I had my vitrectomy surgery 3 weeks ago and I'm honestly just so thankful to be living in this day and age with amazing doctors. The first week was tough, but things are only gonna get better from here on out. I'm scheduled to have cataract surgery in about 6 months, so I'm excited to see clear again. ❤❤ Speedy recovery and good luck to anyone going through the same thing. You got this.
How are you recovering from vitrectomy ? Have you experienced any complications since your surgery? My both eyes have PVD and full of floaters and considering vitrectomy is it recommended?
It is because you are very near sighted, you are at a higher risk for a detachment. Instead of a sphere, your eye is shaped more like a football and the eye tissue has to kind of stretch more to get across the area. The same thing happened to me and for the same reason. Wishing you all the best!
My husband is 68 and had a gas bubble procedure for retinal detachment, 3 days ago (March 9th 2024). He has to lie on his left side for 45 mins per hour for a week, to keep the gas bubble in the right place. His eye is very red and he has 3 different eye drops at intervals throughout the day. He is short sighted, has congenital nystagmus with associated poor vision. Thank you for this video and I will be watching the follow-up which I see is uploaded. All the best to you!
You are so young for this and such a great attitude about it. I am noticing so many young people having retinal detachment, so maybe I am lucky that I didn’t have detachment until age 66. I am extremely nearsighted (-8.5 in both eyes) and my right eye had detachment on March 8. A pnuematic retinopexy was done march 10 but failed and was repeated on March 30. But almost immediately after that I developed macular pucker which turned central vision into a dust storm, and within another week my retina detached again (same eye) but different location, so vitrectomy done on April 24 to remove the membrane and reattach the retina. The membrane removal partially restored my central vision but left me with metamorphosia (size distortion and wavy lines), plus as soon as the Hubble got small I saw signs of what seemed to be the same detachment, but it’s possible it was a 3rd detachment (scary thought). My retina specialist said he saw fluid but no tears or holes and might have to put in a gas bubble the following week. But I got scared and went to a different specialist the next day. He had an ultra widefield imaging system and immediately saw the fluid under my retina and a hole that was the cause. He injected a bubble to protect my macula and then did vitrectomy on May 16. That was my second vitrectomy in 22 days. I am still recovering at this point, and though I see no signs of detachment currently, I have many scary light flashes all the time. I hope that is normal. Note that neither vitrectomy used a scleral buckle, and both surgeries used a gas bubble, not silicon oil. But the doctor said if I detach again in sane eye, the oil would likely be used. I pray you are still doing well.
Hope your recovery is still going well. Had my vitrectomy 4 weeks ago, now just waiting for this bubble to go away. My experience was a lot different than yours, I haven’t suffered any pain due to the detachment or surgery. Recovery has been a mental struggle for me.
I'm 18 and I just had scleral buckle surgery last thursday on my right eye. My symptoms were flashes and a blind spot on the top left corner of my peripheral vision. Im glad your doing very well now it was a huge surprise to me as well when my dr told me lol. Best of luck to you

@Hippabellita1 Thank you so much. I'm so sorry you are battling this as well. I'm recovering now from the silicone oil removal. Coming up on 3 weeks. But now I need cataract surgery once it's healed. My vision is also not so good. Very blurry and center vision is distorted. Using 100% of my good eye. I really really pray your vision improves. It's a real life changing event to get use to. Nicole, this is so motivating to read. My eye doctor's office missed my retinal detachment, too . I called them and they said that it was the effect of my cataract problem, which it wasn't. Thus, I got finally diagnosed 2 months after the retina detachment had happened and had to wait 10 days for surgery, and nobody wanted and wants to give me a prognosis ...... I am 3 weeks post-op and very afraid to get my hopes up, but your comment gives me some hope. THANKS and I hope, all is good with you now.
Thanks for sharing your journey. This is super helpful for anyone going through the same procedure. I’m day three post op and my experience thus far has been identical including initially not being able to open my “good eye”. This is not a fun surgery but knowing what to expect from your experience has definitely helped reduce the stress of recovery. Thank you!
