I've watched a couple of these videos where people get a hold of this old equipment and go to town. I haven't seen one of them measure the seat depth and assembled height of the valves. If you don't pay attention to these measurements the valves will still work but think of this effects the whole valve train. Also you need to pay attention to valve spring tension. If you have one lazy valve the whole system will not function correctly. It will run and probably run ok, but don't think you will do any racing with it.
Once you dress The stone. Dont just jam it down like that... Very litely spin the Stone by bumping the trigger repeatedly, with it sitting on the seat..... Put a cpl drops of oil on and it will cut very smoothly and polish The seats.. looks like chrome... No joke guys try this one for sure. ...... I got 40+ years and have done and seen most everything with the automobile in those years.. I Love to help others when I can.. have a blessed day

Man I wish I had that valve seat grinder. I'm stuck lapping valves by hand. The seats are coming out nice but the intake seats have low spots where they sit next to the exhaust seats. Nothing terrible though. Ran fine and I only caught that they were leaking when I was blowing the heads dry after pressure washing, saw water going past every intake seat LOL!
My Dad had a shop he hung out at in the 50s. Arnolds Garage in Tulsa. Arnold would often knurl the pistons and reuse them. They built a GMC 6 for my Dad's '41 Chevy. I just got a whole seat and valve setup from an old shop. This vid was helpful and I'm going to try my hand at some '50s Cadillac heads tomorrow!
Lol! I caught that. At 18:22, "give or take a "hundred thousanths" for oil clearance". Sounds like my engine building skills? I know what the dementions are so therefor I know they are not right! I just cross my fingers & hope it's good enuf!!! Lol!!
Check out Cometic gaskets. They can make any thickness you need. They make bimetalic or layered steel gaskets. Better sealing than regular felpro type gaskets.
in general, your process is OK however, I've learned the hard way that knurling the guides si an invitation to oil burning, now, I use bronze sleeve process, it does a much better job and the tooling used permits to use common hand tools to install them.. You don't regrind the 30 DEG upper seat angle, where the contact is located on the valve face ? and what is the effective width of the seat ?
Doing UA-cam vanlife. Living in nicely renovated van in L.A. County. Have my 1993 magnum 318 in the doghouse of a Dodge Ram B250 van. Can I park it for a week and pull the heads off from inside the van and do a valve job myself inside the van without anybody knowing?

Yes it is the same 440. Only difference may be the casting numbers for the heads, cam, weather 3 bolt or single... but essentially all the same style components
That's no Bump-n-Run work, ton of manual labor in an old school valve job.... then with that old Mopar, you have stem height to maintain with the rack mount valve train.
12:41 is a better view. It will show up if you were to mag it. Not to say it’s cracked all the way through. It is very common place for heads to crack. I do this work every day. It may last for awhile but eventually it will spread and start leaking. If it catches your fingernail I usually replace them.

Hurt my head I had to stop watching when you didn't polish the burs off the valve stems. Was hoping for a refresher for someone who knew what they were doing. Would be cool if you tube cencered videos of people not qualified to teach.
@ric0000 you really think it's a good idea to force a pending over valve stem through the guid? Why would you not take the time to remove the burrs with a file? After all, you are supposedly making the video to educate people. It only takes a yet you repeatedly forced it through the guide, scoring it. Sorry you lost your credibility with me. I k ow you know better but chose to make me out to be the bad guy. Good day!

I wonder if I can take an aftermarket gasket and just shave off the crush section with a laser to make the thickness

300 is a great bang for the buck mopar you can beat the high prices of the more popular cars with all of the performance and fun!
1968 300, is the first classic Mopar, I've owned, and I love it. The 440 under the hood makes it a fun ride regardless of the big size.

They make a spring that goes between the head and the stone so you can get the stone up to speed then press it down on the seat
I will have to look into that. It was a hand me down machine, so likely there is stuff missing
this spring is a necessity as ti permits to speed up the wheel before it is touching the seat so it will leave a nice polished finish.
