In this Film Courage video interview we ask Script Doctor, Writing Coach, and Author Daniel Calvisi what confuses new screenwriters the most. Daniel believes it's capturing voice on the page, choosing words that convey tone and style while developing their unique voice. He explains this isn't easily quantifiable, emphasizing that teaching someone their voice is difficult.

Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/425k5rG
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/3WEuz0k
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv

Hey guys, that's me in this video. I wanted to correct a couple of mistakes when I misspoke, if you'll allow me... 🙂 1) At 1:44 I meant to say "second nature" not "second hand," as in, I can help a writer work on building their unique voice until it becomes natural to them. 2) At 4:42 I meant to say "Internal" rather than "External" when I talk about the second engine/line of action with, for example, the protagonist reuniting with their spouse. Thanks for listening.
Appreciate you speaking. I kind of don't have intentions for becoming a writer( I want to direct) but I've started writing a short film so a buddy and I can produce it and I direct
Thanks for those clarifications, Daniel. And thank you and Karen for an excellent discussion of a difficult-to-articulate (or quantify) topics - tone, style, motivation - that are crucial to great screenwriting.
@@Respect2theFallen You don't have to write to direct, but it's very hard to find great material on your own, so I'd suggest you work on your screenwriting craft. At the least, you will learn story skills, which of course will help you as a director. As a director, you not only need to understand how to direct actors and come up with great shots, but you need to understand pacing, which will ultimately be executed by editing but begins on the page. Imho. Good luck!
Very educative and interesting, thank Yall.

What are you struggling with the most in regards to your screenwriting?
People tell me that I describe too much but I feel it’s barely enough
getting the ideas and plot actually written out lolol
Re-read. I write. I come back. And every time, I have something to change. And sometimes I feel like In waisting my time.
Making the protagonist the main character. They tell me other characters have more conflict than the main.
I want to know how he feels about studio Ghibli storytelling.
@dotails I can't say I've seen enough Miyazaki films to really comment upon his story structure. Does he not use standard structure?
Uncle Ry-Ry said Pizza or Chinese take-out... thanks for sharing.
This isn't the same guy who couldn't explain engine last time & was directing us to his website is it cuz this guy explained it pretty well with no catch 😂🤣😂
