Prior to forming BAND-MAID, KOBATO MIKU was part of an Idol trio called L’il Cumin. Recalling her time working at a Tokyo maid cafe, she had the inspiration to form a band that would wear maid outfits while playing “cool music.” The rest is history. BAND-MAID celebrated their tenth anniversary last year.
BESTIE is a one-off collaboration with Mike Einziger of INCUBUS, so they created new, on-off outfits for this video.

They still dress as maids. The "Bestie" videa was an exception, as it was a collaboration with another artist (Mike Einziger from Incubus). The only other times they have not worn the maid outfits is when they did their accoustic Christmas livestream a few years ago, and when they dressed in traditional Japanese fashion for a video they did under the name Band-Maiko (which was an April Fool's Day prank that eventually turned into a larger side project).

Checkout "Don't You Tell Me" MV where they are in full maid mode in the video and the live version too as it's a bit special, also "Afterlfe" is a very maid themed music video. Although the maid theme is still with them it has constantly evolved and only on a few occassions have they deviated entirely from it. First when they played an April Fools joke and announced a changed of image and name to "Band Maiko" with stunning costumes, checkout "Gion Cho" or "Secret My Lips" . Second when they did an acoustic concert in 2021 , checkout "Sayonakidori" and "Catharsis" acoustic and finally for the song "Bestie"

Great reaction. They are maids because they know how to clean up whatever venue they play in. The second song was a collaboration with the guitarist from "Incubus" and the song was different enough from the rest of their songs, that they decided to change up their stage outfits just for this one song. I'd recommend "From Now On" to check out next as it's quite different from the two you've heard so far (its an instrumental track with a more metal sound and is a ton of fun). Marion, I know which Band-Maid member would love your maid costume. Kanami Tono, their lead guitarist and chief composer of their music. The Maids refer to as "the princess" and I'm sure she will love it. The Maids change their costumes every year. Kanami's current outfit, is what I would call "the maiden of yore".

Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Don’t Let Me Down, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

At 30 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 33 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Well first of all Agami, you have a GREAT voice!! And you nailed your pitches like a real pro. Try some more Band-Maid please! They've got any type of song you want, from super hard to tear jerking ballad. Mostly they are hard rock, and these are two of their softer side. All of their songs though - are awesome! Great job!

And a thing about the maid outfits, Agami: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids.
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!

Why MAID?
Good question. It is because the girl who was formed this band was actually MAID. Miku Kobato used to work at @HOME maid cafe in Tokyo. It was her idea to have a rock band wearing the maid outfit.
