Even if this show was made for adults he wouldnt be killing a lot of people because it was just not needed and it wouldve been risky as he didnt want to be exposed as a bender. Amon is such a great antagonist because looking at the perspective of non benders you can finally see someone making the world an equal and better place but to benders you can see this villain stealing away their identity
Rewatching the first scene especially is horrifying. I've never sat through TLoK, but assuming that was his first demonstration, it was a great way to show how scary this is. Just watching the lightning fade to fire -- the bending form most associated with life and vigor -- then be snuffed out completely. It's like ripping out an important piece of someone.

I just want to kindly disagree I love both villains but I think that Zaheer was more scarier than Amon and the reason I say this is because Amon would take your bending but Zaheer would literally take the air out of your lungs basically killing you which to me is scarier. 😨

They had a great villain in Amon. It's too bad the lack of funding and hurried/bad writing gave him a bad end. What they should have done is expose him as a villain indeed, but as part of the red lotus, working with unalaq and indirectly vaatu, with his power to strip bending real and derived from the spirits (Vaatu).
I wish we got to see more of the blood and water bending. He was incredibly fast for his limited show, so imagine how an Amon who's not holding back, would have been a much better water bending antagonist than Unalaq.
They have so much depth already, with complete backstories and insights into the villains psyche. Like when we see it flashback to Amon's childhood with his abusive father. I would rather see a series on the comics, like The Life of Ursa

This is what trauma does. Ideally, Amon could have served the good and removed the bending from criminals. But his beliefs got shaped by his dad forcing them and ruining bending for him in general so his ideal world was a world with no bending at all. You can never get that back, it is forever behind you. Kinda scary imo.

So her ending her life right here and there would hurt for her closed ones but would do the world a real favor.
I'm a little bit late, but Amon is using bloodbending to block chakra located in the forehead. As it was established in ATLA, you can't bend when one or more of your chakras is blocked.
I like to think that if the creators were originally approved for three series for the Legend of Korra, Amon would have been the final villain instead of Kuvira.
Yeah, I mean (spoilers in case people care) (also, long comment incoming) This was touched on by Toph in season 4, how the villains of Korra were not black and white villains like Ozai. Ozai was a genocidal warmonger whose only goals were power and glory. He had no empathy for problems that didn't concern him. He screwed up his children to suit his own needs. If any other Avatar had been in Aang's shoes, they would have had no trouble killing Ozai for his inhumane actions, and Aang's struggle was more about what kind of person he held himself to be as a pacifist. But as Toph says, each of the villains in Korra had a positive message behind them. Amon wanted to fix the inequality problems caused by benders like those in organized crime (and like his father). Unalaq's main goal was godlike power, but he was actually right about the world having lost touch with spirits. The Red Lotus despised oppressive governments and desired freedom from under their rule. And Kuvira saw the disastrous effects of the power vacuum created by the Red Lotus' actions and initially sought to create stability for her people. They were completely out of balance, though, as Toph explains. They took their messages to the extreme, often taking an "ends justify the means" stance and/or valuing personal gain. Their followers and opponents were forced farther and farther apart into polarized enemies. Korra was out of balance too. She began the series essentially not genre-savvy, naively believing that she was going to be facing "bad guys" (as she says in the first episode) like Aang did. She was ready to take a side 100%. But she gets taken off-guard by the moral ambiguity in the situations she finds herself in. By the end, she has overcome her naive worldview and has enough experience to empathize with Kuvira despite her terrible actions, talking her down from her desperate last ditch efforts to win. This leads to Kuvira's surrender. Episode 1 Korra would not have been capable of this type of balance.

Well it's kind of like a psychological execution. Or essentially crippling someone or ripping out their soul. Idk if you read the series His Dark Materials, but characters tend to have daemons, an individual's soul who lives outside a person's body and take on the form of an animal, who shapeshifts throughout childhood and has a permanent form once that person reaches adult form. One of the rules is that humans can never touch another person's daemon as it's considered extremely violating/taboo, akin to touching their soul, and is comparable to bending.

It doesn't make any sense that it's called taking of bending or removing of bending. All Amon could do with his bloodbending at best is block bending, but not take it...
I wish they explained more in depth the technique he used to get rid of the bending. He uses waterbending somehow, I think he blocks off a specific part of the brain that allows you to bend, but the reason Korra was able to airbend was because each element is controlled from different sections of the brain, and with airbending being the only bending Korra could essentially do with the other elements blocked off, it makes sense somehow. Amon obviously researched this but because airbending was likely not something as widely known on a biological level due to Tenzin and his kids being the only existing airbenders at the time, he couldnt account for taking it away. It makes me believe that if he tried to take Tenzin's and the kids bending then it wouldnt have worked because he hasn't done it to an airbender yet.
What they should have done is make him not a water/blood bender. They should have referenced the guru from ATLA and instead have him as some kind of guru that understands what bending really is. That way he could still be a terrifying non-bender and still know how to control chakras. It could then set a new precedent for what is possible in universe. It would be a villain about equality through order and control. Zaheer should had then been introduced as the antithesis of Amon, someone wanting equality through chaos and anarchy. But thats my two cents.

