  • This is how I run my stove with a full load of wood after I build up a load of coals.
Stove top temps around 650 with fluetemps at 520 after settling in.

I also monitor flue temps with my stove to determine when to close the air down. It’s much quicker to respond than the stove top. I like the draft meter, nice tool to really fine tune your burn.

@@jefffarm2944 the colder it is the higher it will get due to increased draft. Mine usually cruises around 600-650 with a full load.
Are you shutting the air down in time? If not that could be a reason yours goes that high. What is your chimney setup? The taller the chimney the more draft and the hotter it can potentially get.

Seems that there is so much air going into the stove, burning up the wood too fast.

At what stage in the burn did you notice this?

My vintage dual glass door Englander Woodstove would burn slowly for 10-12 hours before re-stoking with more wood. this one had an 8in pipe (16ft).straight up.

@@dundeeecroc those old stoves were able to choke down further than what these new EPA stoves are able to unfortunately. This stove is also good for 10 hours at least, it’s just that the wood I’m using was cut to length for a stove half the size so I get half the burn time I could get.

How often do you sweep you chimney? Have you ever had a runnaway up your stovepipe and if so what method did you use to get it under controll? Also just courious what is in the bowl on top of your stove.

I sweep my chimney 2-3 times a year since it’s easy enough. Once in December and maybe once in February depending on if the wood was seasoned enough. I always sweep at the beginning of the season before I burn as well.
I’ve never had a chimney fire because I’m a stickler for making sure the stove is running properly to not have smoke coming the chimney. I have had runaway stove on my previous stove due to a bad glass gasket. I would either throw baking soda, or ash on the fire to choke it out and then immediately shut the door.
It’s just a steamer full of water on the stove to put some more moisture in the air.
