IMPORTANT NOTE: some of my viewers have pointed out a couple of great Beatles books that definitely would’ve made at least my honorable mention section, and I forgot about them completely! The first is the Beatles by Roy Carr and Tony Tyler from the mid 70s, a great book that I love and cherish and forgot all about it! The second is the Beatles Anthology book itself. Another great book and done with the Beatles blessing. And the third one is the great double set by Chuck Gunderson called Having Some Fun tonight! I featured Chuck’s books in a video a few years ago and they are fantastic! My bad. So many books and I missed a few. But they are all worthy of honorable mention, at least. Take care, Matt .
Thanks for the shout out man. Awesome list there. I have about 2 big shelves worth of Beatles related books, yet you showed several I have never seen or heard of. There are so many out there. The Beatles Forever is a very special one to me as well. My first softcover of it fell apart from overuse. One of the first Beatles books I ever got was another Shaffner book that he cowrote with Pete Shotton called The Beatles Lennon and Me which was the paperback reissue of the original John Lennon In My Life. That one has tremendous sentimental value to me. I spent so many hours rereading that thing as a teenager in the 80s. The Recording Sessions and Chronicles books are both amongst my favorites too. I'm also very fond of All Those Years Ago by Barry Miles. I have to admit to having spent a good bit of time reading a couple of the more notorious books of Beatles lore those being The Love You Make by Peter Brown and Stephen Gaines and The Lives of John Lennon by he who shall not be named. I have that same paperback of the Hunter Davies book. I also would give a shout-out to The Beatles On Record and The Beatles as Musicians. Both great reads. Thanks for doing this video and thanks again for the shout out.
Nicholas Schaffner’s THE BEATLES FOREVER, Roy Carr and Tony Tyler’s THE BEATLES: AN ILLUSTRATED RECORD, and Ron Schaumburg’s GROWING UP WITH THE BEATLES were and remain three of my very favorites from growing up in the mid-1970’s…
Damn!!! I missed the Carr and Tyler book!!! Love that one too! Shoot! I’ll put that in my top 10 for sure. My bad, missed it on my shelf! Great call Jeff! Cheers 🍻
Hey, Matt! I can remember having The Illustrated Record, Growing Up With the Beatles, the Man Who Gave the Beatles Away, and a few pocket-sized paperbacks that didn't add much to the Beatles' history. I may have also had the George Harrison short bio, "Yesterday and Today" (an ill-advised title to be sure). Anyway, I was 15 and figured I knew everything there was to know about the Beatles. Then one Saturday morning I visited a book store with my dad and saw "The Beatles Forever" in hardcover. I flipped through the pages with amazement. So many pictures I'd never seen before. All those releases from other countries. And so many more details on the Fabs than I'd ever had before in my "expert" head. I pulled out my wallet, hoping I could find $20 in cash to buy this wonderful book. I got it and a year later, like you, I picked up the paperback version - to get a one-page update on 1978! I've read the whole book cover to cover at least three times and certain sections I know I've reread dozens of times. This book marked the first time I read about the post-Abbey Road meeting where John and George tried to convince Paul to give George more songs per album. Nicholas Schaffner was a terrific writer. I highly recommend his books on Pink Floyd (Saucerful of Secrets) and the British Invasion.
"Growing Up With the Beatles" was a favorite of mine, too, along with the Lewisohn book on the recording sessions, "The Illustrated Record," and I always liked your #10 book. In fact, a small local bookstore had this in their front window for months, and when I received it as a Christmas present (1976?), I really enjoyed looking through it. Another fun book, which I had and wrote all over and lost years ago (but recently found at a used book store, unmarked) is "The Compleat Beatles Quiz Book." It is a small paperback (128 pages) with all kinds of questions and fun stuff, with many photos. Its introduction simply has a photo of the Fab Four, with one sentence: "The Beatles need no introduction."
Matt, I have EVERY one of your Top Ten except the Spizer book. That 1975 Octopus book was one of my first (you and I are about the same age) and I was so excited by it. Schaumberg's Growing Up With The Beatles (definitely one of my favorites - that poster!). And of course, Schaffner's The Beatles Forever...I remember just devouring that book. Stokes' The Beatles with the Warhol cover I bought at Barnes & Noble on 5th Ave in NYC and trudged it all over the city on that day trip. It was a heavy book for a kid to carry around all day! This was an awesome video and brought back lots of Beatle book hunting memories for me! Great job!!
I LOVE the fact you delineate between “favorite” and “best” - if we could all do that for a great many things, we could talk about many things without shouting each other down 😳😘
Hey Matt, I had both the Shaffner & Shaunberg books, but I would have to say that my favorite Beatles book is The Beatles Are Coming, followed by The Beatles Recording Sessions. Take care...
Nice choice Mat !! I enjoyed that ! I am happy to say I have all the books you covered except The Beatles Gear. And yes, I even have that Golden Book thanks to you ! I really don't have a list of favorites, If I was to pick just one, I love the large Anthology book. I even waited outside a Best Buy to get the book with a T-shirt (still unopened ) I actually have three Anthology books for some reason. I always say with collecting the Beatles, 1) the music. 2) video 3) Books 4) anything else. Catch you next time !
Great list of books Matt! I have to admit that I have not heard of a few of these. Most of them I do have or had in my collection. I did have the Geoffrey Stokes book when I was younger but no longer have it. I love all of the Bruce Spizer books, especially the Capitol books and the Beatles on Apple. Mark Lewisohn’s books are essential, especially the Beatles Live and the Recording Sessions. The Beatles Forever and All Together Now were my go to books as a teenager. I also love Recording the Beatles which came out in 2010 and You Never Give Me Your Money by Peter Dogget. Thanks for sharing. Take care!
