part 5.children of violence was a pbs documentary made in 1982 about an east oakland chicano gang called barrio 60s and also a oakland chicano family the parkin family check out oaklands chicano cholo and lowrider culture of the early 80s this is what the town used to be like back in the days hope you enjoy....
RIP to Gato, Jerry , Arthur and Olivia Parkin, Lil ShortCake,Julian, Ernie, Mama Lee, Dancing Dan, Sapo,Smiley, Loco Twinkie and Smiley.

I think KQED / PBS should do a follow up on this family, where are their children and Grandchildren, are their lives the same, better, worse? Was there help to change their lives or opportunity to do so offered by the producers of this show to this family??

My father had an auto shop called Charlie's Auto on 64th and East 14th Street now called International but it will always be East 14th to the real Oakland Originals.. .. back to the story basically Bean and his brother dancing Dan ended up with alcohol and drug problems I don't know about the rest of the family but from talking to Bean back in the day the death of his brother by the police really affected his family in a very negative way
I really wish they would do a follow up too...

Yeah from what I heard: Jerry, Sapo, Dancin' Dan, Twinkie, Mama Lee and Olivia Parkin have all passed on unfortunately.
I lived this with all my homies. Real things happen in our lives for reasons. I am Mr vato Loco from the 60 s and most of my homies in this documentary are either dead or in prison. I had Julian die in my arms when bean and myself was going across the street and that Philipino shot Julian. Much love to them all. Gone but never forgotten

This was a great documetary, it was really well done. I'm suprised that no major distributer has picked this up.
that dancing in the street scene was great, kind of explained their plight- they just want to have fun and enjoy themselves, but when the institutions (police, schools etc.) "kick" you out, you have no choice but to "dance" and live in the streets.

You .live your life like you want to. Every body has a choice. I grew up in the middle of all these. In Oakland Ca .in the 1980s I could say that i been lucky to be alive. Whene ias 7 years old i witness a guy get stabe to death, it was around 9 30 pm. He was in his car dying i looked at him and he looked at me he didiint say nothing he died soon after. At 8 years old i witness a fight between two gangs i was siting down just talking to my girlfriend. And suddenly a gang member pull a gun oot and start shooting i saw a bullet towrds me but didint hit me it was near. That haopend back in 1983. I never had a dad or a mom. I always live with strangers but at 9 years old i was educated by this man, and he show me the way. So i decided that my life would be education and sports, thats what i did. I never had smoke , drink, or do any kind of drugs. In this present day im living in a car, long story how i ended here but it was not because bad choices , it just a money problem economic, but i believe in in the almighty and i believe in me i also believe that thier is good poeple. Things are going to get better i keep my life style i have my books on my side and my desire to be better every day that goes by. So we all have choicees dont get discourage, fight for somethimg that will benifit you and your family, not for a Gang, dosent make sense.to die for that. Thanks you all.
I mean you right that everyone makes choices but I have friend who were deeeeep into the life by age 9. think about that. you wanna, at age 9, disappoint your older brother, your dad and your uncle who all see this as a way of being a 'real man' ? everyone has a different experience, and temperament, so experiences hit them different. I have homeys who people would consider terrible ppl but I saw ptsd change them and no one helps bc they're seen as 'making the choice to be bad' Just seeing both sides of it cause some ppl see, we have a choice, and think oh well somethings wrong with me. but none of these kids were bad man. not everyone knows how to get out of stuff they're into by the time they grow up

This hits so close to home. I was a little kid when everyone in this doc were around. Lived all over Oakland. Seminary/Foothill, 23rd/East 15th, Fruitvale/East 14th, Jingletown. Add to this the Reagan crack epidemic ND the influx of Immigrants from Mexico, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Oakland was the wild west. Too Short said it back then. LIFE IA TOO SHORT. Yea i have seen 80 blocks to Tiffany's it kinda does have a similar style. the West Coast Chicano Version of it. the other Documentary was good and showed what the Bronx was like in the late 70s early 80s. as you can see Oakland was pretty wild back in the early 80s. Oakland has always had a rep.
Interesting and well-done documentary. I wonder if that guy who supposedly suicided was actually murdered by LE. It seems more than likely since he spit on LE and they beat him afterwards. It was common to "find" pachucos in the 1940s supposedly hung by suicide in jail cells in the L.A. area. They didn't commit suicide but few protested and challenged those claims. It's possible to believe that one or two did that at that time but this was pretty common in the 40s and maybe even after that.
Zero doubt that young father was murdered. He didn’t even last 12 hours in police custody. All while attempting to visit his young daughter…
thegreenblazer1 well bean from what i hear is still alive not sure if hes still in oakland . his brother dacing dan passed away in 2005 of natural causes . sadly to say mrs parkin died in a car accident on 880 in the late 80s like in 1988 or 89 . my homie twinkie is still alive and lives in sacramento now . but i seen this on pbs when i was a kid around the same time style wars came on pbs .style wars was a documentary about graffitti writers hope that helps ...

There is no such thing as Rollin 60s in Oakland. These guys happen to be from 63rd St, but it’s not affiliated with the Rollin 60s. The Rollin 60s are crip gang from LA that are are now all over country but crips or bloods have never been able to establish anything in Oakland except maybe a few Asian and Somoan gangs but definitely not Rollin 60s. Any Latino gang in that area is probably affiliated with Norteno or Sureno gangs now. Hope this helps you out a little bit.

There were SO many more murders back then, dangerous times the 80's were and I loved being a kid during it.

sad to say many of them are dead now many where killed by rival gangs and drug dealers back in the 80s . i personally know 2 fudes on this documentary that are alive and doing good but there kids are going down this sam path . i hear bean the main cholo on this film is still alive . it's all part of the vida loca ....
