    I love how at the end of this episode the camera is set up by the open window as Joel and Ellie head off. The window looks a lot like the one on the start up menu of the game which seems as if it was another slight nod to the game, every little detail like that is just so brilliant to see and this is certainly the best game to screen adaption i have ever seen, great reaction and hope the rest of this excellent show keeps both of you coming back for more👏👍

    Is there an Emmy category for Best TV Episode? If so, this will kill. I can't remember another episode of any television show that racked up my emotions like this did. The moment ten years in that you see Frank in the wheelchair becomes the scene where we realize his fate is degenerative, after which we watch Frank tell Bill what he wants for his last day, to the Max Richter-soundtracked montage of that day, their marriage in a world where same-sex marriage was never legalized in America, to the mirror-image meal right down to the same wine from the day they met, followed by the way it awakens Joel's sense of responsibility and grief, and I could go on. It's a masterpiece.

      Watching this episode, it doesn't matter what anyone's opinion is regarding same sex couples. This storyline was a beautifully poignant love story. The writing and acting are superb, and Linda Ronstadt's Long, Long Time was perfection for me. The chorus has been repeating itself in my head since I first watched this episode about a week ago.

  • @Dimetropteryx

    Love the details in the episode that they don't call out directly. Like during the raider attack, Frank doesn't wake up until the flamethrowers go off and the gunfire starts. Bill chose not to wake Frank when the alarm went off. He deliberately sneaks out of bed (he's still in his underwear) and out of the room, so Frank won't get in harm's way. He's out in the middle of the street, because he's tried to put as much distance as possible between himself and Frank. They don't simply call Bill a protector, they actually show him thinking and acting like one.

      It's a TV show, story and character development are ALWAYS more important than "logic". Bill is risking his life to defend Frank, that's his purpose. And Frank is taking care and healing Bill, that's his purpose. And it's also an important moment, it shows that even if Bill was a grumpy survivalist "paranoid schizoprenic" he now actually trusts Joel to take care of Frank if he dies.

    Just to point out something you may have missed (based on a comment Samantha made at the beginning of the episode), but the infected don't eat. Well, the fungus does consume their host from within over time (that may have been what you were referring to), but they don't feed on anyone else. Their biting of others only serves to spread the infection.
    The Bill and Frank story is so different in the game, and all the interaction between Ellie and Bill found in the game will be missed by those who never play the game, but I love the change. It provides one glimmer of light in the darkness that is the rest of the story.

    • @toddwynn3397
      @toddwynn3397 Рік тому

      That is one of the logical drawbacks to this iteration of "zombie". If the infected doesn't eat, they will die. If the host dies, they are no longer useful to the parasite.

    • @DavidGowers
      @DavidGowers Рік тому +3

      @@toddwynn3397 I always just looked on it like with actual mushroom-type fungus. Like, the longer the Infected exist, the more of their body the fungus takes over and kinda replaces (for lack of a better word) the host bodies to a degree - like we see as we progress through the game - and then kinda changes to getting its nutrients from the ground, like when we see them all lying on the ground in the second episode.

    • @toddwynn3397
      @toddwynn3397 Рік тому

      @DavidGowers Even if the fungus is able to draw nutrients from the ground and sun, the human body needs certain things (protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, etc) to maintain muscles, bones, and vital organs. These nutritional needs aren't available in the soil. I still loved the game and am enjoying the series, but how the host can survive for so long has always been a plot hole for me. I've also wondered how they get super powers, but that is a different discussion.

    FYI on Frank. I saw a reaction to this episode from a Medical Doctor. He said that judging from the symptoms and Frank's evident knowledge of what he had, even though there was no equipment or doctors to give a diagnosis, was probably MS or ALS both of which can be hereditary, which would account for his knowledge of what his condition was through familiarity due to family members suffering from it.

    In the game, Bill and Frank were implied to be in a relationship (it was not express though), but it ended badly. In-Game Bill tells Joel that caring for anyone is a bad idea. In both the show and game, they make it clear that Bill and Joel are similar men, but in-game Bill is really an unhappy person and more of a cautionary tale for Joel: here is what you might end up as if you isolate yourself and refuse to care for anyone. In the show, Bill is a positive mirror if what Joel could be if Joel can get past all that he has lost and embrace a few people worthg protecting. People say this episode is not directly related to the story, but I think it is as a vicarious character study of Joel. Bill says he was _glad to watch the world die_ and, in effect that Frank became his one exception. To Bill, Frank was the single person worth protecting. Obviously they are building to Ellie becoming equally important to Joel.

