    I live in Brazil and here is pretty common to harvest bamboo shoots to cook too, but the species that i have harvested is different from these from inside, and the taste is extremely bitter when raw, we have to cook about 4 times or more to get rid of the bitterness, sorry for bad english, as you see it's not my native lenguage

    • @jbdeadangel
      @jbdeadangel 6 років тому +1

      I think i know which species u r talking about. We, people from North eastern part of India, use bamboo shoots a lot, but avoid that particular variety for its bitterness. Try the other species if u hv got them in Brazil. They r much subtle compared to this variety.

      I'm Brazilian too and the species he's talking about probably is Bambusa vulgaris, which indeed is pretty common here but isn't the best for harvesting shoots due to high starch content in them.

    I live in the south Willamette Valley in Western Oregon. The day before yesterday I planted sixteen two year old Phyllostachys edulis (Moso) transplants. I planted them at six foot intervals along the bottom of a eight foot high berm that runs parallel to our year round creek. I used a lot of composted cow manure below and around the sides of each plant and topped the area off with a thick mulch of sawdust. It is my hope to one day enjoy homegrown bamboo shoots. Thanks for the video! Looks like you know how to have good fun!

      I planted more than 40 giant clumping bamboo 30 yrs ago alongside a main track and around the house .....so dence now that easily could immagine being prisoner as the bamboos are exactly right next to each other....like some 15 or 20 shoots every sq.yd....35 m high ....impossible to get through ...I think the Moso is a better choice .Just love bamboo tho'.

    Such a majestic plant and how could it have known that it would harmonize so well with humans. You can eat it, build houses with it, make music with it, move water and make boats with it, make weapons (sadly) with it, make kites to fly in the sky with it, make kitchen tools with it, make drinking cups, dishes, chopsticks of course and a thousand other things!

    Bamboo shoots are also used in the north eastern part of India. I am from Assam (north east India) and here we don't usually cook it right away. We shred the soft part of the shoot and kind of ferment it in a glass jar for 2-3 weeks or until it becomes sour. Once it is sour, we pickle it or use it in various dishes (specially fish dishes). Its just awesome.

    There is always something I find magical about bamboo forests. When I lived in Hawaii I'd seek them out. When the winds pick up they start to sway and creak making music, also fun to harvest and eat of course! So many uses for housing tools furniture and clothes. Much love chika ^-^

    Hi Chika. I've enjoyed this video very much. I visited a bamboo forest in the early 1990's. My family was living in Panama and we visited a nature reserve with my young son's school group. We were able to wander within the bamboo forest and I found it very quiet and peaceful. I loved the sound of the wind moving between and around the growing bamboo. I do remember the bamboo shoots growing from the ground but have never had the opportunity to eat them. Thank you for sharing your day, and thank your hosts for allowing your viewers to accompany you. Peace.

    I learned a bunch about bamboo that I thought I already knew....but didn't. One thing was about its diameter.....I figured it started out as a small diameter seedling and like a tree grew larger in diameter as it aged. I found this video to be very interesting and its maker to be a very enjoyable multilingual teacher.....thank you!

    That looked like so much fun. I would have loved to have been there. I love that sort of thing. I've also never tried bamboo shoots so what better way to experience them for the first time than to have them fresh. Also, a fun little side note, 竹 was the first kanji I ever learned.

      "If you carry your childhood with you, you never become old."- I don't remember who to quote.
      I'm not sure why 竹 was my first kanji. But I do remember it was the first, along with 私, 桜, 朝, and my personal favorite, 夢. Now my kanji knowledge has increased to a whopping 10! I'm almost there. :)

    I like bamboo shoots.
    However, in this video I am captivated by the lady in the video more than anything else.
    Btw, i read some of the comments below.
    Raw bamboo shoots cannot be eaten raw, as it contains toxin cyanide which is the cause of the bitter after taste.
    I was searching for video on how long I should cook raw bamboo shoots. Mesmerized by the lady instead.
