Hiya man... I did a kit Harley Benton LP and Jazz bass.. Mainly for a bit of fun, and for something to test out new skills that should hopefully end up with a somewhat playable instrument.. and thats what I got out of both of them.. But you have to enjoy that process. It's far cheaper and easier just to buy a finished instrument and the quality will be better,, you just wont be able to point at it and say 'I did that'. 🙂

Hey Lamb, nice catching up :) I agree, I think part of me believes there should be more tiers to kit guitars, so as your skills grow you can get higher quality, but the kit should not be more expensive than the correspondent finished guitar... Basically, the same that Martin offers with their acoustic kits

I've never understood kits as something you'd want to do more than once or twice. They make total sense to see if you like working on guitars, learning how to finish, etc. But after you've had the "easy mode" experience, to me it always made sense that you'd graduate to building more of the parts yourself.
Do you see yourself moving on to more scratch builds or do kits scratch enough of that building/diy itch? I'd be curious to know how you think about it.

Those are some good points, and I am running into some of the limits that kits inherently have. Pre chosen specs and such. However, right now, I feel like there are still things I can learn with kits that I would struggle to either with finished guitars or scratch builds. Particularly with regards to finishing , which is a discipline in and of itself. Maybe it's building on training wheels, or modding on hard mode. I see quite a few builders that graduate too soon and you can tell as their custom guitars fail to meet factory quality and they ask for custom shop prices. Or have to pay someone to do finishing for example.

@@MrRafaztar Makes sense to me. Maybe it's time for me to try a kit, I've looked down on them in the past but I definitly don't have the skills or tools yet for the builds I have in my head. Gotta start somewhere!
