I have a 6007 with the AKM and I can hear the difference between the 2 filters. One sounds much brighter than the other. Still very glad with this amp.
I have the Yamaha R-S300 and the sound is just as awesome as the A-S500. Great stereo separation. Beefy power, and handles larger floor speakers with ease...and built like a tank just like the 500.

As for the guys standing outside with a flaming torch, everyone has a personal preference and that does not make anyone right or wrong it's just what you like and that's the most important thing enjoying your music. Also with different speakers that were say really bright, you may find the Yamaha too bright and the Marantz just perfect. Bloody fab more of this please 👍👍👌👌
Specifications not always says a lot, it is all depends to the sound you hear and the speakers pairing. Normally some say the Marantz are more warm sound and Yamaha brighter.
Dont know if it has any relevance but Yamaha is a unique company in that they manufacture musical instruments, professional audio equipment like digital mixers, and hifi equipment. So they are involved with each step of the chain.
Smart move. And congratulations on a fantastic bargain. When I bought mine I tested it against several usual suspects that everyone tries to push on you in showrooms as well as in the media (Cambridge, Marantz, NAD) and I found the AS500 superior or equal to them in performance and value for money. If an amp has superior wattage in tandem with better headroom, current output, and the ability to handle drops bellow 4 ohms it can do what it's supposed to do - make a speaker sound like it was designed to perform. With the AS500 you can listen to music all day long with the dial set between 9 and 10 and it will hardly get warm. And your sound will always be great, distortion free and tight as a fist. Their alleged brightness comes from the fact they have a very flat frequency response and are far more precise and revealing than their competition, exactly what a good speaker needs from a proper hi-fi amp, which the AS500 truly is. The brightness happens when you connect crappy speakers to it. I paid roughly 250 quid for mine new (in Australia) and thought I really got a great bargain. 13 years on and I still haven't heard a better performing amp in that category. Btw, I run B&W 684's on mine, roughly a similar performing speaker to yours, and the combination sounds great.
i wouldn't have thought the older Yamaha would win this comparison with the latest Marantz amplifier. I like the Marantz sound signature (own a Marantz mini system myself and it sound amazing in my bedroom with dali speakers) and last week i auditioned the PM6007+CD6007. Sound was full and warm though helped by the Q acoustic floor speakers it was paired with.
I have always liked Yamaha. They sound good and they usually last forever. I have the A-S801 right now in the living room pushing some Paradigm studio 100 v2’s and it sounds really good. Very happy with it. I happen to have a Rotel A11 Tribute coming today for the bedroom. It will be pushing some nice Energy bookshelf speakers and a sub. The Tribute is on sale at Crutchfield for $650. I couldn’t resist. We shall see how it compares to the 801
Impressive you survived the Marantz Appreciation Society witch hunt! As a moderate member of that society, I bought two budget Marantz amps and thought they were quite good, until I bought their premium PM-11S2 on a run out sale at half price... and that one amazed both myself and my wife from day one, until this day. Released in 2009, I would argue it is still the best integrated amp they have ever produced.

Ii have a PM 6007,rega brio R Yamaha AS 500, exposure 2012s2d, Yamaha AS 801. But 80% of the time I use either my Exposure or AS 500. It is thin sounding sometimes, but still it is the most natural sounding to me.
Honest review, heard very little difference between the two, the Yamaha had more clarity while the Marantz had a little "vacuum chamber effect" on the details, i would say the Yamaha would work better with less detailed speakers while the Marantz would work better with more detailed speakers. It's all personal preference at the end. one likes chocolate and the other likes vanilla etc..
Can I tell you, the Yammy is not in the same class as the PM6007 when matched to modern low ohm speakers. The Yammy sounds nice, but cant give the solid low end thunk that the Marantz can.
Plus, the Marantz has a toroidal transformer which, is more efficient, quieter, and allows the amp to have a more compact size and be less heavy. The Marantz also has "current feedback topology" making it similar to Harman Kardon's old high current receivers.
About 10 Years ago i bought Sonus Faber Toy Tower and Atoll IN 100 Amplifier( cost about 1000 Euros)..Then after a couple of months i wanted a Network Reciver and bought Yamaha R-N 500( Cost about 300 or 350 Euros)..I made a blind Test and There was no difference in sound between those 2...So my question ..Can you really hear the difference between Amplifier
As for second hand, I like to save a lot this way. Bought my audiolab amp, Block DAC, and sony x800 Blu ray player second hand. Also a MiND 180 for streaming (hi-res). If i bought all that new, would have cost me about 2200 more on these devices.
Ah that's a tough one as I've not listened to the Marantz Model 50 but I've heard good things. I don't think there's a DAC in the Marantz, so no digital inputs. I guess if I already had a good DAC I'd probably sway towards the Marantz.

