I’m a successful project/construction manager seriously contemplating a career switch to a quantity surveyor. I subscribed yesterday after binge watching most of your videos , interesting to see this one today!
I see many comments mentioning the stress of a CM job and this resonates with me , although seeing the finished product after all the teams hard work has always made it worth it.
I have just always been keen to get involved in the commercial elements of projects and have been quietly developing my quantity surveying knowledge

Site managers are paid more, but have lots of responsibility, but your their for the life of the project, if your contracting you can earn serious amounts of money but it's not all about money its about if u can come to work happy. QS is more office job, whereas the site manager will go to the site and inspect health and safety, guild the workers on how they should build what their still is such as bricklayers ect. Both are reasonable choices. Project managers manage the whole project from start to finish (including pre and post construction) while construction Managers manage a specific aspect during the construction. If you want an overarching view, project management is the way.

With all due respect to CMs, an experienced QS can take on the role of a CM but a CM can't do vice versa.
The reason is because QSs branch into 2 streams, the Contractor QS (CQS) and the Private Practice QS (PQS). QSs that have experience in both streams have a more in depth knowledge of the industry.

      Hi Sundeep,
What we'd suggest is to identify universities with links to RICS as it would be easier to gain chartership this way. In regards to whether its necessary to be in civil engineering to do an msc; the answer is no. You do not need to be in civil engineering to do an msc. What you will need is a previous recognisable degree.
It might be useful to contact some universities and ask what the requirements would be to study an msc in their institution.
      I hope this helps.

      Hi Ntsika,
These figures are based on an annual salary. Would be lovely if it was monthly though!!
Are you looking at becoming a QS or a Construction Manager?

      Thank you for the reply.
I am a Construction studies student. At my University you choose when you're doing your honours degree which route to follow. But I think I am leaning towards the CM side but really going to try and get both titles.

If you're working on a FIDIC contract, we have a series dedicated to FIDIC that may be useful. Like all careers, the two main components to success are knowledge and experience.
We are here to help you with the knowledge part of that equation :)

How to be a quantity surveying for the adults on london uk

    • @Metroun
      @Metroun  3 роки тому

      Hi Hani,
We'd say there are 3 different routes
      1. Obtain a degree and apply as a graduate
      2. Enter an apprenticeship programme as a Quantity Surveyor for a large company
      3. Whilst working for a construction company, be given the opportunity to become a Quantity surveyor. You would then do a part time degree whilst working as a QS (the company would usually sponsor you through your studies)
      Hope this helps!
      Thank you for the question

I take it that you're a construction manager. Is that assumption correct?

Quantity surveyors are still on demand yes. We actually have a really fascinating video named "is it too late to be a Quantity Surveyor" that should help.
