I owned a 3DO back in the day myself (was there for it day one when the pack-in game Crash 'n Burn was the only game available), and it was indeed a surprisingly great console with a solid line up of games. The console may have been a failure in the end, but the game library was not. Crystal Dynamics was a huge developer for the platform, and they would go onto even bigger things in the future. EA was also a huge supporter of the platform (not surprising with Trip Hawkins being the founder of the 3DO company and former founder of EA itself). It even was a beast for fighting games with Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo and Samurai Shodown.

Ordered a Mnemo russian 3do ode a few years ago, very sketchy informal transaction but the guy was awesome and came through, had similar pricing, and had more versions available - but with recent situations I was scared that something like this would become completely unobtainable. This is amazing to see! Need to get on the list for batch 2 as I have one last FZ-1 sitting unmodded...
If anyone is like me and wasn't thrilled about gluing the front fascia piece to the top, a little extra disassembly on the drive assembly can let you take out all the plastic bits and put those back in place so the fascia is mounted to the disc tray like stock. It does sorta block off the ports on the ODE but if you use one of the SD extensions that puts it over by the AV expansion connector it's not really a big deal. My FZ-1 looks completely stock from the outside. You'd never know anything was done to it until opening it up or turning it on.
The PCB looks surprisingly bare, I think most of my ODEs have a big chip on it, usually an fpga. Amazing that technology marches on and components get smaller.
I recently plugged in my FZ-1 after not using it foe years. The cd drive would not read discs. The read light would blink, though. It turned out that a small gear that moves the drive assembly back and forth had cracked. Because of this, the gear was just spinning in place instead of driving the assembly. This is supposed to be very common on FZ-1 consoles, and details on the issue can be Googled. I bought a 3d printed gear on ebay, and it fixed the issue.
My FZ-1 had the same problem, cracked gear. I found that the gear (and whole drive internals including the laser) are the same as an Apple CD 300i (2x SCSI drive) and used that to fix my FZ-1. I figure eventually that one will break too so it's awesome this ODE is now available.
This is awesome. After seeing that they came out with the Fenrir for Saturn I was wondering if there was something for the FZ-1 and sure enough, here it is. I don't own one myself but I have wanted one for the longest time. If only marketing would have kept up with this thing to have seen more releases, it would have made an excellent PS1 competitor. I see that it uses a Raspberry Pi Pico chip. AND also that you have the best version of D out there loaded on to this thing. I definitely want to do this using an extended Micro SD adapter to access the card from the outside unless they ship with the Pico W on board enabling Wifi and Bluetooth. FTP would be an awesome alternative.
One already exists, actually! Check out the "humble bazooka" store. Edit: I see you wanted it in the CD drive. The Humble Bazooka one installs hidden away in the FMV port hole on the side of the system. A CD door one will likely come soon, as awbacon says.

Mine slid off when rummaging through my consoles I had in storage years ago and now I cant find it 😟 Glad we have a new ode option for the 3do! Most people hate the 3do but I have nostalgia for them since I was lucky enough to have one in the 90s. Killing time, star control 2, ssf2 turbo, slam n jam, way of the warrior were my favorites. Way of the warriors controls sucked but it was awesome back when it released.

Finally got my 3do finished, now this is released. Recap Mnemo ODE Black Dog RGB Remote reset mod. Def a labor of love, and I have poured waaaay too much money into it. This system was my grail. I just wish there was a way to get that slick new UI on mnemo's board.
Not sure if this will help. When I got my rgb I did the 9 pin Sega Genesis 2 port, instead of the 8 pin. Then got a hold of a rad2x so it went straight to HDMI.
Hi there my 3DO wouldnt read the discs took it apart looked the drive was fucked put it back together for when i bought the mod tried it just outta curiosity and it worked was amazed as not techy at all
hi, another cool video, I also love my 3do, I have an ode (mnemo), back in the day I switch from snes to sega cd and finaly a 3do, even the snes have better games seen 3do was a trip to the future, some games where great but later where released for psx/saturn, hope some day I see a 3do core on mister!!! Some great games: road rash, return fire, gex, wolfestein 3d, just to name a few....I love the system and between jaguar, cdi and 3do I stick with 3do! Thanks for the video!