While teasing amon in every books and then reveal amon in the final book.Imagine the effect of amon taking every bending of everyone korra knows and korra need to find a way to fight amon and then find a way to recover back the bending while also searching a way to recover back her past lives. Plus the conflict of the past book can really boils it in amons book.All the distrust due to past conflict will leave a huge mark for the avatar reputation and then amon lead the rebels.Hes just too good for such early arc

This was touched on by Toph in season 4, how the villains of Korra were not black and white villains like Ozai. Ozai was a genocidal warmonger whose only goals were power and glory. He had no empathy for problems that didn't concern him. He screwed up his children to suit his own needs. If any other Avatar had been in Aang's shoes, they would have had no trouble killing Ozai for his inhumane actions, and Aang's struggle was more about what kind of person he held himself to be as a pacifist.
But as Toph says, each of the villains in Korra had a positive message behind them. Amon wanted to fix the inequality problems caused by benders like those in organized crime (and like his father). Unalaq's main goal was godlike power, but he was actually right about the world having lost touch with spirits. The Red Lotus despised oppressive governments and desired freedom from under their rule. And Kuvira saw the disastrous effects of the power vacuum created by the Red Lotus' actions and initially sought to create stability for her people.
They were completely out of balance, though, as Toph explains. They took their messages to the extreme, often taking an "ends justify the means" stance and/or valuing personal gain. Their followers and opponents were forced farther and farther apart into polarized enemies.
Korra was out of balance too. She began the series essentially not genre-savvy, naively believing that she was going to be facing "bad guys" (as she says in the first episode) like Aang did. She was ready to take a side 100%. But she gets taken off-guard by the moral ambiguity in the situations she finds herself in. By the end, she has overcome her naive worldview and has enough experience to empathize with Kuvira despite her terrible actions, talking her down from her desperate last ditch efforts to win. This leads to Kuvira's surrender. Episode 1 Korra would not have been capable of this type of balance.

@@Jupiter-T yeah l never understand the main purpose of Korra being the avatar. With all that going on she should might as well be a politician. Jinora however is written in a better way that defines the meaning of what its lie to be the avatar. Korra is too impulsive and emotional.

Well it's kind of like a psychological execution. Or essentially crippling someone or ripping out their soul. Idk if you read the series His Dark Materials, but characters tend to have daemons, an individual's soul who lives outside a person's body and take on the form of an animal, who shapeshifts throughout childhood and has a permanent form once that person reaches adult form. One of the rules is that humans can never touch another person's daemon as it's considered extremely violating/taboo, akin to touching their soul, and is comparable to bending.
Dude Amon and Vaatu are crazy villains, their skills are just like so sadistic and all that even make parts of the series very sad and terrifying

It doesn't make any sense that it's called taking of bending or removing of bending. All Amon could do with his bloodbending at best is block bending, but not take it...

I wish they explained more in depth the technique he used to get rid of the bending. He uses waterbending somehow, I think he blocks off a specific part of the brain that allows you to bend, but the reason Korra was able to airbend was because each element is controlled from different sections of the brain, and with airbending being the only bending Korra could essentially do with the other elements blocked off, it makes sense somehow. Amon obviously researched this but because airbending was likely not something as widely known on a biological level due to Tenzin and his kids being the only existing airbenders at the time, he couldnt account for taking it away. It makes me believe that if he tried to take Tenzin's and the kids bending then it wouldnt have worked because he hasn't done it to an airbender yet.

I haven't gotten that far yet but Naruto and Avatar are very similar.
What they should have done is make him not a water/blood bender. They should have referenced the guru from ATLA and instead have him as some kind of guru that understands what bending really is. That way he could still be a terrifying non-bender and still know how to control chakras. It could then set a new precedent for what is possible in universe. It would be a villain about equality through order and control. Zaheer should had then been introduced as the antithesis of Amon, someone wanting equality through chaos and anarchy. But thats my two cents.

Well actually Amon just blocks their bending chi so hes technically not removing their bending he is just blocking the pathway but aang can fully take the bending power away for goid
hes been release too soon, imagine book 1 became the final book, heck just imagine if LOK books are rearranged like spirits, change,balance and then air. While teasing amon in every books and then reveal amon in the final book.Imagine the effect of amon taking every bending of everyone korra knows and korra need to find a way to fight amon and then find a way to recover back the bending while also searching a way to recover back her past lives. Plus the conflict of the past book can really boils it in amons book.All the distrust due to past conflict will leave a huge mark for the avatar reputation and then amon lead the rebels.Hes just too good for such early arc

Incase you didn’t know, LoK was originally only supposed to be one season but it did well enough it was renewed. That’s why it ends with Korra just kind of getting the avatar state

I havent really watched much of Korra, but i think a hard impact scene couldve been a water bending healer having their bending taken away (begging to heal their family or beloved before it gets removed) would've been nice. Give Amon a little hesitation or show some mercy.
