I'm hearing a lot of alternatives to paint thinner here. DEFINITELY keep sharing if you have more ideas! I'm sure that could help a lot of artists out there. Thanks everyone!
At the recommendation of another artist, I have started using Citrus Essence Brush Cleaner by Chelsea Studios. It can be pricey to find and order at times, BUT it works just as well as mineral spirits AND smells sooooo much better. This is important to me b/c my "studio" is also the office/guest room right off the kitchen.
Hi Chuck, I use to work with and represent some artists in Toronto etc. One of my long time friends, gave a tip. It seems to work too. He would clean his brushes but then let them soak a bit in fabric softener! Wow eh! I thought what a great way to keep them toned and soft. Better than dried up brittle and frayed. Hope this helps somebody else too.
I have really been enjoying your tutorials and timelapse videos. I teach elementary art and paint at home with acrylics and have been nothing short of inspired by your realistic style and techniques. You motivate me to become a better artist and teacher. Thank you!
Great idea! I currently use a pickle jar, and I think adding the screen would work perfectly. The pickle jar lid is easier to get a water tight seal compared to a paint can.
wow this makes cleaning a lot easier! the biggest reason for me not to paint with oils most of the time is because of how hard it is to clean the brushes lol but now i will do that. thanks for the video!
Chuck! You're great, and you bring details close for us to see how to do what you're teaching. I NEVER THOUGHT to make my own can. I stopped using oils and alkyds because my small studio seemed to forbid most of the ways I tried to clean brushes. I literally stopped using oils because I never thought of making such a can. What a cool practical invention! Thanks. You're the best teacher online!
CHUCK BLACK you are AWESOME!! I took your advice on purchasing the #12 round blender paint brush. I have been using if for blending the edges of my ocean waves when I’m trying to get a soft blurred effect. It’s been a life saver and my new favorite brush!! Please don’t ever stop doing what you’re doing. I’m a huge fan! Thank you! Thank you!!❤️
Thank you so much Debbie, means a lot to me! Awesome to hear, I just ordered more of those today as well :) nice to hear it's working out great for ya!! You are most welcome and I certainly wont
Chuck Black Art Oh wow! You responded back!!! I feel like I’m talking to a celebrity. Haha! You’re one to me anyway. ;) Your videos are so great and I love how down to earth you are. I’ve been binge watching them over the last few weeks. You are one of the inspirations for starting my own channel. So thank you for that as well!!! Have an amazing day!!
Really good way to save on paint thinner. I usually wipe my brushes well and use awesome from dollar store and rinse well lay on paper towels to dry. Works very well.
I'm new to oil painting & made two of them today in glass salsa jars. I wish I could share my photo with you. I did share your video on my Pinterest page to help others. Thank you for your time in teaching your followers.
Great idea! Also you could make a strip to drop over or bend over the side to take off excess liquid like painters use for professional painting. You can use cat litter to fill up old cans before you put anything in your trash. Our city doesn't recycle latex paint and that is what they recommend doing to old unwanted paint is to pour old paint into pan with litter, then throw litter away. Mineral spirits can be strained also. Great video. Looks like it would be handy for acrylics. Thanks!
This is super useful! I don't paint much, but I've always wondered if there was a more efficient way of cleaning brushes. I'd always take them to my sink and clean it all out there, but this seems way more efficient and probably also cheaper in the long run.
I’ve used store bought options to clean my brushes before and have been disappointed. Going to try your method. Thank you for this easy to follow video !!
Chuck this is invaluable info I loved it knowing how to clean oilpaint brushes is one reason i havent transitioned from acrylcs your so sweet and likeable so genuine thank you !!!
You will like it much! Just be careful with spirits. The are very toxic. Once i get very sick from intoxicating with white spirit. Worked till late and forget it in my room for the night.
Sir plz upload videos more frequently We just die in the wait of your new videos because every video of yours brings an even more better artists in us. Thanks Thanks for every video-cum- guidance. Thank you
Thank you for suck a great tip. I bought a couple metal lock container , I like the make your own. I was wondering how you dispose or what you do with the towels with gambel whipped on?
A art class I took said that they just use dawn soap and water. The spirits just about killed me the smell. I had the container covered even but it was the cloth I used. Now I won’t use any of them even the order free. Soap and water has been a life and lung saver!! Also use walnut oil for thinning! 👏🏼👏🏼
Let's face it every thing about painting is Expensive, so when you come across a cool hack to save some Money it is well worth looking into. I still have brushes form the early 70's when I first started that are still in good condition! I finish cleaning my Brushes with Ivory Soap after rinsing them in the Mineral Spirits or Paint Thinner, just scrub the brush into the bar of soap until you work up a good lather then working from the ferrule out squeeze and slide the lather and other residue out of the bristles and repeat until totally clean. Paint tends to migrate up to the ferrule, so getting that cleaned out is very important if you want to save your expensive brushes!!
So you don't need to wash them with soap and water after you clean with Gamsol? What about if you condition them with one of the products you showed at the end? You would need to wash that off with soap and water, right?
Do you also use the gamsol as a paint thinner for painting? or would you rather use linseed oil? and do you worry about the paper towels catching on fire? Thanks great video!
How do you paint with oils if it is going to be as much as a week before you can return to continue painting? You may have covered this in one of your videos and I may have missed it. Thank you Roger Granat
Hey Roger, So I oil out the previous section that dried before I start again. Then I work on tying the fresh wet paint and blending it into the dried section. I try to complete each area I'm working on before I step away for that much time, but if I don't I just leave it alone and eventually come back to it once the entire canvas is covered. Then I'll paint a second layer to try and finalize any incomplete sections
Hi Chuck I have just started using oils and im trying to find the best product for cleaning. This is very helpful but i cannot find a product called mineral spirit Is it the same as odorless thinner ?? Thanks xxx
Yes i'm really having problem with my oil paint brushes. You know what i did was soaking them in regular vegetable oil to prevent them from drying. LMAO
Superstition I suppose, they claim that they manufacture all their products with artist's safety in mind. I try to do my best to be safe in my studio so I figure why not, blick has good deals on it and I hardly go though any at all to begin with.

