People seem to have taken to Fitzcarraldo these days, but Aguirre will always fascinate me. Makes a great double feature with Apocalypse Now, and a reading of Conrad 's Heart of Darkness beforehand.
This Film is the closest thing to a Documentary of a 16th Century Expedition we'll ever get. It's also somehow a Comedy in the funny sense not the dramatic sense. I have seen it 4 times now and give it a 8/10.
Seeing this in a theater in the late 70's was one the truly awe-hammering film experiences of my life.
This is not a film. This is an experience. A very hypnotic one, at that. 🎥
It's an awesome film, and also features a fantastic, hypnotic, proto-ambient soundtrack by Popol Vuh.

"Kinski was in particularly confrontational form throughout, throwing violent tantrums and rages each day."
It would be unusual if he wasn't.
This may be what I need to finally break into the BFI blu ray set on my shelf!
That Herzog set is the best value for money boxset I own. The English versions are good too if you don’t want to do subtitles.
A mesmerizing and otherworldly film, maybe Herzog's best
love this film depressing captures the actual events I read about...
Is like watching a documentary from the 15th century
16th*
I honestly think that watching Herzog struggle like Job while making Fitzcorraldo in the documentary "Burden of Dreams" changed my life in some way.
Aguirre, Wrath of God is actually a documentary into how Kinski spent his spare time.
adding to my watchlist thanks.
Aguirre and Sorcerer, my fever dream double feature.
