I've read a few reasons behind that but I'm so impressed with her for years now!
I heard it was because she was self-conscious about her Graves' Disease which can bulge your eyes and give you an enlarged thyroid or goiter.

OR, better, an old performance of her where she uses her voice like an instrument: Somersault - live at KCRW 2008 - please, you will be impressed!!
she does the same thing near the end of breathe me in the kcrw performances, vocally matching the instruments flawlessly which takes an incredible amount of technical skill and control to pull off… remember listening to that performance as a kid on UA-cam and my cousin who’s a vocal coach in nyc overheard it and asked who that was and said that there’s probably only a handful of people in the world who could vocally match instrumentals to such a flawless and pitch perfect degree that way.
