  • I’m back with another underrated vintage lens: the Industar 50-2!!! This funky 50mm f/3.5 pancake lens punches well above its weight (it weighs next to nothing on my camera) with its ability to capture crispy sharp images with a velvety vintage look and feel. In this video I intend to find out - is this wacky lens the ultimate value pickup for a “nifty fifty”?
We’ll explore Huntington Beach Pier, California USA, one of my favorite spots for a photography adventure, and then later on step into the photo studio to try some portraits. Join me for a long walk on the beach - we’ll put this pancake lens to the test with some street photography, action shots, an aperture/bokeh test, landscapes and portraits.
Special thanks to @JaaeKash for providing the music for this video!

Hey Nate. You should also check out the Industar 69 28mm 2.8. It is based on CZJ tessar lens design as well. But it is even smaller. It is drained for a half frame rangefinder camera, so now it can be used with any digital mirrorless APSC camera.

Loved the video and you got some great shots! I use this lens on a film rangefinder, it's everything you say it is, remarkable quality. Thanks for posting!

My Leica Barnack is on its way so got to find the smallest lens to the camera pocketable. Man I’m so glad to have come across this review. You took a lot of nice video and still shots. Yeah it is crisp like bacon! Thanks for sharing.

The Industar 50mm f3.5 has been one of my favorites for a decade now. I also paid $20 for it, and the shipping from Ukraine cost the same amount! Total investment was $40 with shipping. I love the colors it makes, and the bokeh is always very smooth. Currently it's attached to my EF adapter that has the autofocus chip - which allows me to use the focus dots in my viewfinder. Super handy lens, and definitely worth every penny I paid!

Yours has trouble focusing to infinity because it is an Industar-50 not an Industar-50-2. It was equipped with an m39 mount (not to be mistaken for Leica l39) that was specifically designed for the flange distance of Soviet rangefinder cameras. This issue was later rectified with the switch to m42, and most model 2 Soviet lenses adapt fine.
Fortunately, you can fix this by buying a 39 to 42 adapter and mounting it using a m42 to EF adapter; however, in order to perfect infinity focus, you will need to file 0.3mm off of the total flange focal distance.
I only use earlier silver m39 mount Soviet lenses with the red P coating, and this was an issue with all of them before adjustment.

Here is a handy tip. Take the rangefinder version of this lens, or a Jupiter 8 f2/50mm, and then use it on a DSLR. You will get a wonderful macro lens, but the down side is that you cant focus in to infinity.

I was recommended this lens to get into uv photography. Is there filter threads on it?

There are filter threads, unfortunately I can't really tell what size (but definitely cartoonishly small).

@@natekates Thanks, after doing some more research, I found it's somewhere between 33-35mm. So I went with the old duct tape and cut pill container method🤣

Filter thread is 33mm. I bought a lenshood at aliexpress.

There are sellers in Ukraine selling this lens used but look almost new for $15 and $15 shipping from Ukraine, hard to beat.

On a Nikon, this lens will not focus to infinity (referring to the black M42 version of course). This is because of optics not build quality. In order to get infinity focus, it is necessary to use an adapter with a built-in lens (that extra piece of glass). This lens will also benefit from using a lens hood, but that's another subject.