I had to get mine from some place in Greece last year, RGB 8 pin mini to SCART. It works great on my OSSC as well as the composite and S-Video connections (in 480i mode only)
Videogameperfection is the main website, their partner is in Greece. It says out of stock, but there’s a note that pops up on the page saying they’re in stock, so I’m not sure about the availability.
I don’t understand the 3DO sucks crowd. I purchased it on day of release and it is the only console along with the Colecovision to actually blow me away as it was so far ahead of all the other games at the time. Fifa and need for speed were played non stop for months. PlayStation and Saturn which I also purchased at release were only a slight upgrade and didn’t really impress me at all.
what's the point of the male / male usb cable? maybe i skipped over that comment. If anything wouldn't an extension make sense to have a female end hanging out somewhere to insert a usb thumb drive? so you can update / change out your games without having to open it back up again.
I feel like a 256gb SD card is about 249.5g of overkill to host the gems in the 3DO library. All jokes aside, this is really cool tech and hats off to the developer. One thing I'm not a fan of though is that it looks like you have to reopen the system each time you want to install a different SD card or flash drive. But to my original point, that shouldn't be a problem.
The 3DO is quite a interesting machine. Usual people like AVGN or tabloids like Watchmojo mock this thing, and sure this system was overpriced at the time compared to the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive and the Super Nintendo, but the 3DO had its own characteristics.
Incredible device, but man that price. That's double what I paid for my 3DO last year. I bought the Super System SD3 for my PC Engine for $180 on sale and not long after CD support for the MiSTer core dropped... and the MiSTer core is what I've been using ever since. I feel like a 3DO MiSTer core will be announced the day after I install this. The flash drive/sd card not being accessible is a huge problem. The only way I would be satisfied is if I was able to rig up the original drive panel to slide out of the unit and reveal a usb connection. Gluing it on is a complete no-go.
Its just a parts + time thing. These types of developments are time consuming. Plus the cost of goods on anything lately is just bad with inflation. The XPORT variant will be soon; that plugs into the expansion port so you don't have to mod the console at all
@@VideoGameEsoterica that's great, I would definitely go the XPORT route since my drive still works fine, but $350 is a huge hit. And you are right, things are absurdly expensive now. I bought my DE10 Nano several years ago for $100. I can't recommend it to most people because of how inflated the price is.
wow! just wow! Don't think ive ever seen a FZ1 strip down before. Saved this vid for when the internet goes down but ordered an FZ-1 ODE months ago that eventually shows up in Perth WA two years later due to supply chain issues. So many questions bra? Dude....you do talk a bit too fast sometimes like the squirrel on hoodwinked and im gonna either need to secure a translator box or have to manually separate the audio from the darn video using "format factory" then stretch the wav. file in cool edit 1995 to actually understand whats going on here man! Don't take this the wrong way please sir, you know i love you man, i really do....but i am Australian and you merrrikans have that accent i need to translate on occasion.... Chat soon, Jeff.
My laser started dying (the diode) back in high school around 1998 or so. It was only used a few times in the passing 15 years or so that my sister had it. When she gave it to me, I played it maybe 5 times, and it refused to read a disc ever again. I used an ohmmeter and tried adjusting the pots on the Sanyo laser to no avail, and a replacement laser is no longer available. If you have a 3DO that won’t read, it’s 90% sure that the diode died inside the laser. An ODE like this or the other one in Belarus or Russia is the only option for now.
I mean why’s it not working though? It’ll revive a bad cd rom “non working”…but non working cd FZ-1s just present with a black screen. Sadly so do numerous other problems. Crap shoot..but you might win!

It was the first console to play everything at 480i 8 years or so before the PS2. And most the US Saturn Library are hold overs from the 3DO. Saturn lovers need one too.
3DO sucks! Jk. While it was quickly surpassed a year or so after release, and while it didn't have a particularly large library of great games for my preferences, I did end up buying one around release just for Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. Worth it for that game alone? Probably not, but it was for me because it was the closest to arcade perfect you could get at the time. Also bought two of the Capcom six button controllers, and friends and I put hundreds of hours into that game, if not reaching a thousand. Plus, it still has what many consider the best theme mixes for that game. The 3DO also introduced me to Star Control 2 (amazing game) as well as Alone in the Dark (which I saw so much influence of when Resident Evil came out not long after).