I am glad you are recovering and have regained your eyesight. I went through similar experience. On Black Friday of 2022 I woke up with floaters on my right eye; a co-worker had had floaters and was treated with steroids and eye drops. That Sunday I woke up, and could not see out of my right eye. On December 22, 2022 I had eye surgery and had to sleep face down and keep my face down for a week. I had a gas bubble to maintain pressure on retina and it took roughly 3 weeks for it to go away. I immediately development a cataract and had corrective surgery in October of 2023. I currently can see out of my right eye but the vision is a soft focus. I will need some further procedures to try and improve vision; I hope to regain clear vision but I can see. Good luck to you and everyone out there that goes through this experience.
I’ve just had the sclera buckle surgery 5 days ago. Vision is so blurry 😓 which is v upsetting especially that i was seeing prrfectly before the op.only had the very top of my visual field affected so my central vision was absolutely perfect. I got so anxious but thanks for sharing your experience.
I wish you a fast recovery! Is your other eye having problems with vitreous or retina detachment? I am 37 suffering from vitreous detachment. I woke up with a huge black eye floater and flashing. So i went to the ER they had an ophthalmologist look at my eye and said that I have vitreous detachment. It is scary because when it detaches it can lead to a retinal detachment. I have -7 myopia and high astigmatism as well. Thanks for making this video, i was afraid I was the only person under 60 dealing with this. Most people are elderly that have this happen.
Im on my 2nd week after vitrectomy surgery. Im 52 had no previous health problems other than nearsightedness with glasses for driving. I also only had blurred vision, no floaters no sparks or silver flecks.
Hi Lauren!! I just want to thank you for sharing your experience with your retinal detachment, I’ll be heading into my scleral buckle surgery tomorrow at St Mikes in TO! Your video has really helped provide a guide of what to expect and feel less alone in this as a 27 year old going through it. Sending you the best and all the good vibes as you continue your healing journey ❤
Ive had my retinal detachment for about 2 months now with no surgery I just got diagnosed 2 days ago by my doctor because he was fully booked (I scheduled an appointment August.22nd and barely got diagnosed October.20th) Im scared that I wont be able to recover my vision back now sadly but thanks for showing me how the surgery went for you im 23 and this happened to me as well.
Thank you so much for sharing. Used to be very nearsighted, has lasik, and then now have some floaters..and arcs of light…I am waiting to see a retina specialist at the moment. You are so brave! Thank you for being so brave about it!! How are you doing now?
Great video! Well done, you are so brave at such a young age. I went through the whole thing ( not a pleasant experience) a few monhs ago and it went very well due to a great surgeon in Edinburgh. You are so right that never take your eyesight for granted and really carefully think about wearing contact lenses. Mine was due to old age but you are so yound and I wish you well for the future. Best wishes
Hi. First of all I wanted to thank you for your video. I think it helped a lot of people to go through this process. I have several questions. Please if you can answer i know that everyone is different but it’s important for me. 1. When did you start noticing improvements in your vision after the surgery? As you said you saw things smaller than they supposed to be before surgery, when you started noticing the difference because I have the same problem. 🙏🏻Things are squeezed right now, but I am only three days after surgery. 2. I wanted to ask you how long did it take for you to be able to drive? Thank you for everything if you can make a video a year after surgery I think it would help a lot of people ❤️🥹🙏🏻
Hi! Vision after the surgery is definitely a long road - being about a 1 year later i still am not back to 20/20 but i would say my vision definitely had improved a lot about 6/7 months post surgery. From what I've been told by my surgeon, the vision you get back is really dependant on each person and that most of time they're not sure how much vision you get back whether its 70% or 100% restored. I had a few pockets of fluid that still needed to be absorbed which had settled into my central vision and slightly distorted things (bc its like you're looking through water essentially) and i still have a bit of that distortion today but it has gotten a ton better over the past year and I'm still hoping it will keep improving!