Fun video/picks. I like your story for #2. I probably haven't read much more than 10 Beatles books (and that includes some solo stuff), but I have a small collection and always love it when I get to it. My favorite is probably the Anthology book because (1) its their own words; (2) its what got me started (in my college years) on actually reading the Beatles (apart from the books in the records/CDs).
Hi Matt. I own 3 of your top ten books and the first hardback I bought is the "Octopus" one, in 1975. I also own "An illustrated record" by Carr and Tyler, and the "Anthology book". As you say, everbody has his favourites, they're not always the best ones, but those that we are linked to sentimentaly.
Now I know which book I got for my 11th birthday, the hardback book you showed with Paul wearing the pink suit! I had it for about 30 years or more and finally threw it out because it was falling apart.
When John was so tragically shot and killed by that crazy horrible piece of sh*t and he had been a big Beatles fan since he was 11 and John had been his favorite Beatle, I was 15 and 8 months old, and I had been a big Beatles fan since I started collecting their albums at age 9,and I had every album by age 13, my mother bought me a great hardback big Beatles book for my 11th birthday that I had for about 30 years it ended up falling apart so I threw it out. But on December 8, 1980 something made me put dried flowers I had in my room inside that Beatles book, and I put a piece of paper with the date and time which was around 9:30 PM inside the book too. At around almost 11:PM something also made me play I Am The Walrus over and over again. The next day after I learned of the horrendous news of John's horrendous insane cruel murder by that one time big Beatles fan since he was 11 and John had been his favorite Beatle I opened this Beatles book and I saw that I had placed the flowers right near John's face in a group picture of The Beatles in India! When I was 13 a nice 15 year old guy gave me the Hunter Davies only authorized Beatles biography, he was a big Beatles fan but his older brother was even a bigger fan. I used to read that book for so many hours at a time and then I'd look up at the clock and it was 4:am. It's a very good book and Hunter is a very good detailed writers he makes you feel like your right in the room with everything he's describing. He wrote for The London Times.
Funny you are doing this when I'm preparing a 10 best of for the "Show us your Beatles Collection" facebook group I'm in. Same age as you of course Matt so many of the books you listed I have as well. I DO have that Octopus book, it was one of the first few I bought and as for Beatles Forever I agree completely, it will certainly be in my ten. I am surprised you didn't mention the Gunderson books as I purchased them after your video and will put them in my 10 as a pair. Obviously all of Lewisohns books are great, but I only have the Sgt Pepper book by Spizer. I've been trying to get that Capitol records book but they are very expensive on ebay now. Keep Beatling Matt
Thanks Daffodil… yes, someone else pointed out to me about the Gunderson books. I love those books! I just completely overlooked them by accident. But they would definitely be in my honorable mentions for sure. Just slipped by me. My bad. Thanks for the mention. Take care. Matt😎🙏
Hey, Matt! Great list you made here. 75-80% of what you display here are on my Top Ten list as well! If I were to add to such a list a book you may not have or have heard of, I completely and earnestly have to mention is Chuck Gunderson’s Some Fun Tonight! The Backstage Story of How The Beatles Rocked America! Unfortunately this book which boasts two successive volumes is now listed as out of print, but it can be found. Search through Google and ye shall find! Chuck has thoroughly researched those years and created THE definitive presentation of their touring years in the US! Photos, essays, newspaper headlines and clippings and personal info is contained herein! Chuck researched the most appropriate paper to use in the book. Is it expensive? Oh yes, but is it worth it? You betcha! This bloomin’ book is its own unique experience to read, peruse and enjoy their journey through the states! My copy is volumes 1 & 2 in a slipcover and it is gorgeous, my friend! You may want to research it before you commit, but boy, I tell ya, this set of books is rockin’! While reading, you may want to put on one of the Hollywood Bowl albums, Shea, Washington Coliseum to get you properly in the mindset of the fans who attended these shows. Okay, I’ll now shut up and let you check this out in your own time! All my very best to you, Matt. I hope I see you in the future! Ciao!

My Favorite Beatles Book was a pop up Book . It was called The Beatles story , it had the words rock ups at the top and musical pop up book down the bottom , i believe it came out in 1985 , it had from memory about 5 carboard pop ups of the Beatles from different periods of thier career, my mum bought me a copy of it and i would have it layed down flat on a dressing table in my bedroom opened up to different pages with different pop ups . I guess its somthing of a novelty book and a bit of fun but worth checking out if you havent seen it , i also loved john Lennon's books In His Owen Write and A Spaniard in the works
On April 9th a new book by Peter Brown and Steven Gains called All You Need Is Love: The Beatles In Their Own Words. Can you possibly review it eventually? They are the authors of the 1983 best selling book The Love You Make. This new book has already become an Amazon best seller several months before it was released.
@@matthewstreet1961 Have you ever read The Love You Make by the same authors? I don't remember now if you reviewed it in this video because I watched it about a month ago or so.

They are the authors of the 1983 best selling book The Love You Make.
This new book has already become an Amazon best seller several months before it was released.
Thank you, I didn’t know about it! I’ll look into it! ❤️😎🍻🙏👍
@@matthewstreet1961 Have you ever read The Love You Make by the same authors? I don't remember now if you reviewed it in this video because I watched it about a month ago or so.
Read it a long time ago. They were kind of negative if I remember right.
