Catching Beautiful Rough Shiners in Alabama | Alabama Microfishing

- I wasn't exactly sure what I was catching, but I knew they were some good looking shiners. It turns out that almost all of them were rough shiners (Notropis baileyi). These shiners were plentiful, aggressive, and beautifully colored. It was a real treat to wade this wild creek and be able to catch some of them during this evening trip.

So nice fishing over there. I've got some species at home. Rainbow shiners and Red belly dace. Keep on fishing and greetings from The Netherlands.
Nice. Glad to hear you're enjoying some North American natives. I'm always surprised when I hear how popular some of our species are in Europe and how unpopular they are here.
The streams in extreme Northwest Florida and southwest Alabama are almost all sand bottom. That's where I grew up hunting and fishing. It is a beautiful part of the country.
Thanks. It was my first time in that area. I didn't really know what to expect. It was weird to me just how much sand was there. It was all sand and all deep. I haven't really seen that anywhere else before.
I've never related to a video so much. Fishing around central Alabama I cannot escape the Rough Shiners. I will go to different watersheds to target specific species and every time I get excited thinking I have something new only to realize it's another Rough Shiner. It's ALWAYS Rough Shiners. Bright ones, dull ones, dark lateral band, dang near invisible lateral band... It's always Rough Shiners. 😂
Haha I've realized that every area has a fish that is just so common it's not even funny.
You really need to get a net to get under the fish as you lift them.