@@LaurenBoyne Thank you 🥹🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻so much for the response. I know I’m in a beginning of the road and nobody will be able to tell what will be in future. My retina was detached 50% and stopped in the center of my macula so I understand everything about distortion I see everything little bit squeezed in the center. Can I ask you about driving? Are you driving?
Just coming over this video now as I am due to have a vitrectomy surgery in 3 months time due to diabetic complications I was given the option of knocked out to sleep or just a local anaeshetic I choose the local as I hate being put to sleep, I also made the biggest mistake by watching a UA-cam video of how they do the procedure 😂 I'm so nervous yet I know I have no choice but seeing how upbeat you where has gave me some hope 😊
I'm near sighted and, after a car crash in 2014, I had a retinal tear that, after many years, finally developed into a full blown retinal detachment last week. I've done a vitrectomy with silicon oil instead of gas. Currently I'm able to see a very blurry image with a yellow tint. The doctor is optmistic and told me he will remove the oil in the near future and fix the cataract that usually develops after vitrectomy. Hope you have a good recovery. God bless you and sorry aboit my English.
I'm in the EXACT same boat as you! My retina detached on Jan 7 this year and I go for surgery on, hopefully, Feb 22. What worries me the most is that my OTHER EYE has recently started PVD too and I am TERRIFIED that it may go out before my left eye has had a chance to heal, leaving me COMPLETELY BLIND and helpless!!!
Yes that is definitely still a big fear of mine! I’m hoping it holds on for a while longer for you!! Luckily I’m heading to get my other eye (the one not operated on) lasered tomorrow but I can’t see too much out my operated eye so I’m a bit worried about being able to see!
@@LaurenBoyne Thank you, Lauren! I will keep you in my prayers as well! It is TERRIFYING as HELL to think you can go completely blind at any moment, I know!
This is the best video I've seen on the post-op experience with the scleral buckle. I had surgery about 8 days ago and I have referred back to this video multiple times. So far my post op experience has been very similar. Thanks so much for making and sharing this video!
I'm so nervous, and I don't know what to expect. My Surgery is on June 3rd...I have a 38-year-old daughter looking at a UA-cam video and will need help. Well, pray for me, and I hope I get my eyesight back. I would also like to say thanks for the video...
If something is going on with your eye DO NOT TRUST AN OPTOMETRIST. I had all the signs of a tear and was blown off told it was probably neurological and was told it was nothing. My eye proceedes to detach over the weekedn and loat vision on Sunday. Im 2 surgwries in as of now. Go see a retina specialist if something seems off
Whew- I guess so far I've been lucky. Surgery yesterday with the buckle and the gas bubble. Today after the surgery, the patch came off and there's very little to no pain at all. Not taking anything for pain either. I was half blind in my left eye from the sudden detachment. It's very blurry today and can only make out some fuzzy shapes kinda like when you open your eyes under water without goggles. PS- I love your long full blond hair.
I had detachment last year and had silicone oil in my eye for 10months then I had the oil removed and a cataract removed my vision is not the same as it was but I can see out of it but blurred hope u are ok so young for u I am 53 but so scary wen it happens my pupil is scard so not good this was my right eye good look
I had a retina detachment in July. Just had my 3rd surgery yesterday. It's been a horrifying journey and I still can't see properly. I do remember that surreal feeling of being told, yeah you'll need probably need surgery tomorrow. 😮. Mine was on the top so I was able to have an in office procedure to fix the retinal detachment with the gas bubble. But complications have led to 3 surgeries since 😢
Thank you for sharing this experience. I have lattice degeneration in both of my eyes because I'm also highly myopic and thankfully I went to the ophthalmologist and they caught it so I got laser on both of my eyes to keep the retina from detaching. But I feel like I'm always going to be afraid of it snapping or something
Had two failed vitrectomy's with silicon oil, and now did scleral buckling with vitrectomy, first week was very difficult, sleep face down, sit face down, severe swelling and redness, watering, pain etc,.. Now am in 2nd week, hopefully can see some blurred images but out of alignment, eyelid still drooping,
Thanks so much it was definitely are hard thing to go through! Unfortunately I haven't quite gotten my 20/20 vision back and I'm not sure that I ever will. The doctor said that with this type of surgery they are never entirely sure how much vision you will get back!
