1984 LeBaron 2.6 First Start/Mikuni Carb Adjustment

  • Picked up a 1984 LeBaron for my friend with the g54b/4g54 motor. It refused to run and idle, and according to the previous owner "would never run right with that carb". I got it running, and adjusted the choke and now it's fine! It has an issue with the brakes I wont be able to resolve while I have it, but it's really a nice car.
    I can't wait to see what he does with it.

    Those are great engines when they run right. We had an 85 New Yorker with the same engine. Was burning a little oil at 20k so Dad went from 10W30 to 10W40 which resolved that. Smooth, decent power (could break the front end loose pretty easily) Amazing AC. Aside from the oil issue 0 problems until about 110k miles. After that it was one thing after another. Timing chain broke $2000 in damages (apparently guides wear and you have to listen for it) AC went out $700ish Threw a rod at 115k or so. Went through 3 Jasper engines none of which worked as they should. Carb went sideways. After being turned away by several shops unwilling to even look at it we traded it in on something else in 95. I know some people ditch the Mikuni and put a Webber (I think) on and that allegedly solves carb issues. Someone who knows what they are doing and knows what to watch out for could probably keep one running and happy.

      This one seems to have been okay so far, but the motors are always hit or miss as far as stories I’ve heard of them

    What was that wah pedal looking thing you tossed on the ground at 10:07 ? Also, the all sixteenths wrench made me chuckle. I'd never heard that one before.

      @@neonpcmsplus that’s a Boss DD-5 digital delay pedal. One of my favorite bits is having anything but a microphone as a microphone.
      I stole the all/16ths from Richard Holdener, he would probably ace the RAADS test.

    isn’t that Mikuni carb emissions choked ? - wonder if Weber 34 DGEC carb would work - 🤔

      @invujerry  11 днів тому

      @@dexburwell it’s an o2 feedback carb, if it was mine I would swap something else on, but the guy it’s going to said it’ll either stay with this carb and the 2.6, or get a full SRT4 swap like my wagon has.

    I remember seeing a LOT of Chryslers back then (mostly caravans) that were always leaving clouds of blue smoke behind them. My shops teacher used to pronounce it MitsubUshi 😂

      @@grabasandwich yeah the 3.0 mitsu powered stuff usually had valve seal issues before 100k. My 89 van is really bad about it.

    I just got an 84 Reliant SE with this engine. Aside from the shifter linkage popping off on the column trying to get it out of park it runs great.

      @@lukeeagles1756 I’ve always avoided them since I favored the fuel injection stuff, but it really seems like a decent motor. I might look into getting one myself if I find the right one later.

      I appreciate it! But I don't think I'll end up doing much more to this before it goes off to the actual owner. I wish I had more time on my own to mess with it, because doing the brakes and suspension would be great. I do have a very crusty 86 LeBaron turbo wagon of my own that I will be working on, doing similar stuff with if you want to subscribe for that.