Firstly, I'd recommend a speaker with a nominal impedance of 6 or 8ohms. Most speakers have a range of watts. For example, my Dali Oberon 5's have a recommended amplifier range of 30 - 150 watts per speaker. For 85 watts per channel you'd need a speaker that can handle up to 100 watts or more as you need a bit of headroom for Dynamic Power shifts. The Wharfedale Diamond 12.1's are 8 ohms and a have a recommended amplifier range of 20-100 watts so something like those would be fine.
Excellent review and comparison! So, about the loudness control. I have a-s 501 and during home cinema (2chanell), I don't touch it because I think when I turn it left the dialogues don't sound good enough. I think when you turn it, you boost the bass but lower the uppermids and treble (if I'm correct )......Did you hear the dialogues well and with enough treble when you turn it left?You put it at -30db in music only or also with home cinema?

Hi, i picked up the marantz quite impressed with the sound over my old nad 352 not as much low end though, is it normal for there to be a delay between switching inputs? ive been a/b ing my cd player between the rca and coax inputs and it seems to take a couple of seconds for the sound to come back through when switching back and forth
So… you’re also comparing CD players too. Maybe using the same CD player for both would be a more fair comparison . I couldn’t hear a difference. I’ve heard the marantz has a smiley face EQ sound but I don’t hear it. Maybe it’s the 5005

What hi fi test for A-S 501 : Our first impressions are good. This is a more muscular sounding unit than its predecessor. Its presentation is robust and tonally more even. The old A-S500, for all its appeal, had a rather lean and bright balance. In contrast this new one is better balanced. I have A-S 501 and it is not at all bright sounding.Also you don't have to pay for external dac, because it has it all ready, to connect the sound of TV and Bluray player

I have Marantz pm 6006, Dali Oberon 3 and Chord mojo 2 as DAC. I listened to the Yamaha ace 500 at someone's house and I liked it better. I'm going to do an audition with my system and the Yamaha. Do you think I should sell the Marantz and buy the Yamaha? I mention that I had the Yamaha ace 501 and returned it to buy the Marantz. I'm intrigued because it sounds very sterile and without dynamics. Then I had Dynavoice f6 ex v3 speakers.
@@UTILITARIANTVUK Not really, Topping E50 is very clean but very sterile sounding. I have one and even have an upgraded IFI power supply upgrade on it. I also own the Khadas Tone Board (only $99 but requires an external case) and it sounds much richer than the E50. I would recommend you check it out, the Topping E30 II, or SMSL SU-1. All sound better than the E50, currently my top DAC is the much more expensive SMSL DO200 MKII, but it is double the price of the E50. I really want to get the SMSL DO300EX.
Arrrgghhhhh you totally fucked up your explanation of the loudness feature on the Yamaha. Wrong wrong wrong dude. The loudness control is used at low listening levels to increase the sound of the bass and treble. Nothing to do with the volume.
@@UTILITARIANTVUK it means bass and treble volume. Try it the way i said. Turn the regular volume down to normal aka low listening levels then use loudness to add the missing bass and treble.
It just shows you that more expensive audio equipment does not always sound better. Not bad for an amp that first came out in 2010.

The Yamaha I think is not expandable with pre amp outs. That would make it a boat anchor. But I do like how Yamaha sounds .

I bought an vintage Marantz PM 67 3 weeks ago. tried Dali speakers but it sounds better with Wharfedales.

It's more for music than movies/TV. It boosts the upper and lower frequencies but lowers the mid range which is why you struggle to hear the dialogue.

If you're not worried about having a radio or using a turntable, the CXA81 is the superior amp in terms of sound.

In my experience, it is normal to have a slight delay. Think it's something to do with the capacitors having to charge and discharge.
So… you’re also comparing CD players too. Maybe using the same CD player for both would be a more fair comparison . I couldn’t hear a difference. I’ve heard the marantz has a smiley face EQ sound but I don’t hear it. Maybe it’s the 5005

Sorry but you're incorrect. Read page 9 of the manual where it states, 'rotate the LOUDNESS control until the desired 'volume' is obtained. ' 😄👍

Can either preamp a separate stereo amp for more power? No line outs. Can you use the record?
Record out is a fixed volume so not really optimal.
