Mattingly Vs. Goose. That's pretty cool. The 1st AB against Fernando, if I'm not mistaken was from 1985. The AL was down 6-1 at that point. I remember thinking Mattingly was goin to it a HR, and he came damn close. But man, only 9 HR's at the break. He had a HUGE 2nd half, to finish with 35HR's and 145 RBI's.
THE HITMAN!!!!!!!! best player in baseball for 5 straight years in the mid 80's.. in front of boggs, puckett, Brett, Henderson, winfield, yount, Ripken, Dawson, sandberg etc....
Pound for pound no one better. If you're a Yankee fan he from my generation he should be your favorite player hands down..and if you're not a Yankee fan from My generation, You should respect the hell out Him..poor guy all he did was face nasty lefties. His Home run off Benes remains My favorite Yankee moment
ive been to probably 75% of the old stadiums greatest moments from 1986-2008 and that night in October 1995 that stadium rocked and shook like NEVER before when mattingly went yard!!! ur comment put a huge smile on my face broski
Don was way ahead of most of these All Star Game pitches, hence, his awkward follow-thrus... and lousy batting average in this event. I often felt he should have began to choke up like Wade Boggs, adopt a more upright stance because his average was so high during the regular season that any variation of his normal stance would not have really hurt his power, and perhaps given him a better look at the ball from a different perspective. This follow thru of his gave him back issues.
No shocker that he didn’t get his bat on the screwball, it’s a pitch you’re almost never going to see. Donnie should have concentrated on trying to take the ball the other way against the All-Star lefties
Mattingly deserved the AL League MVP that year!
Don Mattingly was my favorite 1st baseman in his time. A great man from Evansville, Indiana.
Donnie Baseball, my childhood hero, Hall of Famer fasho
