    Mitch Mitchell played drums on the Woodstock gig. Yes he really was originally named Johnny Allen. His dad, Al thought that he may have been named after somebody that Lucille was seeing, so he immediately renamed him to James Marshall. Like and subscribe Thank you!

      Could that have implied that Al was not the biological father, or was it her being mean to Al, or perhaps Al being paranoid, or simply Al being upset that Jimi wasn't initially named after him?

    A frequent statement about Jimi Hendrix is that he often played rhythm and lead guitar simultaneously and therefore often sounded like two guitarists playing at the same time.

    As a drummer,I saw Jimi on my 14th birthday, 6-22-69 at Devonshire Downs - Granada Hills, California. They called it The Newport Pop Festival. It was on that day I realized I needed to be in FRONT of the stage, not behind drums. I became a professional singer/guitarist from that day forward till today!

    I was talking to an older lady a few years ago . She said she managed to smuggle herself with her friend into Jimi’s dressing room in Blackpool , England 1967 before his concert . By the way, l did get to see him myself just before his death at The lsle of Wight Festival 1970. He was very tired and not at his best . His equipment kept malfunctioning as well. It was still a great thrill though to see him live..

    Jimi had HUGE hands. Allowing him to simply manhandle the neck of the guitar into submission to create any sound in his head. As a guitar player with small hands, I envy his hands most of all. Dudes thumb could probably fret the high E string if he wanted to. Mine can barely fret the low E while trying to play Jimi's songs. He made guitar sound so effortless and easy to play. Until you pick up a guitar and realize he is playing some of the most intricate and complex positions ever. And that thumb is constantly putting in WORK. He's a genius, gifted both musically and physically.

      Very interesting. There was a Massive Growth period for me in my playing, and After having played for many many yrs. I'd dream at night of jimi standing at the tailgate of old ford farm truck, with some elder gentlemen, he'd smile, nod, and point to his flying V in the bed of the truck telling me to pick it up and play something. Each time that happened, and was only a few times, I'd wake up the next morning and absolutely freaking Blaze chops I'd been struggling with. Do I think Jimi blessed me in my sleep with something extra. No. I simply think it's cool as shit the way it happened. And Love the fact it was Jimi and that white Flying V. Is funny what the unconscious sleeping mind can and will do. Much love ppl.

Yeah I was surprised by the fact that he preferred right-handed guitars, just like Eric gales who of course was influenced by him quite a lot though he actually plays even with the strings upside down. There is a slightly different feel with an upside down headstock, so I think Jimi was particularly drawn to that. Your kind words are very appreciated!

      I always wondered how he became such a force, and all you had to do was say Little Richard to explain everything. Those are quite some accolades. I have an electronics background, so I consider what he did to be elevating the area to the level of art. That's probably the greatest thing technology can offer us: it cannot make art itself, but it can enable us to create new visions. Bring us together and all that.

I think some of the especially strange efx included in many of Zoom’s processors would have appeared in a few of his songs, had he remained with us. Subdecay’s and Earthquaker Devices’ gear would keep him up for days on end. Imagine what he would think of guitar synthesizers.

He did use a Fender Twin Reverb with Curtis Knight and the Squires in 1965, but was using Sunn briefly (in '66) as a promotional deal before switching to Marshall. wow never knew Jimi was born Johnny Allen. The Woodstock band line-up was Jimi, Larry Lee, Billy Cox, Juma Sultan, Jerry Velez and Mitch Mitchell on drums not Buddy Miles. I always thought the famous guitar burning was at Woodstock too, but no, that was 2 years earlier at Monterey, although he did set fire to his guitar on many occasions, the first ever at the Astoria, Finnsbury Park London.
    Finally, i think it quite obvious Jimi was murdered/assassinated. Too deep to get into here except to say Jim drank very little that night yet his autopsy found litres of wine in his lungs but very little in his stomach or blood alcohol count. 'Tappy' Wright wrote a book about his time as a roadie and notes a pre-death confession of Hendrix's manager Michael Jeffery who had a lot to be gained by Jimi's death as well as the backing of some heavy London gangsters.

    ...you ask pretty much any professional rock guitarist from the 70s to 90s, who their influences are, and oftentimes the two top names are Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page... check out 'Band of Gypsies' LP... if memory serves, Hendrix uses a ringmod on 'Who Knows', and a univibe on 'Machinegun'... once, i told my sister that 'Little Wing' is 'the perfect song'... she's a bit older than me, and saw Hendrix live, twice... she gave me 'Are You Experienced?'... said she had 2 copies so she could give one away... i used to spin it backwards on a small record player... then one day played it forward (that vinyl was very tough), and life was never the same... Jimi might have done more than anyone else, to influence what came next.... did you know Uli Roth 'hung out' with Monika Dannemann? ...she painted 2 or 3 of his 'Electric Sun' album covers, and previously wrote the lyrics to 'We'll Burn The Sky' (about Jimi) by the Scorpions... you can hear Hendrix/Ernie Isley influences in Roth's playing...

