Put it in BEFORE your water gets too bad. Also takes several months and it should be anchored near a waterfall or movement of water so as to not get stagnant. It works but it has to be started early on. It only treats algae and not dirt or grime.
Hi, I just added the same product to my pond. How ever, my water is not as dark as yours. Mine is just not crystal clear. A few things to take into account. 1. The instructions say that it should take about 4 weeks to see big results. 2. It says to NOT allow it to sink. If it does, take it out, let it dry (while using the other one) and place it by running water while partially out of the water. 3. Your Pond seems pretty shallow (at least where the pump is). I have the same filter (900 gallon raised pond) and the nozzle is submerged until the fountain arm. So, it might be moving sediment from the bottom. The water in your pond doesn't really look green. It seems more like coffee, which it might tell me that the bottom is being disturbed. I have mine on top of two bricks. 4. You definitely need a lot more of plants (even for aesthetics). I would add some nice Elephant Ears and even grass like plants. I would even add Grape Vine plants around the waterfall. Water Lettuce (which floats) would also absorb nutrients (if that's the case) and multiply fast. Lastly, I would raise the walls, add lining and make it deeper. The layout is very nice. It just doesn't look deep from the video. Much success 🙂
Thanks for he info. In the center its about 3 feet deep. It has a ledge on the side. Yeah, I definitely need plants, just didn't know what to get. The former owner let a lot of leaves settle at the bottom. I just drained and refilled it a month ago, so hopefully his season will be better.
I'd say the hornwort you put in there will help, takes time though. I think you have runoff from the surrounding ground. Once its planted up around the pond it should clear.
I only use barley bales for algae. In the spring I use an additional bacteria additive. However, I have significantly more plants and a good water flow.
I've read something that said it doesn't actually do anything and you are wasting your money to buy it. I'm nit sure one way or the other, but it didn't do all that much for me.
The same barley straw I got from Amazon, did not work and still have algae in my fish pond. What is your alternative that is safe for fish to clear green water? The bog does its job, but cannot keep up with the growing algae especially with no shade over the pond.
It can be used more as a preventative before your water gets murky looking. A better approach is add beneficial bacteria. eventually it will clear up the water and you may even need to pump out half the water and refill it to help clear it up.
I thought its more effective to place it as a filter that all the water has to go through. I am not surprised it didnt work by just tossing it in the pond. Try again.
@@SeanDIY i did more research and i found you can also weigh it down to the bottom. I also found out it does not remove existing algae. So it needs to be in the pond over winter and into spring to prevent algae. Never knew that.
I just had it floating around the pond. Maybe I should do something else but it seemed from the instructions that you just drop the barley straw ball into the pond and make sure it doesn't sink. It never went into the filter.

Great information you are sharing. I've heard mixed reviews so if it works for some, Great.

Yes it says wait 4weeks
So I will wait and see what happens
Let me know how it works out for you.
Beneficial Bacteria will eat up the leaves and such. Add canned around the edge of the pond, they are thirsty plants.
It does work better than my UV but I put it into a secondary waterfall filter because it seems to need a flow of water.
That's good to know.
I'd say the hornwort you put in there will help, takes time though. I think you have runoff from the surrounding ground. Once its planted up around the pond it should clear.
Thanks for watching and sharing your insights. It's greatly appreciated.
That's definitely silt, dirt that flowed into your pond. Need more ground cover near edge
And add bacillus bacteria.
I only use barley bales for algae. In the spring I use an additional bacteria additive.
However, I have significantly more plants and a good water flow.
I just added a bog filter and some plants in that. Check out my video on that update. That is finally clearing my water.
Barley pellets are working for me right now! Big Change in a week!
Thanks for the heads up. I'll give it a shot.
What brand ?
@gilbertianrueda I just got the generic Amazon brand. It was 2 bales for around $8.
I've pond salt works well. If you've got plants don't use as much, an it good for your fish
Hi, it will not kill existing algae, it prevents it from growing

I haven't found much that has helped. Plants is what most people recommend. I think keeping the water cooler will help as well.

I've done that in the past. Tha KS for the suggestion.
I used it my water is very clear
Was it clear before you used the Barley straw or did it clean your water? Also did you just let it float around your pond or how did it work for you?
I thought its more effective to place it as a filter that all the water has to go through. I am not surprised it didnt work by just tossing it in the pond. Try again.
I was told it was supposed to float around, but I did both.
@@SeanDIY i did more research and i found you can also weigh it down to the bottom. I also found out it does not remove existing algae. So it needs to be in the pond over winter and into spring to prevent algae. Never knew that.
@@arg6193 The directions say it needs to float and stay on the surface, so weighing it down may be a bad idea.
@@SeanDIY oh yes it said anchor to the bottom. My mistake. Penn State Extension was my reference.
Man people spending lile 10 dollars on a tiny bit of varley straw when you can just pick some up from any farmer fke free is crazy
Did it not work because it kept floating in your skimmer?
I just had it floating around the pond. Maybe I should do something else but it seemed from the instructions that you just drop the barley straw ball into the pond and make sure it doesn't sink. It never went into the filter.
Small bog filter. Enough said.
Thanks for watching and sharing this idea. I'm going to try to build one soon.
Nope, didnt work for me
I'd say results were mixed for me.
your pond doesnt look green , looks more dirty from particles
It was a bit of both.
U gotta have 65 percent shade. Or you'll never get rid of the algae I don't care what u do
Two pump filters and a bog filter, and it's gone.
Hell I got mostly shade a waterfall and pump and still can't get the algae under control smh this year is nuts it's crazy long
@@JohnSmith-fq7hj get a filter pump with a UV light. That should do it.
Dude.. that's really bad!!!
The barley straw or the pond?