@@VideoGameEsoterica Oh, I have, but the loading times on it were pretty bad, especially when you compare it to what you could play on the NeoGeo...which was pretty much the exact same guts they used in the arcade.

Do you know of any reproduction panasonic drive tray fascias or 3d print files to make one?
Mine slid off when rummaging through my consoles I had in storage years ago and now I cant find it 😟
Glad we have a new ode option for the 3do!
Most people hate the 3do but I have nostalgia for them since I was lucky enough to have one in the 90s.
Killing time, star control 2, ssf2 turbo, slam n jam, way of the warrior were my favorites. Way of the warriors controls sucked but it was awesome back when it released.
I dont know of any repros unfortunately but I will ask around
@@VideoGameEsoterica
Thanks!
I need to design a stl file for one but have had little time for anything other than work 😖
Was hoping someone else had lost theirs and designed an obj file already lol
You may need to be the one who does it!
I thought someone had made one. Maybe Robert of SNES23DO?
@@spawnlink Ill have to find his contact info and ask...thanks
Finally got my 3do finished, now this is released.
Recap
Mnemo ODE
Black Dog RGB
Remote reset mod.
Def a labor of love, and I have poured waaaay too much money into it.
This system was my grail.
I just wish there was a way to get that slick new UI on mnemo's board.
I still need to RGB mod mine
Not sure if this will help. When I got my rgb I did the 9 pin Sega Genesis 2 port, instead of the 8 pin. Then got a hold of a rad2x so it went straight to HDMI.
You didn't waste your money. Mnemo's board works great.
Just your opinion
@@VideoGameEsoterica It's not really my opinion. The Mnemo board works great. This Fixel one is great too. Can't go wrong with either one.
Hi there my 3DO wouldnt read the discs took it apart looked the drive was fucked put it back together for when i bought the mod tried it just outta curiosity and it worked was amazed as not techy at all
At least it worked lol
@@VideoGameEsoterica yeah i was over the moon lol
hi, another cool video, I also love my 3do, I have an ode (mnemo), back in the day I switch from snes to sega cd and finaly a 3do, even the snes have better games seen 3do was a trip to the future, some games where great but later where released for psx/saturn, hope some day I see a 3do core on mister!!!
Some great games:
road rash, return fire, gex, wolfestein 3d, just to name a few....I love the system and between jaguar, cdi and 3do I stick with 3do!
Thanks for the video!
you forgot Killing Time!
Now only if we can get the 240/rgb kits instock
Stock on those has been rough for sure
I had to get mine from some place in Greece last year, RGB 8 pin mini to SCART. It works great on my OSSC as well as the composite and S-Video connections (in 480i mode only)
Interesting. Remember where?
Videogameperfection is the main website, their partner is in Greece. It says out of stock, but there’s a note that pops up on the page saying they’re in stock, so I’m not sure about the availability.
I got my SCART cable at retrogamingcables in the UK
I don’t understand the 3DO sucks crowd. I purchased it on day of release and it is the only console along with the Colecovision to actually blow me away as it was so far ahead of all the other games at the time. Fifa and need for speed were played non stop for months. PlayStation and Saturn which I also purchased at release were only a slight upgrade and didn’t really impress me at all.
I don't either. Its just become a meme at this point in time
The issue is at least with 1st Panasonic console is getting a working CD player. I got one but I know it will fail any day now.
Eventually it will
what's the point of the male / male usb cable? maybe i skipped over that comment. If anything wouldn't an extension make sense to have a female end hanging out somewhere to insert a usb thumb drive? so you can update / change out your games without having to open it back up again.
Male/male allows for both popping a usb drive into the ODE for game storage AND update capabilities at this point.
Btw, what was all that “press eject button 69 times” thing all about??
gotta do it and find out :)
I hope someone reports on it, since I got the MNEMO unit, as long as it don’t fail, I’m not planning on buying another one. Let me know!!
There are brackets that you can print to extend it out. For me I’ll just load it up and close it like a tomb
@@VideoGameEsoterica Ah, the Corpse Killer method. Appropriate.
👍
The 3DO is quite a interesting machine. Usual people like AVGN or tabloids like Watchmojo mock this thing, and sure this system was overpriced at the time compared to the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive and the Super Nintendo, but the 3DO had its own characteristics.
