In this fifth piano tutorial Brett talks about Bach’s Prelude in C Major. Specifically, he talks about how to memorize the left hand by keeping “one eye closed”.
The meaning behind this phrase is as follows: If you are willing to not be too perfectionistic, then you can easily learn the left hand to this piece in a few minutes. That is, we will leave out a couple of details that will allow us to see bigger patterns in the music. But don’t worry - we will learn all of the missing details in the next video on this topic.
We first divide the piece up into 4 groups:
1) The first “C” group, measures 1 to 20. We call this a "C" group because it begins and ends with a C as the lowest note.
2) The “F” group, measures 21-23. We call this the "F" group because of the sheer number of F's in this group.
3) The “G” group, measures 24-31. We call this the "G" group because the lowest note in every measure of this group is a G.
4) The second “C” group, measures 32-35. We call this a "C" group because it contains Cs almost exclusively (there is only one exception).
Then we “close one eye” and leave out a couple of details in order to memorize each of these 4 groups.

I see you're making progress. That's great. Just get in touch if you have any questions
Excellent analytic tool. There that pattern sits before our very eyes and it never occured to me to look for it much less see it. It allows insight into the internal consistency of Bach's methodology. It's a way to get out in front of the task of learning and memorizing the 48 preludes and fugues.
Thanks for your comment. Indeed, there really are patterns all over the place in the WTC (and elsewhere!) just waiting to be seen! And they sure do help the understanding along if you can find them! All the best to you in learning and memorizing preludes and fugues!
I'm a beginner who is learning this piece, so I love these approaches!
😃 Great. We made these tutorials exactly for people like you. It's wonderful when they help.