Your sharing is so very kind! My friend is near 3 months on her silicone oil buckle, and is concerned how to know best the retina is healed so the silicone should be removed. (And there’s a danger of leaving it in too long?). That surgery is hundreds of miles away, and she doesn’t want to go the distance only to hear she’s not ready. Can you help? How do we learn up, on that?
I am recovering from this just now. I am 3 weeks post-op.. I hated the first week as i had to sit and sleep in that weird position because the surgeon had to place a gas bubble in it the following day.. I still have a wonky eyelid, you did not have that 2 weeks post op..so cool. I am 36 and I stilll do not know what caused it because i never had any eye injury or there was no trauma to my eye. I will only stick to my being near sightedness as the cause of it because that is the only one that makes sense.
@@tolgaismail hi.. my vision has gotten a bit better. I have noticed the the gas bubble is getting smaller. It still covers part of my eye but its not as bad as when he put it in. My eyelid looks like its getting back to normal, though not yet fully there. redness is almost all gone, just a few patches. Not painful anymore.. Just tapering off my steroid now. And ho are you doing? what position were you told to be sitting in and for how long?
@ thanks for your answer, My 5th day waiting facedown position first 2-3 day was blurry view and I was very stressful but today getting better I guess thanks again 🙏
Hi. I just had Buckle Surgery. Post 2 weeks op now. Doctor has given me the all clear to resume normal activities. Which include running. How long did you wait to start exercising again and have you had any problems since your op?
i had my right eye also when im 15 years old, now im 34 next month, just visit your optha regularly, coz after my surgery i had focal laser every 2 years
Hi good to see your video. I also had sclera buckle surgery, and I’m post op day 10, the operated eye is still looking smaller than the other, just wondering if you can share some experience, how long does it take the eye to return to normal size?
It does definitely return to normal size! You will notice though that the pupil looks slightly different then the other eye just due to it being a slightly different shape after the buckle surgery.
@@LaurenBoyne this is really helpful information, because I was wondering about that (3 weeks post surgery) and couldn't understand why this is the case, but forgot to ask my doctor about it.
I’m 6 days post op n my eye looks so much worse than yours…I’m still in the scared I won’t be able to see or have my peripheral vision bc as of now I can’t see anything on my right side (had the surgery on the right eye) n I have constant headaches…this is the worse smh
@@tolgaismail I can see a little better I actually just had cataract surgery on both eyes as well they wanted my vision perception to be more even because it was way different in each eye. Now I see better. (More unison) My eye that got injured (right eye) I can see far extremely well not but trying to send a text or read it's hard now without glasses. But the Dr told me to consider a minor procedure by I believe laser. She told me I have a piece of cartilage behind some part of my eye and says my vision in that eye may improve that much more if removed. My eyes have gone through a lot since it happened. Thank you for asking.
@@tolgaismail I also forgot to mention all be it I see much better if I place my head or lay in a certain direction I can see the air/oil bubbles still. The Dr also told me that she can remove the oil or air bubbles as well it's a timely procedure and it does not really affect me in any way so I will bypass it honestly it's something I can live with. She said it would be much harder if it were oil bubbles and being this detachment happened so quickly and I went into surgery so fast they had to use what was on hand which was oil. Good times
@@tolgaismail thank you. Honestly it's interesting to be because I've read so many stories about this and everyone's experience seems to be so different very intriguing to me to read on these :-)
@ana_m1404 horrible. Don't remember the numbers. But the optomologist said I have one of the worse near sighted vision a person could have. I remember he said my right is -6.00. I have been living with just my right eye since my 3rd detachment in my left eye. 😒
The doctor said it was because I have lattice degeneration so the tissue that lines the back of my eye is really thin! Likely had a small tear that eventually resulted in detachment
@@LaurenBoyne gotcha I'm sorry to hear that! Do they know if that lattice degeneration (LD) is genetic or caused by some lifestyle factor? Is it only in that one eye or is it also in the other eye? I googled and it mentioned how LD may be linked to "low blood flow or problems with inadequate blood flow to the eyes", which Google also says may be caused by high blood pressure. So I wonder if there is a gene therapy or lifestyle change that you can make to help. Do you know?
