From what I can see, roy is just literally marth with training weights on, does roy excel at literally anything that marth doesn't have? he just seems weaker if pretty much every area. off stage, punish, aerials, maybe his up b is different with the fire but not stronger. like his only upside is the weird fire damage he has on some moves. Someone give me a real strength of roy's or just tell me zain is clowning with a character that looks 50% worse. I mean I know hes clowning, but just give me any positive roy has compared to marth, cuz the fire isnt even enough to call it a positive.
Its near impossible to marth killer a roy's recovery, also, roy can reverse up b and kill puff, game and watch, pichu, and kirby(on yoshis) instantly.
Also, on FOD and Yoshi's story, He can down tilt reverse up b on top platform on medium-light weight characters and get an easy stock.
Roy also has a strong juggle game on fast fallers, along with his side b, roy's side b is better than marths. his side b 2 down breaks cc. Furthermore, roy maintains marth's grab range, along with a percent more in the throw's damage. (look it up, roy up throw 5% and marth's is 4 %.)
Roy is far from the same character as marth, while marth is a more air oriented character, roy is more grounded, and most of his combos stay on the ground.
The only variable roy matches marth in is movement. He's got Marth's speed and excellent dashdance hurtbox contortion. Zain's ability to positionally bait and pluck opportunities out of defensive positions are 2nd to none. Most players simply can't reliably beat Zain in neutral. A lot of players seem really thrown off punishing/edgeguarding Roy as well (this is why Kurv lost for instance).
Roy's fsmash DI mixups also trip up people who are only visually familiar with marth combos. This usually gets Zain a couple of stocks before good players adapt.
Zain's just a monster at neutral, and he makes ridiculous things happen with Roy's seemingly limited punish tools. He's on another level.

@@theonemeleeplayer2138but you are not mentioning any of Roy’s weaknesses and why he’s even considered a low tier in the first place. Several of his moves that you mentioned are insanely inconsistent.

Shooting a laser as you run toward your opponent is not laser camping.
I could counter your statement by claiming that Zain was "ledge-stalling" because he retreated to ledge a few times during this match.

Magi has to be my favorite falco player. And zain has to be one of my favorite marth/Roy players. Next to sethlon & luchables.
Took me quite some time to realise Magi is trans… always asked myself how a girl can be that good piloting the bird… that explains a lot.

I’ve played Melee (on and off) since I was 5 years old and I love the game. Something deep inside the deepest parts of me just can’t help but hate the way Magi plays. So defensive and only offensive when it’s really safe or when there technically/theoretically the chances are higher of the offense working and then just continuing that cycle. It’s not refreshing at all and it feels like there’s no substance or creativity involved. It’s like they’re just playing a numbers game and like they love crunching numbers more than they even love Melee. Idk

That's literally what the Neutral Game is. All top level players do that.
It's impossible to be a top level player without mastering the neutral game.
Approaching when it's unsafe doesn't make you a "cool" player. It just makes you an idiot.
You'll notice that Zain does *literally that exact same thing*. He ALSO doesn't approach unless it's safe.
She wasn't even playing particularly defensive in this match. Game 3, for example, she was pretty much attacking non-stop. It's frankly kind of hard to get more aggressive than that.
Your blatant misunderstanding of the game as a whole is stark enough. But when combined with your misgendering of Magi despite her pronouns literally being visible for the entire match, it's kinda begs the question if you perhaps have a different reason for disliking her...

If Magi's pronouns were listed she/they or as they/she, then both she/her and they/them would be appropriate. But that isn't the case. Her pronouns are she/her.
Many binary trans folks get disphoric about being referred to by they/them pronouns. And the reason for this is simple: many transphobes use they/them pronouns as a way of avoiding gendering someone correctly without having to explicitly call them the opposite gender.
They/them is a good default option to use when you aren't sure of someone's preferred pronouns or when you're talking about someone whose gender is unknown. But that isn't the case here. Magi's pronouns are literally on screen for every single second of this match.
If someone's pronouns are very clearly visible, not using them is nothing more that willful ignorance. It's not an accident.

At the time this match was played, Zain was pretty widely considered the best player in the world. He arguably STILL is the best player in the world (though Cody is giving him a run for his money). Switching to Marth and winning the match wouldn't prove anything - everyone already knows he could win with Marth. When top players use an alternate tag like this, it's usually because they are not taking the tournament quite as seriously - they just want to prove how well they can play a low-tier, and don't care too much if they lose earlier than they would if they played a better character.
