Frankie Dunlop is my all time favorite drummer in accompanying Monk. Other cats were great but Dunlop fit Monk like a glove - much like Rouse did on tenor
Thelonious Monk /A great inventor, an innovator in spite of himself, without calculations, all to his genius this Thelonious Monk of my heart with his very particular piano technique, his percussive way of tapping on the black and white keys of the keyboard with his hands like rackets and his fingers like drumsticks, his harmonic finds from the other sphère, his own and uncompromising swinging, his melodic honesty that goes from the most obvious, the most elegant, to the most dramatic of the singing of a black piano, the melancholy Around Midnight etc ... then he can do the bear dance around his black piano without being taken for a madman, but for a genius, a good genius who holds us by the goatee, a saviour of the homeland of the soul and the heart. Thank you so much for your music, always dear Thelonicous! P.G.Y Patrick Geffroy Yorffeg
it's like connecting to the spirts without ego, without parenting or trauma. there's nothing between him and his connection to source and he has an almost undefinable way to express it through the vibrating air of Jazz. His combo is able to get on the frequency with him and tap in. This has go to be one of the most inspired recorded performances I've ever experienced. I just started listening him to him in 2023 and he's elevated my life.
He was an 11 lifepath like myself. We're always stuck somewhere in between our own world and spirit realms beyond our own little existence. Also, we make great music. 😊
I did not know about this performance, thank you so much! I agree, Monk had legendary players in his groups, Sonny, Coltrane, Griffith, Gales, Riley... but this line-up with Rouse, Dunlop and Ore is THE TOP
“Solo Monk”, recorded between October 31, 1964 and March 2, 1965, was Thelonious Monk's eighth album with Columbia Records. Even though he released several solo albums, each one meriting particular attention, “Solo Monk” arguably stands tall as his very best unaccompanied album. 1:40 [Thelonious Monk Site]
Monk’s playing style is very unique, using sparse voicings and omitting notes to add dissonance. Another distinctive element of his playing is an extremely strong time feel. His soloing usually relies on motifs and is often based on the melody of the song. [PianoGroove]
Few musicians have had such a distinctive sound, nor such an iconic presence, as jazz pianist Thelonious Monk. He was an accomplished piano player who deliberately stripped back his technique to create a style that is spare, abstract, wilful, witty, angular and lyrical. 2:56 [Jazzfuel]
This is a genius folks. God bless him and all of you for being aware of it. I strongly urge everyone to purchase merchandise and vinyl directly from his website.

I love this and the All of Me arrangement you did. Would you consider doing a lesson on how you compose these great tunes? I learned so much from your video on composing a song using just a melody
I've been using the real book to play songs like this one. They never sound as good as your arrangements. What's your secret bro? I watched your video on creating chords using just a melody and that helped lots. Wish you'd make more lessons like that
It seems to be a bit speeded up, the tune is in B flat and here almost B. But the guy in the front row that can be seen behind Monk totally amazed by his runs, that's gold! 🤣
If there was ever a drummer deserving of wider recognition, it was Frankie Dunlap.
Dunlop
Dunkirk
Yessir! Give the drummer some

this is one of monks most genius moments right here.
Totally agree. What a solo!
That part in charles' solo with the same chords takes it to another level complete with the visual of monk dancing facing charles. Art!
timelessly hip tune and these guys are burning it up, so tight. Long live Monk
What a legend… no one can play piano this way
Yeah, not a lot of piano players dance like that
What
Four men swinging like there's no tomorrow!
Is it just me but i seriously hear DukeEllington in Monks playing.!!!!!!
You wrong, you listen Thelonious Monk.

Well...that was friggen awesome!
I'm not a big fan of colorized videos, but this one was nicely done.It does enhance the excitement!
👏🏾👏🏾
Holy cow it’s THE Ron Carter!
yeah man
I did not know about this performance, thank you so much!

One of my fav rhythm sections of all time - pure joy!

3:33!
FRANKIE!!! Fun even with the sound off. Listen to his interview when he imitates Sphere- hysterical. Golden era of music.
Wow 😳 got here from a Jamie Fox video and I'm VERY impressed. Had heard the name before but that's it.

musical and dance genius
Charlie Rouse is one of my favorite sax players. His sounds is synonymous with Monk, surprised to see he plays tenor and not alto
Celui qui n'a pas vu ni entendu Thelonious Sphere Monk doit se sentir bien misérable cette nuit, comme tant d'autres. 😎
Great performance of this Monk Classic. Nice tempo.
still love his drumming!!
D'une grande pureté | Good job cats
Wow! All of them at their best-some kind of rare synergy!
Monk was a genious. Great presentation
Such a fun song.
Loving that 👌
It doesn't get any better than this. Just discovered this video. What a great Friday night for me.
Thank you for posting this gem. What a play we can see!!
Genius
Crazy! 😆 👍
The man with the sun glasses was enjoying it so far

Amazing
For some reason it reminds me of the jingle “Blue Skidoo we can too!”
I wonder if the producer of Blues Clue is a fan of Monk lol
Very likely quoting this tune
imagine being Charlie rouse suddenly not hearing the piano anymore and wondering what the f is going on
He was used to it. If you know the melody, you always know where you are and what's going on.

I have the same hat
Nabe m'a amené ici.
🤯🤯🤯🤯🥰
Hier sieht und hört man, wie körperbetont Monks Musik ist!
The tempo really went nuts here - picked up speed like they were going down hill.
That’s jazz my friend if you can’t handle the heat get off the ride
@@raphcourte420 Was I complaining? No. Simply a comment. Go back to the Disney website and let the adults comment here, K sweetie?
what is the hat monk has on called?
Is this a black and white film, that's later been coloured?
The sound is in B, although you can see monk is playing in Bb
directly from Area 51
Swingin
blue ska-doo, you can too
It seems to be a bit speeded up, the tune is in B flat and here almost B.

I don't like that its sped up by the recording, loses a bit of swing
wow! he played in B, not Bb
He's playing in Bb, it's the older recording that makes it sound sharp.
They're playing in B flat, but the recording was sped up somehow.
MONKは何かわからないけど何かあるんだ😂
Is Thelonious high, drunk or just incredibly hip....? His pre-solo walkabout is unbelievable
🤓
monk suffered from extreme bipolar disorder
The left hand during his solo, so selective!
BOO the attempt at colorizing. but thanks for the sound
Brilliant drummer Frankie Dunlop 👏
