Minstrel shows date from the 1840s when a guy named Christy formed a black-face minstrel group. They popularized Stephen Foster's songs. White people liked black music and it sold, but they didn't want to be around black people. It was still like this in the 1950s when I was a kid - see "Hairspray" for a take on what it was like in 1950s Baltimore when a tv dance show had to be segregated. That's the world I grew up in (I'm white). Time marched on. I prefer being able to have my black friends, thank you very much.

Waring also did the flip of this - had all the performers be white and the Interlocutor was a black man. When they toured, the black singer had to eat in the kitchens of restaurants - not allowed in the dining rooms. Waring ate with him.

We’re they mocking or inclusive . We should go cautiously judging those we can’t ask their intentions at the time. The minstrel was not ridicule but imitation and preservation of the songs and humor of the blacks. Much American music later came from the music of the Blacks.

In the early 20th century (and much before obviously) blackface was just a staple. Some minstrel performers where racist and hated black people while others loved them and used this art form as tribute.
Artists such as Jolson used it in a way similar to how drag is used in the modern day.
In theatre things have always been exaggerated for effective visuals and story telling.

As offensive as this is by 2023 standards, and maybe even by 1950 standards, ethnic caricature was Vaudeville Staple. And believe it or not, it is still visible in Neil Simon's "Sunshine Boys" with two old Vaudevillians attempting to reprise their old act, played by Jewish Goerge Burns and Walter Matthau. And guess what? Ethnic Caricature (Jewish) shows up as recently as "The Marvelous Mrs Maisal" about the rise of a Jewish Female Comedian in the late 1950s complete with all the Jewish Stereotypes. Listen carefully to the show and catch the Jewish linguistic cadence.

No, it's not really. There are a few rougher examples to be found in Old films, but this television show treats it more like a Nostalgia trip. Notice the performance of Kentucky Babe at the end, after the show is over. The lyrics are generally politically correct for the time, even while they are still wearing makeup. Certain phrases from when the song was originally written in the early 1900s are not spoken in this version. The show would have worked had they used white people acting as ignorant Hillbillies, a buffoon is a buffoon regardless of skin color, but I am not going to condemn it for what it is, since that is just how life was. As a millennial, I need to say that you people need need to stop retroactively projecting your black and white Millennial opinions on to the past so strongly. Life is never going to be black and white, no pun intended there. Everything is a nuanced shade of gray. Furthermore, dear, The more people continue to think they know the full story without knowing the full story, the deeper I will continue to dig into the past to unearth it. I refuse to forget history. I am a human being, and I'm not perfect. Neither are you. Neither are politics.

This was very difficult to watch, hard to believe it wasn’t considered politically incorrect then, certainly is extremely about with today’s consciousness. Though I can imagine redneck white people and clan members probably would enjoy this now or 50 years from now because some people do not change in their hearts or their mind no matter how many decades pass and how many different eras we go through.
When I was in the Cub Scouts in the late 60s our troop performed in plaque base for a talent show night with other Cub Scout troops. No one thought it was unusual that we are all in black face wearing white gloves and giant white bowties. We sang “Mammy” And “Swanee River”.
What a strange thing to force boys to do in the name of entertainment and trying to showcase our talent. Makes me feel nauseous and tearful now over 50 years later

How can you be proud of hating black people? It’s easy to say everyone’s the same if you never actually knew someone who’s black. And by that I don’t mean „I saw someone who was black“ but actually knowing a black person. Even then, knowing one person wouldn't be enough, because one person can’t represent every other person who has the same colour.
What if I’d say that every white person is the same? You’d probably think about all the different white people you know, but somehow you think that there’s no individuality if someone has a different skin tone? It's mostly stupid because black people can come from so many different cultures. Perhaps they can speak African, English or French. Sometimes they’re Christians, sometimes they are Rastafarians, Muslims or Atheists.
