    Moved from Wales to Greenwich to work in Black heath Road at a big tin can factory. Had digs in Charlton and usually walked to work. Great memories

    This must have been spring time in 1976 as by late summer every blade of grass in the UK had been bleached yellow .

      @ 3.00, not a good idea to be mowing dry, parched grass,..it'll go brown quicker,..best to leave well alone and keep
      the little bit of greenery as protection.
      do not use sprinklers,.it's a waste of water; once the grass goes brown, watering will not get it green again.
      grass is a tough plant, it will come back again with cool/cold nights and gradual, increased rainfall.

    Brilliant video of Greenwich. It is so interesting to see the park and streets the way they once were. I take a walk through the town centre every week and can confirm that generally speaking, not much has changed. I think all of the buildings I spotted in the video are still there although they have been done up a bit since (enhanced rather than completely regenerated, thank god!).
    The biggest differences that I noticed between the areas I know well that were shown in the video then & now were:
    1) the lack of railings between the pavement and road in some junctions where I know them to be now. Very strange seeing it like that! Looks nicer without the railings, but of course they do serve a very important purpose and you do get lunatic drivers along Trafalgar Rd at night (2 passed me on my walk home from there this evening);
    2) the Curry Sark the way i remember visiting it as a child in the ‘90s - without the large glass casing that surrounds it now. I must say, I personally prefer it now and like the roadside railings, the glass casing serves an important purpose (don’t forget the fire years ago) but it’s brilliant to see how I remember it from so long ago.
    3) the Gipsy Moth. I knew the boat was once docked near the Curry Sark, but have never actually seen it. Very interesting.
    I wouldn’t know about the different shops and businesses that used to occupy the buildings... I’m sure quite a bit has changed over the years in that respect and would love to know about more about that side of things as it’s so often the people who make a place just as much or more than it’s buildings and parkland.
    Other than that, the Queens House, Observatory, Royal Naval College (now Greenwich Uni) look the same as they ever did being protected as you would expect, views about Greenwich Park are also exactly the same down to the tree lines and pathways with the only difference being that now you can see the Docklands developments in the distance beyond the river.
    Absolutely fascinating video, loved watching it. Hope there are more!

      @@rodjones117 The People, The Market, Gypsy Moth Gone, Cutty Sark now only a replica really, Royal Naval College Gone, Dreadnought Seaman's Hospital Gone. It has changed a lot, and not really for the Better - I was born and raised there, I lived in Coltman House (shown several times in Video. Went back there in 1990's playground area in between Rockfield and Coltman house was fenced off, with a chain link fence roof, to protect kids from bottles that were thrown from top floor flats, nearly all the faces I saw were black, When I lived there no black people did.

    • @Sabotaz80xx
      @Sabotaz80xx 2 роки тому +4

      This part of Greenwich has always been ‘clean and tidy’ and still is today, what with the Cutty Sark and Old Royal Naval College being located right here, two places of significant cultural history, subsequently the immediate area has always been a maintenance priority from the council. If you went down the road to Deptford or the industrial area around what is today known as North Greenwich in the 70s, you certainly wouldn’t have called in clean and tidy back then.

    This is stunning video footage for a clip verging 45 years old. A shame Thames got replaced by Carlton. Thames professionalism couldn't be matched today.

      Agree it looks as if it was recorded yesterday, very clear footage. Far better quality than you would get from the standard reel type film which is often dusty/deteriorates over time unless stored under the correct conditions.

    Only three things have changed 😉
    1) the view of Docklands from Greenwich Park has changed with Canary Wharf development
    2) the Gypsy Moth is gone
    3) the cars...

    Kidbrooke born and bred still live in kidbrooke. Greenwich has turned into one of the worst London boroughs now. I spend a lot of time in the village and park and on the heath. It’s rare too here a London accent now. Unfortunately not many of us left 😩🇬🇧🇬🇧

      Maybe one of those immigrants could help you with your English grammar and spelling, because I find that most of them have impeccable English. Sadly, your spelling and grammar is pretty terrible. Have you considered investing in an education to help you with your English?

    @0:42 can see the flat (Coltman House) I lived in with my Nan & Grandad, I recall when they installed the Gypsy Moth IV, and when they took it out again. The road hidden behind metal shuttering is where I got knocked down in 1964. I was two following my big brother, who was trying to go to park without me. Never used to see a car on that road, then bam, I was knocked about 100 feet on cobblestone road.
    @4:25 you can see the car park they built at top of Thames St. as road was one way car park remained unused for about 10 years. Strabgely they now have made top part of Thames St. Welland Road, and it is two way to allow use of that car park - why change name of road?

    Pity no sound. The flats where I was raised shown here (Coltman House) I could see Gypsy Moyh IV out of my bedroom window - I remember it being installed. The Playground (shown ealier in video in Thames Street) was not there when I was a kid. For some reason after playground installed they renamed road to Welland Street.
    Loved playing in Park, and around the Cutty Sark. I even got knocked down on the road they closed, before installing Gypsy Moth. It was a cobblestone road, Bloody unlucky for me, never used to see many cars.
    Shame does not show the Botanical Gardens at Blackheath end of Park. That car park 5:52 was never used - the road to it was one way, took them years to suss that out. Quite a few dumped old mopeds down there though.

    One evening many, many years ago, has very young teenage girls, my late mother and her sister decided to climb the gates of the park at blackheath end has a short cut to get down to the lower greenwich end and make their way home.
    Halfway down observatory hill they realised that they were being followed by a what at 'first seemed' to be an old limping lady dressed in a black hat, and long cloak like coat.
    My mother thought this was odd since the park was officially closed and they had climbed the tall large gates. so they both picked up and began to run.
    They were both shocked to see this what at first seemed to be an 'old lady' start to run after them with her hat falling to the ground and seeing that it was a man chasing them.
    They did manage to escape over the gates at the greenwich end, but my mother said that could have been the end of them both!.