    Jimi was the shit!
    I believe his Marshall Lead heads of that era were 200 watt heads, the Marshall Major. I have read several books and watched countless documentaries about Jimi Hendrix. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.
    While in the UK, Jimi and his management were taken to meet Jim Marshall, the owner of Marshall, the amplifier manufacturer. Jim Marshall was the former drum teacher of Mitch Mitchell, who was then the drummer of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Mitchell introduced both of the James Marshalls (Jimi was James Marshall Hendrix) to eachother and they had a good laugh. The plan of Jimi and his management was to have a Marshall head with a backup and speaker cabinets in each part of the world in which they had planned to tour. They surmised that it would save them money to transport and reduce the maintenance needed for those amps. The Marshall amps of that era were not very reliable and they were notoriously difficult to repair. Marshall made amps with whatever components that were readily available at the time, often mismatched components. It was extremely difficult to find replacement parts and exact replacements were even harder to find. Jimi was hard on his equipment also. They bought several identical amps from Jim Marshall that day. Their strategy did not exactly go according to plan in the future as his financiers had them criss-cross the USA and play shows and festivals wherever they could get paid.

      @guitarmeetsscience  Місяць тому +1

      How cool is that! Thanks for filling in the gap. Like some of the ironic stories of how these guitar players came to be, it looks like Marshall amps had a similar story. I didn't know they had such a tough time in the beginning. That is pretty cool!

    • @TheRealcdawg22
      @TheRealcdawg22 Місяць тому +4

      @guitarmeetsscience What I know about Marshall is that Jim Marshall was a drummer turned drum teacher, and he worked out of a music store. So he regularly overheard bunches of guitarists coming into the store and asking the owner if he could get Fender amps. In England at that time, I think all that they had for amps were Vox amplifiers, and I believe they were owned or distributed by Selmer Musical Instruments, who also did organs and accordions. Well, the Vox amps, although we appreciate them for their great sound, were not loud enough. Not even close. Back in those days, there were no high-powered solid state PAs yet. So, as a guitarist,if you wanted to be heard, you needed a Fender amp. Well, that music store had a problem getting Fender stuff. There was no distributor in the UK. So, to get them, you had to send your money to Fender, including the exorbitant cost of shipping, and it took awhile to get there. For financial reasons, this put that idea out of reach for 95% of the musicians. So, Jim Marshall took a look at the guts of one of the few Fenders that was ordered and saw an opportunity. He figured that he could make them himself and cut out all of that unnecessary expense. Obviously, the market was there. So Jim ordered the loudest amp Fender made, which was the Bassman and basically copied the entire electronic circuitry. He had to source all of the parts from what he could get in the UK, most notably the valves and transformers, but the same was true with the capacitors, pots, and everything else. In the UK, they did not readily have 6L6 tubes, but they did have EL-34 valves that were similar in power and dissipation (Mullards, if I remember correctly). The transformers that they sourced in the UK, although plenty adequate for that purpose, turned out to play a big role in how different a Marshall sounds from a Fender. All of the different parts combined made the Marshall sound different. Jim had a great idea to separate the amp from the speakers into a head unit and 412 speaker cabinets, respectively. That may have happened a little later on. My recollection is a little hazy on that part of the story. So, Jim went into business himself, making and selling bunches of British bastardized Bassmans. He would go on to do other designs and hire proper engineers at some point. The transformers remained the same, though. They had reliability issues for awhile with the amps though. Most likely because they used whatever parts were available. If they didn't have capacitors of a certain value, they would use a different value as close as they had. When you do that several times in a circuit, your results are going to be different. You are probably aware of the "Plexi." It isn't actually a model unto itself. There were a batch of amps that had a combination of different parts at the same time that they had to use a plexiglass control panel because they ran out of the regular panels that they used. That particular batch of amps was discovered later on to supposedly sound better than others. I'm not an expert on that story, but I think that is the gist of it. It is a good example of the parts mismatching that they did. It's crazy. Eventually Marshall built PAs and all kinds of stuff, but it all started with that Bassman. Cheers!

He fucked the amp with his guitar. His guitar tech held it up in in back while Hendrix fucked it round the front. I heard some great stories on those Hendrix documentaries I saw on VHS tapes.

      @@guitarmeetsscience What he means is that tired old story of Hendrix inhaling vomit isn't how he died. His lungs were filled with wine meaning he was held still while another shoved a bottle down this throat thus drowning him. Very likely murdered by his manager, a spooky dude named Michael Jeffrey. The German girl Monika found Hendrix dead and then phoned up Eric Burdon who came over and helped her flush all the drugs. Then they left. The medics arrived, the door was standing open, no one was there except Hendrix lying on the bed... dead. The medics testified in court against Monika who made a decades long career of telling the vomit story and pretending she was Hendrix's girlfriend when she only knew him a couple of days. The judge ordered her to cease and desist and she killed herself, asphyxiation in her car shortly after. The lawsuit was instituted by Kathy Etchingham who was Jimi's longtime girlfriend. Read "Room Full of Mirrors" by Charles Cross and make another video informing everyone how it really happened.

The tension his manager Michael Jeffrey was laying on him, literally working him to death, stealing his money, purchasing a life insurance policy on him plus the testimony from the actual medics who encountered Jimi's corpse... yes I'm quite sure of what happened.

      A lot of those in the 27 club died from OD's, but in Jimi's case It was just a really powerful sleeping pill. Theories suggest that it relaxed his stomach and esophagus so much that he couldn't keep the wine and whatever else he had in his stomach down. Really terrible way to go.

      @@guitarmeetsscience I wrote you a reply of how Hendrix died but maybe you haven't read it yet. He was murdered, drowned with wine, attacked with a bottle shoved down his throat. His lungs were filled with wine. He didn't die unconscious inhaling vomit. The medics who drove his corpse to the morgue testified in court years later that he was dead when they arrived at the flat. They also said it is ludicrous to suggest they'd allow a patient to suffocate via vomiting while driving to a hospital.
