Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket Review

- Can't believe it's taken me this long to review a mecha anime. Well, with 2016 finally upon us I decided to bring in the new year with a review for an OVA series from my second favorite franchise: Gundam!
The most "slice of life" of all Gundams
Probably why its the best.
Ha... Ha... Slice.
Ain't even a slice, shits the whole cake
That ends in a gut punch that still feels to this day.
More like "fries of life"
People of 2018: The DVDs are already out, and the official word is that the Blurays are coming soon (tm)!
Great review, this is the top Gundam film I have seen, and i have seen pretty much every Gundam film ever made in the 80s and 90s. This is the only Gundam film that made me cry. the character creation touches deep inside me. And not to mention that this series was designed by my fav. 90s animator. 佐藤晴彦 (who created the original Macross TV and movie series). The story line was great as well, put you in perspective on both sides of the war. With minimal mech battles, this film was mainly focusing on the true feeling of a war, and reiterated no one win on the battle field.
War in the pocket is an ova series not a film.
@@nothing-but-milk9176 You know what he meant smartass.
I am such a monster because I wanted Al to tell Chris who the pilot of the Zaku was
Nediojon I think everybody did
Really good review. Allowing the viewer to digest a lot of information yet not feel like they're being fed too much.
Well the Zaku 2 FZ (Or Kai) was originally made in universe as a part of the "Universal Maintenance plan" due to Zeon's numerous designs, they were redesigned for general parts so its easier to maintain them
It’s another model for them to sell, that’s just an excuse for them to make it.
I've been a fan of Gundam for a while now and my collection is growing, it's great to see one of my favourite youtubers do a review of one of the best things that the Gundam franchise has given us.
And here we see David Hayter piloting a giant mech since Metal Gear Solid
This seems like a great series
The best gundam imo.
indeed
Most realistic one for sure
Imo it has a legitimate claim to being one of the best anime ever
We need more U.C.0079 Universe Stories with realistic mobile suits like in this series & the 08th MS Team, instead of Angel feathered Mobile Suits that have more in common with Super Robots than Real Robots...I loved seeing Old Mobile Suits coming to battle in Unicorn along with all kinds of GM's and that Custom Byarlant!
Hey, just wanted to say thank you for your effort it does not go unoticed! As someone who watched this a long time ago You pretty much masterfully condensed a emotionally charged classic into a awesome mix of a review and reminder review, making me relive the key points and weaving a tricky web of the relationship dynamics of the characters into a well organized but not too linear review, with good storytelling , also I feel like the music of this series was paramount in making this series so raw ! Great job!
Thank you very much for the incredibly kind words! It certainly made my day knowing that this review still holds up after all this time. I wish I could do more reviews like this for the channel, but I just don't have the time due to other priorities beyond UA-cam (such as my Draco Azul comics and novels). However, if you enjoy my content I highly recommend my friend TitanGoji's Gundam reviews. He's done a fantastic job working his way through the franchise with his yearly batches of Gundam reviews!
best part of the ova was the hamburger part just made it feel so much more real
Just a pile of hamburger. *me* T __ T BERNIE NOOOOOOOOOOO
Just minor nitpick: The Kampfer is actually a limited production grunt mobile designed for infiltration missions that is why it was disassembled and built inside the colony which made the armor of the machine extremely thin than other models like the Zaku ii kai and other machines but greatly help with its speed.
I vaugely remember having a Gundam toy as a kid with some kind of like, rose astetic and an escape pod.
Also, the Alex's armor did exactly what it needed to do; it absorbed that hit that would have taken the mech out and left it free to counter attack. It works like an armored skirt or an RPG screen on a tank basically.
The Alex could have easily absorbed that damage itself. The new Chobham armor was considered a technological dead end. It got adapted for use on the new GM Cannon, but didn't provide enough protection to warrant its continued use versus the Gundarium which the Alex was armored with, and which future mass produced suits would rely on as well... Which is strong enough to absorb the blast of some nuclear weapons.
google gundam rose from G gundam i bet thats what your toy was
Zaku II kai's performance was on par to gelgoog mass production type but at cost of low operating time since it uses too much fuel for boosters.
You need a nu type to bring out the full potential of the Mech.