I use the Silicoil jar and I like it alright and the pink soap to condition my brushes. And I love your method too! Great info.

Thank you thank you thank you! I switched from oil to acrylic just because of the cleaning process. This was so informative. Thank you!
Ditto, and although I've fallen in love with GOLDEN OPEN acrylics, still my DNA wants to return to oils. I think this may open the door for me.
@@GlennGuillorySFO Also take a look at water-mixable oils, such as Cobra, they're regular oils but clean up with just soap and water.
I have used this method

You can use baby oil as it is safer.

You should patent this idea and one day a week make as many as you can in a day and sell them on your website. Thanks for the idea! Cheers : )
The home made is defitivly the best choice. I used to filter my dirty mineral spirit from time to time in another jar . greetings from germany
Awesome!
How/where do you dispose of the can when its full?
i have the same question
Is water base oil paint a much difference with traditional oil based oil paint?
Thanks for answers, everybody.
If you mean water mixable oils, then, yes. They can be cleaned with just soap and water just like acrylics.
OK. Buena idea.Gracias

Do you use mineral spirits for synthetic brushes? Or just natural bristle brushes?

Anyone have information on where to buy little paint cans like that? Live in the U.S. Thanks
👏👏👏👏
Very,,,, tank you🙏
Thanks. But how often you change Gamsol in the can?
You don't need to change the Gamsol in the can. The paint sediment falls to the bottom (below the screen) leaving clean clear Gamsol at the top.
Very helpful.. thank you. I'd like to try oils but am hesitant because I dont want to end up with a bunch of toxic chemicals and flammable rags 😛
Try laundry detergent for oil, dawn also works to get oil off of animals.
Chuck, why do you use Gamsol rather than odorless mineral spirits? That stuff is like $14 a gallon versus Gamsol.