@@TexasFightTexas I’m fairly certain it was genetic! My grandfather had a retina detachment so likely was passed down from him! The doctors said it would not have been cause by anything I did (unless I had a serious fall which sometimes causes them but I hadn’t had a bad fall!)
I thought you had to recover face down for retinal surgery. literally having to lie face down for a week or two. Seems like you didn’t have to for this
@@LaurenBoyne That’s one positive at least. The gas bubble surgery seems frustrating, and your scleral surgery must have been frustrating enough. I hope if it ever happens to me, i have the same surgery as you. i have a -5.50 myopic in both eyes so will be more prone to it. it’s my worst fear.
I wish you the best! I am 37 and went to the ER because I had a huge black floater appear when I woke up along with flashing in the corner of my eye. Ophthalmologist says I have vitreous detachment going on. It's scary because it can lead to retinal detachment if the vitreous pulls on the retina when it separates. I have a high perscription of myopia -7 . People make sure to have your eyes looked at if you have any of those symptoms. Ophthalmologist are available at all hours to fix your retinal detachments because they are urgent.

@@cycloneyou how you doing after it??
Christmas Eve? Me too!
Thank you so much for this video. I’ve been following along with this timeline due to my surgery, and this helped so much. I’m post op day 10.
I’ve just had the sclera buckle surgery 5 days ago. Vision is so blurry 😓 which is v upsetting especially that i was seeing prrfectly before the op.only had the very top of my visual field affected so my central vision was absolutely perfect.
I got so anxious but thanks for sharing your experience.
how about you now ?
This is my exact experience too. Hope you are doing well now
I wish you a fast recovery!
My other eye has actually been doing really well! The doctors been monitoring but it’s been all good so far. Hope you have a fast recovery as well!
@@LaurenBoyne Thank you!
You are so brave. I had complications on my keratitis and I freaked out completely. I went through hell for two months.
Im on my 2nd week after vitrectomy surgery. Im 52 had no previous health problems other than nearsightedness with glasses for driving. I also only had blurred vision, no floaters no sparks or silver flecks.
GOD bless you. He healed you. Praise Jesus Christ.
How are you now please?
Thank you so much for sharing. Used to be very nearsighted, has lasik, and then now have some floaters..and arcs of light…I am waiting to see a retina specialist at the moment. You are so brave! Thank you for being so brave about it!!
How are you doing now?
wishing you a speedy recovery queen!

Sir ,after retina tear You have not received any treatment ? Like barrage leser?
I also had the surgery. I had a torn retina and had emergency surgery about 3 weeks ago. I'm getting better. They say it should take 10 to 12 weeks.
Today is June 4th. I sincerely hope that your surgery went well and your road to recovery has begun.
Go see a retina specialist if something seems off
YES !!
Your eye cleared so quick! I’m 14 days post op and I’m looking like your day 6
Appreciate you sharing. I pray all is well with you and u have even better vision now as of July 4th 2023
I am very sorry, I have been injured for a month and I understand you well
Hi just had the op 11 7 2024.gas bubble going down now .getting there.thanks for your help you look amazing now.❤
How is going since from that day ? How is vision I hope u doing good ? Would u give updates pls
Day 5 here - same surgery although I think I had a partial buckle - sitting outside listening with eyes shut x
Any update do you see good now ?
My prayers are with you
I had detachment last year and had silicone oil in my eye for 10months then I had the oil removed and a cataract removed my vision is not the same as it was but I can see out of it but blurred hope u are ok so young for u I am 53 but so scary wen it happens my pupil is scard so not good this was my right eye good look
What is the duration between surgery and detachment?