Great review Andres, this is one of the greatest gundam ova as it is short and sweet with great animation, human story, and one gut punch ending that still felt to this day.
I have just finished War In The Pocket today. Ending really fucked me up
9:18 Are we forgetting Ramba Ral and Norris Packard? They were both good people in Zeon.
I too agree that it would be cool to see Chris return in a future Gundam series or mini series, perhaps situated sometime in between the One Year War & The Gryps Conflict, or perhaps during the Gryps Conflict? I could see Chris joining the AEUG to fight against both the Titans & Neo Zeon. Out of curiosity KaijuNoir, what sort of story scenario would you like to see Chris or any other surviving Gundam character embark upon for a new UC storyline?
Great review, Andres.
Great review, Andres. As someone who's never seen any of the Gundam anime shows, this video has just made me really interested in getting into the franchise.
Great video my man, especially love the "Shut up and take my money" G Gundam image. I'll be sure to check out more of your videos!
Thanks Dan, glad you enjoyed it!
Gundam 0080 took place after the One year war of 0079 U.C. In the early in the year of 0080 U.C. hence the title for an ova that took place during the events of the original Gundam series the title was Mobile Suit Gundam:The 8th MS Team .
Christian Blanchard You didn’t watch the OVA then. This series takes place in December 0079, right before the one year war ends. In the last episode, you can see Al’s dad reading a newspaper with a headline saying the war was over with a peace agreement as of January 1, 0080.
@@doop408 I watched it back when it aired on toonami so I'll admit I was mistaken...
YOU ARE ONE OF THE BEST REVIEWERS I EVER SAW. why you no make more gundam stuff???
Thank you very much! I don't review Gundam media often for two reasons. A) I'm mostly as Godzilla/Giant Monster UA-camr and B) It's a lot more time-consuming to watch, analyze, and edit a 40-50 episode television series. It's pretty much why I've focused on two OVAs so far for my scripted reviews ha ha. Anything larger than that is saved for podcast-style reviews. I hope you'll still enjoy my other works. :)
I agree with the review and hope that they release a blu ray as you mentioned the OOP complete set is extremely pricey. I'm currently watching a 1992 VHS fan sub based on the original Laserdiscs (complete with vintage commercials for toys and whatnot). Thanks for posting a bit of nostalgia (I had to dig through a few boxes of tapes to find the buggers , but it was the effort despite the wee scan lines that come with ancient film formats).
You have to admit, the zakus are cooler.
Cough cough, Jesta...
Zaku, Z'Gok, Hygogg, Kampfer... so sexy
Gods, I remember that trailer...I think that was the first time I saw Gundam on TV proper (I missed Wing)
16:02 Bruh, where can I get that version of the Alex... God damn.
Hard lessons in reality.
Kampfer and "heavily armored appearance" don't go together. The thing is lacking any skirt and joint armor, the damn thing is made of paper.
It wasn’t meant for normal combat though. It was supposed to run in and do as much damage as it can, and then run out. The only reason it wasn’t shot down before it met the Alex was because the Scarlet Team sucked as pilots.
This is a good review. 0080 is most definitely a classic. Just one thing I've noticed about a few of your reviews. You have a tendency to give away a huge chunk of the plot. Like, you'd spend 5 minutes summarizing the events of the first act, more or less. It gets a little spoilery at times. I fell into that trap when I wrote an essay about Gundam Unicorn, when I basically described the entire first episode before actually beginning my analysis.
Thank you for your feedback. While I try to be as spoiler free as I can be, I think it's essential to bring up certain plot points from later in the story in order to give a full assessment of the characters. If I'm going to say something is good or bad, I need to provide concrete examples in order to back up my points.
KaijuNoir Well I do agree there. You do bring up essential details, which is good. I'm still actually new at reviewing. I have a buddy who's been teaching me about how it works, and I showed him one of your reviews, and he stopped 5 minutes in because he said "I don't like this review. He's basically just telling what happens." I asked him to give that video a rewatch. I did watch some of your Heisei Godzilla reviews, and I don't where I stand with what he said, but people watching would probably feel no need to watch the first third of the movies because you basically explained them. I could just be finding fault where there isn't any. I don't know. Lol.