Mocking it gets laughs/views. But there is a lot to love on 3DO
Incredible device, but man that price.
I actually installed my tray with the door and removed the sled with the laser, and the daughter board, and had just enough space for the MNEMO unit
That’s one way to potentially do it
wow! just wow! Don't think ive ever seen a FZ1 strip down before. Saved this vid for when the internet goes down but ordered an FZ-1 ODE months ago that eventually shows up in Perth WA two years later due to supply chain issues.
So many questions bra? Why did the optical drive fail? Is there no laser pot adjustment on this thing somewhere?
My USA FZ1 is very 2022 temperamental but still works...erm, sometimes!!
Chat soon,
Jeff.
I’m not sure why the drive failed. Worked last week. Booted up…dead. Probably dry caps. I’ll have to look into it
My laser started dying (the diode) back in high school around 1998 or so.
Yes sadly things will continue to break as they age
They have a ODE for 3-DO but not Sega CD? What's up with that? Way more people had a Sega than a 3-DO.
MegaSD exists. Diff concept, same result
Until a 3DO Mister FPGA Core turns up, this is the next best thing.
Useful even with a core to be honest
So what you're saying is, sign up for batch 2 and order a non-working Japanese FZ-1 off of eBay...
I mean why’s it not working though? It’ll revive a bad cd rom “non working”…but non working cd FZ-1s just present with a black screen. Sadly so do numerous other problems. Crap shoot..but you might win!
@@VideoGameEsoterica the first one I clicked says console displays video but will not load games. I wish US sellers were that descriptive.
Yeah that sounds about right
If you are looking for a Panasonic FZ1 3D printed mount for the ODE made by Fixel check our channel. Thank you
I’ll take a peek

Wow! Starting at $250 ! That's more than the console's worth! 😆👌
And it's basically at cost. The part shortage is real.
@@spawnlink no it isnt not even close
This isnt using anything thats apart of the shortage
@@primus711 Then you're saying Fixel is lying. I'm a member of the 3DO community and talk with Fixel almost daily and he has had to redesign the board because of parts shortages. The project was delayed for months in part due to it. I have the original designed board at arms length with a different soc. He had to design the board and software to work with 3 socs.
You should be paying more! 3DO demands your dollasr
so real...I cant even get certain arcade plastic connectors!
I'm not gonna join the 3do sucks crew. It had an interesting Japanese Library, It's region free, The Retrotink 5x processes its 480i Properly and It still has the best Super Turbo port.
How can I forget Naughty Dog's best game
Way of the Warrior
3DO has so much to love and people refuse to discover it
Not that I expect a response but I tweeted at Gavin and Rubin about the source and IP ownership. Would be fun to get the source.
After reconfiguring my Set up I have a ton of room and A 3DO/Jaguar are Candidates to fill that Space
3DO First!
It was the first console to play everything at 480i 8 years or so before the PS2.
And most the US Saturn Library are hold overs from the 3DO. Saturn lovers need one too.
sweet!!
It really is
😍
:)
3DO sucks!
3DO has a lot to love. The Samurai Shodown port is another legit awesome port to check out too
@@VideoGameEsoterica Oh, I have, but the loading times on it were pretty bad, especially when you compare it to what you could play on the NeoGeo...which was pretty much the exact same guts they used in the arcade.
Well sure disc vs cart, disc will always lose!
Don't forget to recap your nearly 30 year old system.
Only if it needs it. No leaking / no bulging / system works fine? I leave them as is
No not glue gonna be a lot of ruined 3dos if people start doing that
It should have just the sdcard slot on a cable the slides out on the cd tray
I would get a extender and make it that way very little cost and work to not destroy hardware
well if they glue correctly...thats just how I will do it. I will do a second video on an extender when I get the parts in
I see a raspberry pi ic
Yes there is a pi branded IC on board
Omg omg omg
haha excited much?
@@VideoGameEsoterica I am stoooooked! My buddy got an FZ10 so I will have to work with that cuz that's what he's going to sell me. These chips are spendy tho my friend. Oof!
Worth it
3D0 sux!!1!
this guy gets it
At least it's not a jaguar...3do sux!
lolol
Ugh fine 3DO sucks, even your 3DO knows it, and you’re trying to make it live against its own will
I am glad to see cat pen alive though.
3DO is GOAT
yes I found where I lost it
