least Demi has phrased down there.
I do hope Alicia and all the other singers can fix their vocal problems regarding their technique.
Oh, DEFINITELY. Isn't that the one Natalie did in the latest BDTR episode?
Can you also explain a little about Cher?
Weight los can affect the voice. Look at Maria Callas.
I know exactly what you mean. But it's up to us to listen with real musical ears :P
I actually was gonna include Hayley cuz I remembered her nodules haha. I just didn't wanna include too many people and make a twenty minute video. But I loves me some Hayley.
That's her natural voice...she's a contralto
I always wondered why Charice's voices always sounds so unnatural. She has incredible natural ability and such prowess but she needs to embrace her natural sound and the purity of her tone. Lowering her larynx does nothing for her.
JHud is a LOT better than that old video. Her breathing is better and she mixes better now. Her technique seems to be getting better. Her voice won't go for a while.
/watch?v=Q81da1q94IQ
Oh Jessica and her throaty and strainy E5 notes and her facial expressions! :P
@0AspiringStar0 hahahahhahah same thing happened to ne lol.btw thanks for replying :)
How about making a video about vibrato? :)
I understand and feel the exact same way. But hey, at least she's still a good lyricist. And good-looking. Ha
Lol I could make a full length film on Beyonce's F5s
Naw I think she can sing her face off. She's just abit young and I wouldn't think she's shown anything off range wise XD Or even having a decent technic yet.
alicia's decline will always bug me...seriously what the FUCK happened, she used to have a relatively good technique...xtina was always doomed
I really can't force myself to think on Simpson too much. it's weird tho, many rank her technique below Aguilera but as you said, her voice seems less damaged
oooo you just mean hahahahaha. Give her time, she'll develop into a fne young actress and singer. How about 10 years :D
Well I don't really listen to her, so I wouldn't know for sure. But she's pretty old, so I'm assuming no haha
You prefer Jessica.

I love this video! More people should know the truth haha
LOL
I couldn't get over Kelly's G#5s. Those were freaking awesome. This video entertained me, though critiquing the same vocalists is getting tired. But Good job!
Bassey is an asbolute diva. I've never heard someone outside of gospel music belt with such ferocity and conviction. Bassey is my fav belter.
Easy to impress? How about I know talent when I hear it. Since you share primo's brain, you can have a seat as well lol. Hilar...
Another example of an incredible belter who's voice is still in fine shape is Shirley Bassey - one of the best belters EVER IMO
OMG great video. As soon as I saw you included Alicia I knew this would provide the absolute KIII loool
She's come a long way though. She's more consistent now. She'll get there I'm sure :)
It was Girl on Fire live on Storytellers xD
Lightningshock12 reading your comments about Demi gave me an epiphany. Ha! You wish jennifer hudsons voice was getting weaker.
She lost all that weight and still outsings half the people on that video...
There is a difference between singing loudly and singing beautifully. Some of you have volume confused with technique, CLEARLY.
This is amazing!!!! I watched it 3 times for now :D now everything seems making sense why those singers sound like that.
Considering everyone here aside from Mariah and Beyonce was being used as an example of how not to sing, that isn't saying much.

I honestly think she could have been close second to Beyonce vocally. Or maybe distant second lol. Let's just say yes, she could have been very good
I actually don't think Jennifer Hudson is a "timebomb" anymore. She's a lot better vocally NOW than she was in the clip you posted. Great video, though.
LOL. I kinda thought that when I originally saw y'all talking about it but I wasn't sure whether you know who he was referring to or not XD
Oops, sorry I would've responded earlier but for some reason I didn't a notification!
Thankyouer, I am steadily learning hahahaha.
Leave Jessica and her facial expressions alone; it's called getting ugly with it. Lol!
I just didn't know her haha. I'll be sure to check her out though, I remember hearing the name before :) thanks for watching!
Mm.. that's an interesting idea, but I'm not certain I could figure out a whole video's worth of things to say about it :o
Sony Vegas 10. You can UA-cam search how to get it for free if you don't feel like paying several hundred dollars... Hehe
Lol, she really is. Her and Dorinda Clark-Cole's influence on Jazmine is unmistakable. I look forward to the video :)