That's ironic that your friend thought that my review was just me explaining the whole story because personally, I hate that format. I've long since grown tired of people like the Nostalgia Critic and other similar "reviewers" who take their audience step-by-step through the entire plot and essentially provide commentary or jokes (mostly jokes). I mainly go over the first act of a story so that I can help people who have never seen the film/series get caught up so that when I go over my points my audience will have the proper CONTEXT to understand where I'm coming from. It would be difficult for me to explain my thoughts on characters like Bernie and Alfred if you don't know who they are, where they came from, or how they met. Also, given that this was my first Gundam review and most of my subscribers are Godzilla fans, I needed to provide MORE context to explain the basic premise of Gundam.
KaijuNoir I can understand that. I personally think your reviews are good though.
KaijuNoir I also appreciate you spreading the joy of Gundam. That's my favorite franchise.
I ordered the dvd but only episode 456 came in it
ppft, you mean Christina MacHottie.
Kinda weird, but ok.
Waiting on a Blu-ray release :/
Mobile suit Gundam 0083:stardust memory please
Wish you still made gundam content
Gundam alex is prototype for amuro 🤔??
Yes, it was not finished by the time Operation Star One started so he never used it.
@@holden_7597 instead of not finished, it was heavily damaged at the christmas day of UC 79 (i don't know the exact date, but it's likely happened near christmas day). So amuro can't got it on the operation star one at 30 december. But amuro got his gundam improved with magnetic coating which increase the performance of rx 78 2 gundam
excellent review
Do Gumdam has a toyline?
+Kyle Naversen There exists a TON of Gundam toys of all shapes and sizes. Most of the attention is put towards the model kits. However, if you're looking for articulate figures similar to SH MonsterArts/FigureArts, I implore you to check out Robot Spirits's line of Gundam figures.
Thank You, I'll check it out.
where I can see it?
It's available on Blu-ray from Right Stuf. You can get it on Amazon for $30.
What's your favorite franchise then?
Godzilla.
This... makes me so sad :(
This review is for toy fan Only, it goes great length to discuss the robot models, the fantasized mech battles. The review did no justice on discussing character development, the plot lines, it barely brushed on those topics. The reason this OVA stands out is certainly Not because of the robots/gundams, or the animation. This is timeless because the characters, it's all about the characters. No one decides to watch this series because he wants to see new-type, there're better alternatives. Thanks for missing the point.
Oh, fuck off
I don’t know, this has some of the best fights in Gundam
For opinion this show should rename mobile suit zaku.
Yeah... no... I need escapism. 0080? 2/10. However... Christina Mackenzie is bae as fuck. 10/10
wtf why is mothra at the end of this vid lol
Because back then I used to tease my next review at the end of my videos. Plus, I primarily focus on Japanese monster movies and was in the middle of a retrospective on the Toho films of the 80's and 90's.
cool. nice way to promote vids. keep up the good work man!
Thanks man!
Alfred may be the most naive character I've ever seen. I know he's suffering from separation anxiety over his dad and is desperate for a father figure, but I see this kid turning out to be seriously bad news in one way or the other. He's already got deeply buried resentments built up that are the basis for a classic supervillan type. What got into Ben to think he could take on Gundam, knowing it destroyed their top of the line Zaku with a single bullet lobby is beyond me. His sacrifice was stupid, not noble. Why not find redemption by joining the feddies and sticking around to be brother to Al. The video is a poor replacment for what his presence could have done to keep Al on the straight and narrow. Dad ("I can't find any towels") doesn't look like a strong role model. If there were a follow up, I can see Al becoming another Char.
Time was limited. They had the nuke coming at them. Bernie has a thorn in him that the only cure is to challenge the Gundam head on where every one didnt give him any encouragement other than the 11 year old boy. This is why this film is so epic in my book. very emotional, if they have gone with your plot, it will loose out the essence of the screen writing entirely. This is much better then the recent Star Wars Movies IMO. But I do respect your POV.
halodoomplayer Bernie's sacrifice was the OPPOSITE of meaningless or a waste! He gave his life in an effort to save the innocent colony from being nuked and completely destroyed, and since he didn't know that the warhead was stopped there was no way to inform him and his mind was made up. He protected Al and did his best when nobody believed in him and I know I'll miss him.