I hope you are well now.
I had the same surgery 3 years ago nearly xx hope youre still doing great x
After surgery how is your vision now ?
Same here! I’m on my 2nd week recovery now.
My daughter is 9years old she had already her surgery last year the vitrectomy Sceleral buckle.. Hoping she can recover
Had two failed vitrectomy's with silicon oil, and now did scleral buckling with vitrectomy, first week was very difficult, sleep face down, sit face down, severe swelling and redness, watering, pain etc,.. Now am in 2nd week, hopefully can see some blurred images but out of alignment, eyelid still drooping,
You are such a brave young lady I hope you have fully recoved now. How is your vision now are you able to see good as before the surgery?
I’m jealous! You actually got to lay down! I have to be in the upright position
Had the buckle to last week and I’m glad I found your video the light kills me as well and I was wondering if it’ was normal
Hope you get well I had surgery 3 weeks ago I've started drinking carrot juice im positive it helps
God bless you. You seem very brave
I am also due for laser for my left eye in January 2025
Any update how is your vision now ? I m in my 5th day after operation wondering
Had sclero buckling 6 years ago and now I am scheduled for cataract surgery on the same eye For reference my age is 39
After your retina surgery did you have a film over your eyes with millions of black spots and how long did it go before absorbing into the body?
Did you mention how you think the detachment happened? Did you rub your eye too much or did you hit your head near the eyes?
Hi. I just had Buckle Surgery. Post 2 weeks op now. Doctor has given me the all clear to resume normal activities. Which include running. How long did you wait to start exercising again and have you had any problems since your op?
my doctor cleared me about two weeks after as well! i started exercising maybe 3-4 weeks after!
Thank you for your quick reply. 🙏🏻
i had my right eye also when im 15 years old, now im 34 next month, just visit your optha regularly, coz after my surgery i had focal laser every 2 years
But can you see in your right eye ?
It definitely is very scary right afterwards but it should heal up! The vision takes a while to get better as well!
Hello, I have had three surgery. First surgery: gas bubble and next two surgery: silicon oil. At the moment I cannot see nothing
Oil removed or not??
@@akshayprajapati6633 not yet
Im 24 and iv just had this surgry last week
I had surgery for a detached retna in Feb of 2023 it was a experience to say the least I still see gas bubbles

@@AngelaNorvaisas thanks a lot for news I wish you have a healthy days 🙏🙏 I hope it can be better as well thx again
Honestly it's interesting to be because I've read so many stories about this and everyone's experience seems to be so different very intriguing to me to read on these :-)
have you had prophylactic laser treatment done for your left eye?
Scleral buckles are wild
Curious how your eyesight is months after surgery.?.....just finished my first week since
It’s ok! Definitely is not back to 20/20 but hoping eventually it will be
I would be worried about sneezing. How did you mitigate that? Sneezing puts a ton of pressure on the eye.
Sneezing can be suppressed in many people by pressing firmly under your nose on your upper lip with your finger when you feel a sneeze coming on.
Going tomorrow for my right eye. 😢
Good luck!! Getting a scleral buckle?
Yes! Day 2 after surgery. Sucks eye is swollen and won’t stay dry. Feels like a migraine

What was the root cause of your detachment? Did you ever figure it out? ua-cam.com/video/jYcYMtoMgns/v-deo.html
@@LaurenBoyne makes sense. just curious though if you don't mind sharing - do you have high blood pressure?
@@TexasFightTexas No I don't!
Should of gone a lot earlier lucky
I thought you had to recover face down for retinal surgery. literally having to lie face down for a week or two. Seems like you didn’t have to for this
No I didn’t! If you get the gas bubble in your eye you have to recover in a specific position but I had the scleral buckle which doesn’t require that!
@@user-ms3ko5gn8e Thankfully my eyes are fine. i look after my eyes religiously. Everything i eat is great for the retina. i take supplements that hit the retina nicely.