    • @TBRSchmitt
      @TBRSchmitt  Рік тому +11

      Thanks for the recap! I haven't gotten to Bill yet in my replay of the game so that's an interesting comparison but I agree, this episode completely translates to Joel and you can immediately tell the change it has on him with how he communicates with Ellie

    • @Saberwolf2112

      it's very explicitly stated they were in a relationship. bill literally tells joel "he was my partner"

    • @Pandaemoni
      @Pandaemoni Рік тому +2

      @@Saberwolf2112 He does say that, but a lot of people didn't take "partner" to mean "romantic partner" as much as "business/smuggling partner." I completely agree that if you associate that with the earlier reference (at the start of the level) when Bill says that he used to care for someone who he calls "a partner" then it seems clear, but not "express" as it would have been if Bill had "boyfriend" or "husband" something similar. Frank's suicide note also on the face if it doesn't seem very romantic, he seems to despise Bill. There are ways to interpret the suicide note to refer to a romance as well, but there is room for interopretation and it got past a lot of players.

    When Ellie was reading the letter from Bill. I thought about "True Detective" Marty asked Rust if he was a bad man. ------ Rust said yes. ------ The world needs bad men to stop even worst bad men. ------- And that is what Joel and Bill epitomise. ------ The need to have bad men who will stop the truly vicious people of the world as we see in Episode 4.

    • @sheilaburns8977
      @sheilaburns8977 Рік тому +1

      I've watched the entire series and I never thought of Joel as a "bad man". Yes, because of the horrific world in which he lives, Joel has to sometimes do what we consider in our world to be "bad", but Joel is not the instigator of bad situations, he reacts and resolves bad situations. From what I've seen in other apocalyptic worlds, people are the worse and they tend to make the worst come out of a "good" person. Love to Joel and Ellie.

    Single greatest episode of television in a decade. I wept like a child when I watched it for the first time and I cry whenever I rewatch it or watch people react to it. "You'll crush all of these up. Put it in my wine. I will drink it. Then you'll take me by my hand, bring me to our bed. Then I will fall asleep in your arms." Bills tears after kills me every time. "I'm old. I'm satisfied, and you. Were my purpose." Such a fantastic line. I can't listen to Long Long Time by Linda Ronstadt w/out tearing up anymore.

    I think when the '80s music started playing at the end of ep1, that's when they died. (Since it was Frank's idea and I'm sure it was Tess who set it up.) I like to believe that Bill sent it to get Tess and Joel to hurry down there so they can find the letter and get the supplies he gave them, and to tell Joel what he needed to say. I am kinda glad Tess didn't see Frank dead. She would have been devastated.

      No, the show tells you that the radio is set up on a timer. If Bill doesn't reset it every few days, it automatically plays an 80s song to signal danger (i.e. Bill is killed, incapacitated, or unable to get to the radio). It would have gone off days after Bill and Frank died.

    I just dont get it why people so hateful and pissed off because of this episode, because cmon.. this is pure, toucheful story about relationships with really important people of your life. And it is extemely compact in terms of screen time, but without lack of meanings. It has some minor elements, like Bill in the middle of the street there, yeah. But overall, jeez, it was like a whole drama movie instead of single episode. And it so perfectly loaded into whole show story. This is perfect example of extremely important life principle "just live your own life and do not disturb others lives". Fundamental thing about life, about yourself and your beloved ones.
    Last of Us is one of my few favourite games overall (from 90s to nowadays) and this episode is just wonderful.

      We hated it because it retconed two characters from the original story, and, like many other things in the show, broke the world building just to have a side story romance that had nothing to do with the primary characters. That combined with the many plot holes, and the show's creator outright admitting he inserted this episode to 'trick people into watching a gay romance" just to appease his ego tends to leave a sour taste in the mouth. Especially when we enjoyed the original well told Story.

    I have been watching these out of order (not sure why), and I realised after watching your reaction that it was only a few days they have been dead. I think that was the meaning of the Depeche Mode song being broadcast on the radio at the very end of episode 1. That was an 80s song and 80s, as Ellie worked out, means something is wrong. Basically it was signallling that was the day that Bill and Frank ended it all.

    • @jhornacek
      @jhornacek Рік тому

      No, Joel says that Bill had the radio set on a timer, and that if he didn't reset it every few days that it would automatically play an 80s song to indicate something is wrong (i.e. for some reason Bill couldn't make it to the radio to reset the timer - either because he was dead, captured, or something else). So the radio didn't play that song on the day Bill and Frank died - it happened days later.
